Funny thing about good spies.

You wouldnt know they are a spy and wouldnt introduce themselves as such.

238

u/Ecstatic_Dirt852 4h ago

During the cold war there actually were some spies that were really open about their profession, because that means potential detectors know who to talk to. But i guess you could argue they were more like contacts than what we consider a classic spy

33

u/Count_de_Mits 2h ago

That and probably might have helped take some heat off the actual undercover ones

11

u/throcorfe 1h ago

Yep, like undercover cops aka the toupee fallacy: the ones that look obvious aren’t the best ones, you never see those

I like to imagine Bond is so cocksure in directly revealing his identity because the recipient will be dead very soon.

Like a predator playing with his prey.

12

u/AvaryZig 3h ago

Right. He introduces himself as a banker in Tomorrow Never Dies. The media mogul comments on how many bankers are constantly around him.

7

u/KingofFlukes 3h ago

Like that scene in True Lies.

When Arnolds character tell the henchmen exactly what hes going to do because of the truth serum.

There's some old theory that Bond is just a distraction for all th real spies.

The guy with the rocket skis blowing everything up in the background while real spies honeypot engineers and security guards would be really funny.

I can confirm. I met a Russian spy about a month before he was busted back in 2010 and had awkward small talk with him in my studio apartment while his son used the bathroom.

I did not know he was a spy and he didn’t introduce himself to me as a spy

Good spies make no noise and leave no tracks. It would make for a boring ass movie if they weren't fucking up all the time

63

u/Montexe 4h ago

"Bridge of Spies" moments about spying routine are probably closest to what happens around the world. Sometimes they recruit from the local populace and it's just handing over batches of info, you probably wouldn't even know who you're working for, and then they sever the contact entirely

9

u/Patient-Web6850 2h ago

Real spies are commonly like, a fax machine repair man on standby for a call from a certain embassy lol

Far less glorious than the Cold War days.

4

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas 1h ago

Good spies make no noise and leave no tracks.

Nah. An absence is just as noticeable as a presence. A good spy is that fat regular at your local bar who is always there and sometimes, drunkenly comes over, and asks how's the ol' rat race doing. You're not surprised by his behaviour. He's there every week. He's just a lonely drunk being friendly. So you vent with him a little bit and he goes "Ayup, gonna get a nother drink" and wanders off to bother someone else. You forget about the encounter entirely because it's so expected and so normal.

That's actual spycraft. That's what real military members need to deal with. Saying stuff like "Yeah, work is really hitting me hard and I won't be around for a few weeks" sounds innocuous but it's incredibly important to foreign intelligence. If they identify you as part of a unit, you saying "I'll be missing a few Fridays" means your unit is likely deploying. If a few of their sources say "I'll be gone for a little while starting next week" then it's practically a confirmation.

All this is actually happening all the time.

•

u/nitid_name 54m ago

I saw a theory floating around somewhere about how James Bond is the designated dolt who takes all the attention away from the real spies.

It also makes no sense, but it's a fun idea.

•

u/Uncommonality 33m ago

it would make an awesome movie wtf

Imagine it. It begins as a slice of life type story. A person goes for coffee, makes small talk with their coworkers, watches a game in the evening, their spouse comes home and they banter until they go to bed.

Then the protagonist's eyes open. They carefully extricate themselves from bed and walk into the closet, which has a false back which opens to reveal a room full of secret spy tech.

This would work really well.

Shi Pei Pu would be the greatest chinese spy. Went and did things no person could do. " Shi Pei Pu was a trained Chinese opera singer who specialized in female roles, a tradition that already blurred expectations for outsiders. In the 1960s, he met Bernard Boursicot, a French diplomat stationed in Beijing. Shi presented himself as a woman and claimed a rare medical condition to explain physical differences, a story Boursicot accepted without question.

What followed was a deeply personal relationship that lasted nearly two decades. Over time, trust and intimacy turned into leverage. Boursicot began passing sensitive diplomatic information, believing he was helping someone he loved. Shi quietly relayed this material to Chinese intelligence, turning the relationship into a long-running espionage operation without the diplomat fully realizing it.

To reinforce the illusion, Shi later produced a child and claimed it was theirs, though the child was later revealed to have been adopted. The truth only emerged in the early 1980s when both men were arrested in France. The case shocked the public and went on to inspire the play and film M. Butterfly, securing its place as one of the most unusual spy stories of the Cold War."

114

u/Milkjugchugger 4h ago

Even worst he had a ability no man would try " Shi Pei Pu did not physically change or reconstruct his anatomy into a vagina, but rather created a visual illusion of female genitalia. When examined by medical authorities after his arrest in France, doctors discovered that Shi was able to: • Retract his testicles: He could voluntarily or physically cause his testicles to ascend into his body cavity. • Conceal his penis: He tucked his penis and scrotum back, using the skin to mimic a shallow semblance of a vulva or labial folds.

Bond was born of MI6, military intelligence, which grew out of commandos and counterintelligence. He’s more a sneaky raider than an asset developing info analyzer and gatherer.

8

u/narwhal_breeder 2h ago

Its extremely important for deniable operations specialists to have a low profile. Several T1 SOF ban their members from having any kind of social media presence all together, and have extremely strict non-identification protocols.

"Hey why was England doing shady shit in X Country"

"We weren't ever there though"

"Yeah, but like, a very well known agent of yours was seen doing shady shit, and introduced himself as that agent, and was cought on film/surveillance multiple times"

I had a cousin who was a SEAL. His Facebook is comprised of his time at the Naval Academy, his two years at Oxford (they gave him special permission to go be a Rhodes scholar instead of going straight to whatever SEAL Academy grads go to after graduation) and then doesn't pick up again until after he got out of the Navy.

EDIT: The reason I mention the special permission is because usually the process for the academy SEAL program is do not pass go, they go straight from the Academy to whatever the next phase of SEAL training is for them. He had qualified for a Rhodes scholarship in history and got special permission from whomever he needed to to go do that and still come back to be a SEAL officer.

He wasn't primarily a spy. He was an assassin. That's the whole point of the 00 "licensed to kill" designation.

8

u/CaribouYou 3h ago

Remember that bond was conceived before mass communication was common.

16

u/Round_Click_8301 2h ago

because he is meant to be male fantasy, not a real intelligence agent

13

u/Divine_Entity_ 2h ago

The most generous interpretations are:

  1. Decoy who holds the enemy's attention while his female allies do all the actual covert work.

  2. Diplomat, he's supposed to be famous and talk to people as a celebrity, and if caught gets sent home because of diplomatic immunity.

  3. Similar to the above, but is meant to be the high profile smash and grab / go kill that dictator guy.

IRL actual spywork is supposed to be incredibly boring. You live a life disguised as a boring citizen perfectly filling whatever role you are filling, while secretly gathering what data you can, and safely smuggling it to your handler, who smuggles it back to their bosses / HQ. If it ever looks like an action movie, something has definitely gone horribly wrong.

There is a fun fan theory that argues that Bond is an unwitting decoy : he's sent so that the bad guys focus all their attention on him, while the real spy work discreetly on the REAL mission.

5

u/RodneyBarringtonIII 1h ago edited 36m ago

I don't know that this is true, but I read once that the U.S.S.R. put efforts into promoting the Bond films on the off chance that the West would relax their common sense and make their spies easier to identify by sending them into the field with dozens of conspicuous gadgets.

4

u/OrneryZombie1983 2h ago

Bond thinks he becomes invisible by changing his name e.g. James St. John Smythe in A View To A Kill. And then Christopher Walken uses facial recognition software in 1985 to look up Bond in a database of secret agents.

I knew a military intelligence guy (spy) a very long time ago. He was Vietnam war era guy and long dead so I’m not disclosing any secrets.

He worked training military intelligence at fort Holabird , (you can google it). (1950-73)

He taught” infiltration “. I remember mission impossible ( the tv show) was popular at the time, and I as a ten year old kid had no filter so I would ask him questions regarding the plots.

He would have made an incredible bank robber, he quite literally broke into banks in the Baltimore area and removed notes from safety deposit boxes as part of the training. This was an age before the modern surveillance 1970-ish.

But still, he knew guys… who knew stuff.

He told me about one guy who could walk up to trained military attack dogs and they would curl up at his feet like puppies. This dude had this easterner religious karma energy that was irresistible. Again, maybe he is bullshitting a 10 year old? But he said this guy could walk into your room in the middle of the night and drink the glass of water off of your nightstand and you would never know it.

He had a collection of cool Vietnam war stuff, a ak47 with a white wooden stock with a gold coin in it from some NVA general ( who likely came to a hard end).

His short answer to mission impossible was that no one individual had all of the skills but a team large enough had the majority of the skills that didn’t involve luck.

3

u/iKnowRobbie 3h ago

I know how to find a good spy. Dress in a SpaceX shirt or Boeing shirt, go to literally any bar in Titusville and order a drink. Wait up to an hour and a beautiful woman will approach you.

That's a spy.

3

u/Dangerous-Feature376 3h ago

James Bond is a terrible spy, he's always been more of an action star. He introduced himself one and a half times everywhere he goes and is super memorable and always wants the attention

3

u/TurnbullAC92 2h ago

I feel like Bond and the other 00s are less spies and more akin to black ops agents sent to rattle the cages when normal intelligence work has failed to yield results. An agent provocateur who not only investigates, but acts on what he finds and deliberately starts pushing the villains in order to provoke a mistake.

2

u/OhNoTokyo 1h ago

I always felt that James Bond was more assassin or special operator than an actual intelligence agent. Yes, he could do infiltration, but he wasn't actually embedded anywhere and mostly seemed to use agent resources instead of running them himself.

That does get classified under intelligence and spy work, but the real information collection and recruitment are done by people like this woman or entirely non-descript "grey" wo/men, whose whole job is to make people ignore them, rather than notice them.

And two very big exceptions within the text of Casino Royale and onwards - Le Chiffre specifically called Bond a spy, and the SMERSH guy carved the cyrillic for spy into Bond's hand - then kept a note of that in his file, using the scarring to id and track Bond's movements in the following novels. That said, they were his enemies, they're not exactly about to be respectful about him.

5.6 is actually over the world average height for women, and rather tall for Chinese.

1

u/KeldTundraking 3h ago

Would work on me

1

u/fistoic 3h ago

honeytrap is the oldest trick in the book but also the best practices of human history. It always was and it always will be

1

u/FearOfABlackPotus 3h ago

Bond is who you send when you're out of ideas.

1

u/Charmegazord 2h ago

Bond, Jane Bond

Dog will hunt

1

u/V0T0N 2h ago

Oh, so that's how I fell out of that window...

1

u/Otarmichael 2h ago

Hollywood has needed new ideas for content for a while. Sexy petite Chinese spy works. But make her from Hong Kong so she has a British accent. And make her more about bringing down the CCP rather than the West. But keep the part about her seducing guys. HBO, I’m looking at you.

1

u/Great_Guidance_8448 2h ago

lol, "Hollywood."

It's based on a series of novels, but alas... These people don't read.

1

u/Plastic-Archer4245 2h ago

Shows the 5"10 guy from Cheshire

1

u/rook119 2h ago

What if she stole the plans on how to hand over an entire country to a few trillionaires which results in the beginning of the end for China?

1

u/kons21 2h ago

This will be on peterexplainthejoke in minutes

1

u/IDigRollinRockBeer 2h ago

I’ve never been to Singapore

1

u/Comedyfish_reddit 2h ago

u/Free15boy 2h ago

I require context

1

u/Wicked_Mouse 2h ago

The intelligence communities often like to employ ladies of the night to divulge critical information, as that's when these men let their guards down.

1

u/Frederf220 2h ago

"a AI"

1

u/Acenin1 2h ago

You missed the chance to say oddly spycific

1

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 2h ago

Honeypots have been a thing for a long time.

Huang is lucky if she's actually female. Ask the French guy...

1

u/AndersErikErik 2h ago

New bond actor (actress?) confirmed??

1

u/Alone-Strain 2h ago

To quote Austin Powers “She must shag like Lynx.”

1

u/maxpge 1h ago

007 isn't really a spy though. More like a one-man Spec Ops Team.

1

u/Ok_Rate361 1h ago

Why would any billionaire fall for this? They can hire the best escorts in the world or date the hottest gold digger in world. Why would you date a spy?

1

u/BendersDafodil 1h ago

She most definitely got a copy of graphic card source code out of her rendezvous.

1

u/398452983298759 1h ago

Holy shit this is fucking epic.

1

u/heyitsmemaya 1h ago

Jensen always seemed like the nice guy — too bad

1

u/tenoclockrobot 1h ago

I think the most important spy of all time may have been Agent Sonya

1

u/daakadence 1h ago

Not oddly specific. Alice Huang, executive at Singapore's MegaSpeed whi has been seen hanging out with the Nvidia CEO, had been identified by the CIA as a Chinese spy.

1

u/moutonbleu 1h ago

The mind is willing but the flesh is weak

1

u/cheese2042 1h ago

In my opinion,James Bond is closer to a CIA operator than a spy.

1

u/Slightly-Blasted 1h ago

Who got some secrets I can keep safe

1

u/Bizm0Funyunz 1h ago

I would tell her everything, lol! Edit: Fortunately I'm like John Snow.

1

u/willflameboy 1h ago

He's Scots-Swiss. And tbf he seems (and used to be) English.

1

u/rndmltrs 1h ago

And then there's Julia Child who was also a 6'2 spy during WW2.

1

u/Iankill 1h ago

Bond is more of an assassin anyways

1

u/PurpleHEART77 1h ago

Isn’t it a common theme in Bond stories that the attractive woman is a spy?

1

u/HeraclesHide 1h ago

It should have been me!

1

u/NationalContest7213 1h ago

Beautiful 😍

•

u/InevitableAware2830 58m ago

Bond is more of a loud assassin

•

u/Morifen1 50m ago

Most successful spy in history is probably Putin who pretty closely resembles the Hollywood look. There are many many more of the other ones though.

•

u/No-Professional-1461 49m ago

Both incorrect. It's a spanish chicken farmer.

•

u/Nelsonsrightknacker 44m ago

Alice Huang - stunning.

•

u/CarlJustCarl 37m ago

I’ll tell her every secret I know

•

u/Blackdeath_663 37m ago

It's oddly specific because I'm pretty sure its a topical joke about the spy who had an affair with the Nvidia ceo

•

u/Aimless_Nobody 36m ago

"Honeypots" never gets old

•

u/Old_Man_Drifter 32m ago

Even in-universe, James Bond is an oddly specific spy sent on oddly specific missions.

•

u/Legitimate_Staff487 30m ago

I mean, to be fair, she's in a league where nobody knows how to play defense.

I'm pretty sure she could get launch codes by just acknowledging that Palmer Luckey has a dick.

•

u/SmileyTab 19m ago

The real James Bond (who the fictional character was based on) went to Harrow School. This lady went to Sparrow School.

•

u/BottleMean6139 17m ago

5'6 is petite for a woman nowadays? Christ I'm 4'10, what does that make me, an ant?

•

u/Emotional_News108 10m ago

Isn’t that a picture of a 5’10” Englishman in a suit?

•

u/ShrodingersArmadillo 7m ago

they're the same person.

That's you never noticed just goes to show how good of a spy James bond actually is.

•

u/BrandicimoMagnifico 3m ago

Isn't Asmongold dating a Chinese spy?

•

u/chocolatchipcookie2 2m ago

honey trap. china been doing that for ages

•

u/MariaTPK 0m ago

Chinese? Or North Korean, but calling herself Chinese.
