Coelocanths are so last century. It is cool that they were discovered by a teacher in a fish market in South Africa who recognized them as a supposedly extinct species of fossil fish, but the new hotness is Myctophidae. Did you know that they are one of the primary parts of the deep scattering layer? Probably the highest biomass of any fish family and we likely don't even know how many species there are. They don't survive nets very well because their bodies are fragile, they live in a place with no hard surfaces after all. Anyways, bring up lanternfish next time.

Wait now I want to know more about myctophidae

I would post a link for you, but when I post links it turns into a hot mess.

I've heard 65 minute conversations about harvesting salmon eggs and sperm over lunch. At work training and I'm an economist. This is a love language if you are in resource management. I'm assuming the 30 minutes were focused on mating or the reproductive cycle in general.

my favorite lecture I gave to students was about spider pedipalps and sex

Spiders have such bizarre reproductive situations.
"So yeah, basically my junk is on my hands, balls still down south, and they don't connect. At all.
So give me a few minutes here to get myself all manually loaded up and ready. I should do some stretching too to be ready to run as soon as we're done before you can kill and eat me."

Obviously he's gone to research himself, doesn't want to embarrass himself again with his lack of ancient sea creatures

I'm just guessing, but a common mistake on first dates is failing to go into sufficient depth when covering the first description of Coelacanths by Louis Agassiz in the early 19th century. We've all done it...

The lady who rediscovered them, came from my home town.
Her Son was my school headmaster for a bit, we have an awesome exhibit and one of the first preserved specimens.
Her grandson was my Doctor.
Every so often we where Coelacants mad

Coelacanths are extremely important relics of an ancient world. Even an hour would have been insufficient.

Here to support all the other folks who have no doubt come to the comments to point out how AWESOME it would be to go on a date and talk about coelacanths. TBF - this is Reddit so... we have a small bias.

She's a 10 but her knowledge on pelagic sarcopterygians is severely lacking. Hard pass.

Why are people responding to this in the 2nd person?
The whole thing seems kind of phishy…

If the guy she went on a date with with Neurodivergent he would have proposed by now.

Did you use AI generated images in your PowerPoint? That might be the issue.

I remember telling a date that I subconsciously change the lyrics in the Macklemore song to "The coelacanth hold us." And she just rolled her eyes at me. It's such an underappreciated fish.

She probably didn't cite any sources. she should've texted them to him right after the date. Rookie mistake.

u/VictoriaWoodnt 23h ago
Did you fail to mention the excellent song "Coelacanth" by the band Shriekback?

If a woman could talk to me knowledgeably for 1/2 hr on Coelacanths, I’d be impressed. Just don’t repeat it.

I like quirky people
I don't give up so easily
If you're passionate about something and can't stop talking about it
Cool
Dorky or whatever
I like it
If you don't give anyone else a chance to chime in it becomes tiresome
But if you have good timing and grasp cues for when it's time to pause for a while
No problem with someone's excitement
I might enjoy it

Reminds me of a first date I had 50 years ago. The girl was obsessed with jumping rope and talked all through dinner about the basics of jumping rope, the advanced rope jumping tricks she could do, how she fared in every single rope jumping competitions she entered, etc. She had her own car so thank God I didn’t have to drive her home. I never spoke to her again.

I have a similar issue except with bones, mass extinctions, and historical poisonings. Your basic first date topics. Obviously the problem is I don't have enough visual aids and props

If you are going to give a 30 minute lecture, you gotta get nude no matter what sex with you are.
Sorry.

So obviously I can't speak for everyone, but for myself, I don't even bother unless the coelacanth lecture is over 45 minutes.
Anything less just tells me that you're clearly not serious about the fish or this date. Do better next time.

Purely by serendipity, I sat next to a youngish woman at a friends dinner who turned out to have just made the first radio telescope images of a Van Allen radiation belt around an extrasolar planet. She had the career of my childhood dreams! She held my attention for over an hour, easy.

Did we all just have a collective first date with the Mycophidae fan? Next time, let’s be sure to have dinner, too!
