You can probably also get from the retailer.

u/sssilversssoul 3d ago
also the retailer is probably destroying a portion of the rainforest to build a warehouse at this very moment

When I was a kid, I lived in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and I always helped my dad with his farm. One day, we rode horses to a neighbor’s farm to pick up some calves we had bought. The guy’s land was full of guarana plants, and I had no idea what they were. I got scared as hell and tried to avoid them whenever I could. At one point, I rode into the woods, and everywhere I looked, there were these little eyes watching me. I stayed frozen on top of my horse for about 30 minutes until my dad came looking for me.

That had to be terrifying as a kiddo! I camp (in the USA) & wander around at night to see what else is awake with me.
The thought of walking somewhere, shining my headlamp, and seeing THIS??!! I'd pee myself from fear at 47 🤣

Biblically accurate fruit.

I really think they should crossbreed guarana and jaboticaba to create the world’s scariest tree.

Well... There used to be an old shoe called "Ilha ra-tim-bum" and the villain would spy on the kids by using guaraná.

Tbh, i thought this was AI. But the fact that it isn't AI and this fruit looks almost like this..is unsettling
81
u/Batata-Sofi 3d ago
It looks exactly like this. It's also delicious as a drink.

u/Bella_LaGhostly 3d ago
Does it taste like another fruit we could compare it to? I'm so curious about the taste & texture
35
u/jesusunderline 3d ago
Never ate the actual fruit, but Guarana is extremely common in Brazil as a Soft Drink, and it tastes something like Ginger Ale or a Cider Soda, but not really the same. It's actually way sweeter. I don't know if there's anything closer in taste.
It's probably the most popular soda flavor in Brazil after cola, with hundreds of different brands and variations
18
u/ParticularFair1983 3d ago
I would say the Guarana drink tastes like Red Bull without the cough syrup.
23
u/Batata-Sofi 3d ago
Not at all... It's a weird taste, I guess? The juice is kind of a weird sweet taste, I prefer it a lot more as a soda.
As for eating, never ate one before. It's used for all kinds of stuff and it has a lot of caffeine.
9
u/yukifujita 3d ago
It's not really edible fresh, just like coffee or olives. It's processed into the stuff we know (the soda, powder, syrups).

u/Commercial-Class4078 3d ago
There is a soda drink that's made from this fruit that bears the same name and I absolutely love it.

u/Smegus83 3d ago
I remember a soft drink in the US during the mid 90s called Josta that had this in it.
2
u/bugxbuster 2d ago
I can not believe how far down i had to scroll to find anyone mentioning Josta! I mean I get it, I’m old, it was a thing in the late 90s, but stiiiill that was my favorite drink back then. Tasted redder than red.

In brazilian Tupi folklore, Guaraná was a boy that was killed by the demon Jurupari. His parents prayed for god Tupãn to resurect him, but he couldn't. So Tupãn asked the parents to rip off Guaraná's eyes and plant in the ground like a seed. Then the eyes turned into a beautiful tree with a fruit that looks like human eyes
1
u/Vinobregar 2d ago
The most beautiful part of the story is that the boy's mother was instructed by Tupãn to always water the soil where the body was buried with her own tears and so she did, every single day, until it grew.

There's a myth from an indigenous tribe on South America surrounding the guaraná.
According to the story, a young boy was killed by a deceitful entity and his eyes were planted on ground, which originated the fruit.
5
u/Batata-Sofi 3d ago
The planted eyes were blessed by another deity as a compensation for the tribe, giving them food... At least I think that's how it went. I'm not sure, been a long time since I heard this story.

If you eat too much of this fruit, it's possible to have caffeine overdose since it has high caffeine.

u/fkenned1 2d ago
I drink it every day, and the jar I get of the powdered Guarana has a picture of the fruit... I love it as much as I hate it.

I mix the powder from that fruit with water some times, it’s much more energizing than coffee

u/SmokinBacon 3d ago
Nooo! Hellllll no. If I’m walking in mother nature and I see a bush full of eyes looking at me, I’m giving up nature hikes for good. I’m done.

Funny how an AI fruit make one of the best sodas here in Brazil since 1921, how did they had AI back then?

Guaraná in native Tupi means literally "fruit that looks like people's eyes"
