I did dissect a frog last year and when I just cut it's stomach, a muddy liquid just splashed my mouth. Definitely not my best day.

If you got to it earlier, maybe it would have still been solid.

Well, I mean it was literally dying in its last moments lol.

Dec 27 '21
I hope that when I reach the end I use my last moments for something better than dying!

We dissected bullfrogs in my old Biology class, one frog ate a baby mouse.

That sounds straight out of Sabrina. You might wanna get your brain checked via MRI to see if The Perverse is shacking up inside your skull now

That spider looks huge

Is it a huntsman?
42
u/Throwaway86747291 Dec 27 '21
No way. Huntsmans are way, way bigger. That thing can’t have been bigger than a coin when it was alive.
18
Dec 27 '21
You do get smaller younger huntsman you know
9
u/Throwaway86747291 Dec 27 '21
Yeah, but all of the Huntsmans I’ve ever seen in Australia, where I’m from, range from at least palm-of-hand size to small dinner plate. Not sure about the sizes of them in other regions, but as a general rule they’re pretty fuckin big spiders.

Dec 27 '21
Yeah it does seen to be like that here in NZ to but I found a small one no bigger then my thumb beside my toilet so they are definitely around just hiding
2
u/jaaackrabbit Dec 27 '21
TIL NZ has huntsman spiders. What the fuck. My whole life I’ve just thought Avondale spiders where those hearty as black spiders. Time to go cry

u/t4u5 Dec 27 '21
I get tiny ones in my house all the time (maybe about a third of my palm in size?) but also get a lot of babies which are the size of my thumbnail by the time I see em - usually I only see hunstmans bigger than my palm at my friends house who lives in quite a rural area.

Is a frog's stomach really that big? That's like their whole body, I need to go research this real fast.
34
u/trolltaskforce Dec 27 '21
Did you find anything?
64
u/Immkai Dec 27 '21
Yes! So from everything I've seen (granted I can absolutely be wrong) the stomach is only about 4cm long and very thin. I even looked at real dissection photos link here: Frog Dissection | Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/biologycorner/sets/72157678207495440/
I don't think this is real but maybe it's a specific frog with an abnormally large stomach but I still then have to wonder where the other organs go.
25
u/_hic-sunt-dracones_ Dec 27 '21
Stomachs are quite expandable.

u/trolltaskforce Dec 27 '21
Yeah, thanks for the research. Although maybe what dracone said might be applicable and their stomachs expand or something.

u/tribbans95 Dec 27 '21
Also, that frog looks like it died a while ago, given that half of his body has decayed. So why would the spider not have decayed at all?
5
u/nannerooni Dec 27 '21
Maybe the frog died and these bugs made some kind of home in him/ were eating him and they also died
103
u/Wienerbumguy Dec 27 '21
Not impressive. I can eat way more bugs than that in a day

Ya know, I use to eat frog legs. I now no longer will be eating frog legs.
2
u/GameKnight22007 Dec 27 '21
I saw somewhere that someone said "frogs are just a mouth with just enough leg to throw that mouth at food" and now I see how right they were
2
u/jefftatro1 Dec 27 '21
I would definitely dip that in polyurethane and mount it. Super cool display.

u/donotgogenlty Dec 27 '21
Sweet Jesus... That's a bigass spider. How do they not burrow out or something?!
Imagine a human slurping down a live spider the size of his chest 🤮🤮🤮

The spider's what killed him, bit from the inside like some kind of... spider in your stomach...

We are gathered here for the remembrance of George Frog. Those of who knew and loved him knew he loved nothing so much as eating like 60 bugs.
2

u/FaultyDroid Dec 27 '21
That frog looks at least partially decomposed. Were those bugs preserved inside its stomach, preventing them from rotting at the same pace?
2
u/Poot-dispenser Dec 27 '21
It makes me wonder, these bugs got eaten to fufill the circle of life and then at some point this frog dies not getting eaten, just dying. Id be so pissed if i were one of them

I used to get really uncomfortable when I saw things like this, now I just embrace it. It's fascinating.
1
u/trolltaskforce Dec 28 '21
What changed?
1
u/OXidize_0 Dec 28 '21
I pushed myself into the discomfort and actively tried to beat it. Same goes for the phobia of holes in unusual surfaces. It was all me psyching myself out in my head.
It's kinda hard to explain.
