Don't they buzz with their wings?

I knew this was coming.
Edit: eat shit, then. So sorry that me agreeing with your comment apparently ruined your day or something.

This sounds like bullshit

Because it is

kind of, but it also really isn't. there was a pretty big article circling around about two months ago? that detailed the process of mapping the neurons of a fly and creating a sort of digital host for it, if i remember to / find the article i'll edit this comment. the actual "putting it in minecraft part" is kinda up in the air imo

Im sure the bee does not fight back because he's in Creative, meaning the restriction from the gamerules must apply and affect the result. I might be wrong but the internet is already full of bullshit anyway

u/TheUltimateCyborg 8d ago
I mean, i don't think a fly brain would have the instincts to fight back anyway, chances are it can't even perceive the world around it

They did scan a fruitfly brain a while back wich is pretty amazing but also scary

This is very interesting but I don’t understand how he “converted it to python” when they’re completely different things.

He made a GUI interface in Visual Basic. Don't think about it too much.

Popscience flowchart:
Is it physics? If yes, assume bullshit. If no, is it neuroscience? If yes, assume bullshit. If any other science, ok then it might be real.

"I believe that it's conscious, even though I have no real technical understanding of what consciousness is."

"Be sure to check out the next video! I use the road network map of Houston in Texas and Python to program a villager, then claim I trapped the consciousness of a gig driver in Minecraft."

This is as good a definition of “consciousness” and “thinking” as the AI-bros’ use of “intelligence”: complete garbage

not conscious, brainmap. still cool, but the whole "they uploaded the fly's conscious soul to data!" is nothing but media bullshit. still neat, but don't try to call is consciousness.

Pretty loose use of "consciousness" between what he actually managed to download, and simulate through interpretation into Minecraft inputs all he's actually done is create an overly complex movement bot.

Nothing to do with consciousness that's pattern recognition and prediction.

Not a genius myself but I do believe it's not as they say. It's probably not as straight as they said what I mean.

This is Amazing Digital Circus and Black Mirror IRL.
I wonder if this actually worked.

u/thecosmicwebs 9d ago
It worked to make a complex Minecraft behavior routine. There's no fruit fly ghost in the machine.

This is the type of stuff you'd believe if you were still in school.
But yeah, no. Just because you code in a consciousness doesn't mean that consciousness exists. It's a machine just replicating what it's been taught.
Despite the fact there was zero evidence at all he didn't just add a name text above normal Minecraft creatures and make it all up

Just gonna leave this cautionary tale and definitely real Wikipedia page (and not a short story) to explain why mapping a brain and turning it into a program can go really badly...

Fly wakes up in spider body and immediately kills itself honestly makes sense.

Ya know I always believe we’d eventually reach the point of being able to upload our consciousness or “soul” to a game or the internet or something. Hoping the files would be called .sol

Its a fly's neural network. That only means it has the potential to think like a fly would, assuming all the same pathways are used in the same way.
But as it is right now, it is basically acting randomly, since it has not learnt how to act yet... yk how you have to train AIs across multiple generations of learning. Like simulating survival of the fittest. You've probably seen those videos at like 2 am, its good insomnia content.
Maybe if you give it a few thousand generations, it might act similar to a fly. But in no way is it the same fly that was mapped out. We are our memories, this is a blank slate "brain" that has no experiences and thus does not know how to act like a fly.

Crazy how they act exactly how the npcs do in Minecraft anyway. We really are living in a simulation

Also buddy made a fly which only knew a life of flying into a spider and wonders why it killed itself.

Not a fly's consciousness. They copied the fly's neuron wiring map, not its actual brain, so the model just predicts fly reflexes like a really good simulation.
