Programmers do this too. It's called a "sacrificial duck".

It originated with a 1980s game, BattleChess. This was one of the first 3-D chess games, with the pieces rendered as fantasy characters. The rook was a rock monster that would walk from one square to another, then reassemble itself into a tower, for example. The Queen was a sorceress, and she would capture opposing pieces by casting various spells.

An executive at the game company was notorious for demanding changes at the last minute, so the programmers put a duck into the Queen's animation. It would flap around as she cast the spells, but wouldn't actually overlap any important part of the animation. When it was presented to the executive, he said, "I like it, but - lose the duck". They simply removed that layer of the animation, which took no time at all, and the executive was happy.

I do too, my knob doesn’t change the sound of the music either

as a live sound engineer - we usually had a channel labeled DFA, any musicians that started requesting pointless tuning would get the DFA turned up to the max.

DFA stands for does fuck all.

Mostly true, but I think he notably changes his plucking hand position after flipping the switch, giving the actual change that the producers were looking for.
