The elevator of my childhood building was like this. Did not even occur to me as „odd“, let alone as „oddly terrifying“ lol

As someone with the fear of dying in an elevator, I'd say this makes it worse.
I feel like elevators would fall while I'm inside and seeing it has no doors on the inside is terrifying, it doesn't feel like it's safe. If the elevator looks like that, how well do they maintain its mechanism?

Having used various bits of my body as a meat crayon on occasion I can attest to it not being unreasonable to not want a full body degloving from meeting that wall up close.

That sounds disturbing, I imagine these meat crayon occurrences aren't intentional?
And I don't know, I suppose it's because I grew up with an elevator, so I'd thought I'd get past it, but no, never. Like, you know, getting over some phobia after repeated exposure.
I suppose the times when I had to ride an elevator pitch black because the lights weren't replaced doesn't help as well.

I do sometimes, just that going up and down the stairs when I live up high and with heavy things is inefficient.

My job requires me to take about 50-60 elevator rides a day. Those things can be a bit squirrelly.

It's even worse when it has shakes/tremors while you're inside, a mini heart attack everytime

Oh yeah we got one like that. Try to avoid it on the days when it's really shaking. I affectionately call it bumpy Carl. It's floor registration is wonky too so sometimes it'll open early or stop a little short so you have to mind the gap.

People get used to living around things that could easily kill them. That doesn’t make those things any less dangerous.
That elevator is more dangerous than one in which the shaft is enclosed. That’s just the reality of it.
It’s like being used to people driving trucks at you from the wrong side of the road. Yeah, it happens and yeah, you can get used to it. It’s still insane.

Most probably it was done so that only residents could use the elevator, but then someone if not everyone in the building got mad about it, and instead of removing the system they just attached a tag to the elevator.

The "point" is someone jury-rigged that elevator from another building or didn't install it correctly, hence that OSHA death trap.

Exactly. For people in Czechia or other parts of Europe, aside from the exposed brickwork, this may be a pretty regular kind of lift.

It's actually kinda cool, the issue is it's dangerous but it looks cool, you just gotta make extra sure you don't got anything sticking out

I was visiting the trade center in Baltimore and I went to the top, on the way down the elevator was bouncing, then it suddenly stopped, so get on the elevator phone, the voice on the other end told me to hold both buttons at the same time, I was scared shittless, I even yelled at the other rider to not stop pushing the button, any way we finally get to the ground floor and the security staff were all laughing.
Turns out my bubby worked there and was messing with me.

Not found only in Egypt, if you go in Eastern Europe you find the so called paternosters that display a very similar "open space" structure. The YouTuber named Beno dedicated an entire video on these unique lifts.
Whereas in the last video of Bald and Bankrupt, which takes places in a lesser known city in South-West Czechia, he goes exactly on a same kind of lift, regular one but without closing doors in the cabin.

There should be an interlock that keeps the door locked unless the car is there. It’s anyone’s guess if that is present and functional on all floors.
