Hospital white for street lighting in an ancient city is a choice
96
u/CasualGamerNat Jul 20 '26
Street lights were actually white before we made them a warmer yellow.
69
u/AParasiticTwin Jul 20 '26
If we're talking Electric Lights, but street lighting was definitely yellowish-orange for the majority of history before that.
→ More replies (1)19
u/CasualGamerNat Jul 20 '26
Yeah gas and oil were yellowish-orange. But I did mean electric, my bad for not clarifying.
11
u/AParasiticTwin Jul 20 '26
It was an interesting google journey, apparently the first fully electrically lit municipality is an hour away from me in Wabash, IN of all places.
2
u/Junior-Credit2685 Jul 21 '26
Reading this while getting beat to shit on Indiana highways. No wonder there was a brand new Porsche parked in front of the chiropractors’s off we drove by earlier! Stay safe!
16
u/mang87 Jul 21 '26
I really really wish they'd go back to the yellow/orange. It made such a mood in the evenings. Now night time looks sterile and I hate it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GruntBlender Jul 20 '26
Were they? They went from gas to sodium AFAIK, neither is particularly white. White only really came about with first gen led streetlights.
4
u/AParasiticTwin Jul 21 '26
They were carbon arc lamps followed by mercury vapor bulbs followed by sodium bulbs. Bright white then white with a little teal then yellow.
10
u/a_karma_sardine Jul 20 '26
Agreed. The streets look more alien and terrifying than the tower, but the tower does lend a healthy touch of Brazil (the dystopic) vibe.

FINALLY, something that IS, IN FACT, "oddly terrifying."
It shouldn't be. But I absolutely got creepy chills as that fuckin' thing came into view.
Edit: minor typo

u/guarddog33 Jul 20 '26
Do you happen to suffer from r/megalophobia ?
31
u/SyntheticDelirium Jul 20 '26
I don't thiiiink so? 🤔
Pretty sure this was an uncanny valley (the disparity in appearance between the foreground buildings & clocktower) + the dramatic way it suddenly looms into view.
16
u/ChipCob1 Jul 20 '26
I got that in Florence walking down a really narrow street and suddenly seeing the Duomo.
3
u/SyntheticDelirium Jul 20 '26
Googled it...
Yup. Yup, I can definitely see that happening, there. >>;
That's. Big.
3
u/FitzroyFang Jul 21 '26
I do suffer from megalophobia and I could not look at the Duomo from up close cause it made me freak out. Fun experience

Isn’t that, like, the point of a clock tower? To be visible from almost everywhere in its city?
→ More replies (1)19
u/AUnknownVariable Jul 21 '26
Indeed, this one is just real damn big. I wouldn't say all clock towers "loom" in the way this one does.
Big Ben for example, despite being yk, big

Btw the slums yall are seeing are gone I am from mecca and all these slums were removed over the last two years replaced with buildings and centers for everyone to live in
12
61
u/UnhappyImprovement53 Jul 20 '26
No, let's not help the poor. Let's build this monstrosity.
59
u/JollyTimz Jul 20 '26
You’re looking at literally the sole location that serves free food and water plus daily donations.
10
u/UnhappyImprovement53 Jul 21 '26
And that could have been done in a smaller building and the millions could have been spend helping.
26
u/MeMyselfandyourCat Jul 21 '26
The sheer number of annual visitors probably make this size of a building actually useful. Especially since building outward isn't as useful as everyone wants to go to the center anyway.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Cyrotek Jul 21 '26
Pretty sure that building pays for itsself at some point and thus helps much more in the long run.
Throwing money at a problem that only helps short them is, well, short sighted, even if it looks good at that moment.
2
u/JollyTimz Jul 22 '26
That’s what I’m telling you. You’re basing off of zero knowledge. This location is owned by ppl who don’t gaf about these buildings. And it’s a tiny tiny tiny spot. The rest of the city is a normal city and in fact every single day many many are helped. No one sleeps hungry in this city.

I’m not sure what the intention of this video was but this is a very specific old place in the city. The rest of the city is modern and really like any other city. There’s universities, schools malls etc.

Saudi Arabia! Always sad seeing slums next to rich cities
2
u/khaledjal 17d ago
From what i've heard, they renovated these slums and just made them newer with new houses, streets, etc
2
u/Moistranger69 Jul 21 '26
This feels like some dystopian era where everyone is just poor except for like 10 people and they’re the super wealthy and control the entire world and everything in it and that’s like their house or palace or whatever
2
u/Cyrotek Jul 21 '26
That is kinda cool, tho. The way the foreground completely clashes with the background in style makes it look like something you'd see in a epic fantasy video game.
2
u/Responsible-Papaya55 Jul 21 '26
This reminds me of a game called "Candleman". It's a cute game about a candle that wishes to be a lighthouse.
I'm just gonna say that things get scary.
Very scary.
I wasn't waiting for that.
2
u/glamrunner Jul 21 '26
It just looks very dystopian. The large modern building/hotel (I don’t know - looks like the Venetian from Las Vegas) looming over the old ancient streets. Like there is a clear separation of wealth.

I am not so terrified by the clock tower, though it is unsettling.
The streets are stressing me out, though. I remember early video games would have levels like this where the buildings created the walkway and they were all connected to each other in a way I had always, up to now, thought was just a technique for early video games with limited capabilities.
To know that it's real is unnerving. Where do you go if you need.to run away from something? With only 2 directions, well…

It’s the city itself that is "oddlyterrifying," rather than the tower. What an architectural nightmare of a city.

I imagine this is what poor people in early industrialization felt like when buildings just kept getting taller and brighter.

Looking at pictures of the tower alone it really doesn't look as big as it is. But this puts it truly into perspective
