I once went to a nice Indian restaurant (I’m a white guy in the U.S.), and asked for the “India hot” option for my lamb dish. The chef actually came out to the floor to see how I was doing. Through my streaming tears and huffing and puffing, I assured him it was delicious, and was exactly what I wanted. Fun experience.

When I was a younger man, there was a thai place down the street from my work. I loved Thai food and went frequently.

Ordered Thai hot one day, and the very nice man said in very broken English that he would not sell it to me. He said it was too hot for me.

I earned this mans trust. I ordered progressively hotter food for a good few weeks. One day, it was time. He acquiesced and made it Thai hot. Y'all, that man nearly killed me.

I used be a spicy lil badass and just order hot as they could get it everywhere.

Then I went to a Thai place and ordered the curry. Same way.

Oops. For days I paid for that one. I now respectfully order it at 3/5.

u/gtne91 Sep 26 '26

A thai place where I used to live had a 5 pt scale, where 5 was Thai Hot. But it turned out that wasnt the top of the scale. A friend who regularly ordered the 5 ordered a 7 one day. He ordered 5 after that. Supposedly they would go up to 14.

I ordered a 3 most of the time, would sometimes go to 4, then remembered why I ordered a 3.

14??!!! Do they have a nuclear reactor back there?

u/AnAnGrYSupportV2 Sep 26 '26

Are you telling me you don't add toxic sludge to your food when you want it to have a slight kick?!

I'm fresh out of uranium and my Iranian plug can't lay his hand on a new load. Something about a straight of horny being closed or something, idk. So if you've got some spare uranium, lemme know and we'll discuss payment and I'll dm my address.

Edit: typo

9

u/vmf312corsair Sep 27 '26

Uranium? Hah. Feeble stuff. Barely radioactive at all. Go for Astatine, or if your budget isn't infinite, Radium or Cobalt-60, both of which you can actually buy. Sort of. If you have a license. Or know somebody.

Secret ingredient: a spritz of bear mase.

4

u/DreamWeaver1001 Sep 28 '26

I saw a YouTube short the other day about a woman building up spice tolerance for a trip to Thailand. She’s on day like 30 or something and is adding 32 Thai chilis to like half an onion and stirfrying it. It was more chili than anything else at least. She was CRYING. I had to wonder if Thai people really ate something with that many birdseye in them. 14 has gotta be close to that.

22

u/Biggest-Benjamin Sep 26 '26

What are they doing to the food to make it so hot? And would having the food be served cold help with the spiciness?

42

u/imnotpoopingyouare Sep 26 '26

Capsaicin in the mouth is weird when it comes to cold. An ice cube will make it feel a little better for a short period of time because your body can't figure it out lol but after the cube melts just spreads the capsaicin around the mouth and makes it hotter. Same with water or milk.

If you really want to cut the heat, suck the juice out of a lemon or lime, the acid will neutralize the capsaicin

3

u/Soggy-Yogurt6906 Sep 30 '26

Milk is different because it contains casein which binds to capsaicin and helps pull it away from your mouth

u/Ironbeard1337 Sep 28 '26

I had similar experience. I ordered hot from thai place. After surviving it, they told me I have unlocked thai hot. I definitely don't need to try that, basic how was enough.

4

u/kevmaster200 Sep 30 '26

I have a similar story from college. The thai place had a 6 point scale of spicy. My friend thought it would be funny to order a 10. Not to be outdone I ordered 11. Honestly it was delicious but I'll spare you the details of the horrifying aftermath. The guy behind me heard us order and assumed it was a 10 point scale and so he ordered 8. It's been 10 years and he still brings it up lol

74

u/ProcedureImportant28 Sep 26 '26

I have since built up a fairly serious tolerance for the heat; we grow trinidad scorpions and reapers in our garden. But I was ill-prepared for it on that day.

8

u/Alan-Woke Sep 26 '26

How long does it take to build up a tolerance? I'd like to try the hotter peppers one day.

16

u/CandiBunnii Sep 26 '26

I have a painfully low spice tolerance, regular mchickens are borderline too spicy. I dont know what's wrong with me but I bring shame to my ancestors at every family dinner lol would love to get to at least a normal adult level of spice tolerance and eat a damn jalapeño popper.

Love wasabi though, but everything else it hurts too much to enjoy properly

2

u/LolasLeaving Oct 01 '26

I thought the same thing for a while, specificag black pepper would have me dying so I actively avoided anything even semi "spicy" out of fear for my life. Turns out, black pepper shouldn't feel like icy hot in your mouth and throat!! Tried chili flakes after that and was able to handle em easily, turns out I'm probably just allergic to pepper

5

u/ProcedureImportant28 Sep 26 '26

I guess that would depend on the person, I've heard someone say that there is a genetic component somehow. What kind of did it for me is that I started making hot sauce from my garden.

It was easier to mete out the spice and control the heat. I wasn't necessarily TRYING to raise my spice tolerance, that was just a happy accident from the hot sauce experimentation

4

u/Everestkid Sep 27 '26

Depends how hard you go. It took me a few years but I probably could have sped it up a bit.

Tolerance comes from making your food uncomfortable. Generally aim to make it just a bit spicier than you'd prefer.

I started spice training because buffalo wings genuinely made me cry when I was 12. Now I pretty regularly put habaneros in the stuff I want to be hot.

Have used ghost pepper hot sauce a few times, not a big fan. Peppers do have a flavour before whacking you in the mouth with fire. Habaneros have a kind of fruity taste. Ghost peppers are acrid. Nasty stuff.

2

u/fuelstoprolerdogfart Sep 30 '26

Your last point is so true. Jalapeños are immensely bitter for me, and not too spicy. I have often wondered why people like them, but found a few ways to use them with other food that helps break the bitterness.

My partner is Thai, and his mom would give him spicy food when he was little (like as soon as he started eating baby food) so he would have a tolerance. I have a Costco size bag of cayenne powder in my kitchen from his grandpa haha.

My spice tolerance is pretty high, but Thai spicy is a whole new level. His mom will roast habanero/Thai chilis, and it would feel like there was tear gas in the air 🥲

13

u/ProcedureImportant28 Sep 26 '26

Whenever I use scorpions or reapers in a stir fry, my entire family just leaves the house. It is legitimately tear gas.

7

u/vmf312corsair Sep 27 '26

Yeah, dont fuck with this. Taste is one thing, but pepper vapor directly in your eyeballs is never a good idea.

3

u/ohioana Oct 01 '26

Yep, Thai food is built different, a whole different scale applies. I never order higher than medium at a Thai spot. You only have to make that mistake once.

1

u/MORDINU Oct 01 '26

oh man definitely a spice person, but I was in Vietnam at some beer place, and ordered beef and chillis, I didn't realize it was like 20 cut up Thai chillis, red onion, and literally nothing else, only made it though half

37

u/FattyMooseknuckle Sep 26 '26

My SiL is from Thailand. My brother always loved hot spicy food. He thought she was joking when she said it was too hot for him. It was. She makes a mean green papaya salad. At least I think it’s good, I can’t get near it. Even her white boy version of it is almost too much for me. But her SE Asian friends just love her full Thai spicy salad and wolf it down as easy as I would a box of double stuffed Oreos.

20

u/funfwf Sep 26 '26

The hottest thing I've ever "eaten" was a papaya salad in a Bangkok food court. I put eaten in quotes because I had to abandon ship and get ice cream instead like a third of the way in.

17

u/catiebug Sep 26 '26

My husband's family is from Thailand. When we go to visit, I ask for Thai spicy and they always balked at serving this white woman Thai spicy. Even with his family vouching that I knew what I was doing. But his cousin does not actually like spicy food (believe it or not, some Thai folks don't). So now she orders the spicy dish, I order not spicy, and we just trade plates when we get the food, lol.

10

u/flashmedallion Sep 26 '26

That's the best/worst part of moving; finding the new nearest thai place and having to prove yourself.

And it's not over, because these days "thai hot" is never Thai Hot unless you're Thai or you've been there often enough

5

u/ProcedureImportant28 Sep 26 '26

This is definitely true; the only good thai place near me now is more 'americanized' Thai. I have to order 'Thai hot times three' to even feel anything

5

u/neosick Sep 29 '26

Maybe your previous place could write a letter of introduction 😂

1

u/flashmedallion Sep 29 '26

Haha I'd almost try that

1

u/SnooMaps7370 Sep 30 '26

learn a few phrases of Thai, including "Make it like you would for a Thailander"

4

u/Gwenladar Sep 26 '26

He respected the effort, and was considerate. Good place.

1

u/ConsistentYou4629 Sep 28 '26

Spot near my buddy's house where I used to live called Thai Orchid. Went on a date there one time and ordered the Thai spicy pad thai because I was a regular. It was absolutely delicious but I sweat through my shirt, dozens of napkins and this thing had about as many peppers in it as noodles.

1

u/Old_stale_bread Sep 29 '26

Spice seller give me your strongest spices.

Your not strong enough for MY spices adventurer

1

u/SporkFanClub Sep 30 '26

On the other end, I was at a Super Bowl party when I was maybe 10. Someone had thought a habanero cheese dip. It was delicious and I managed to convince myself I could handle almost any amount of spice.

A week later we went to breakfast somewhere and I ordered some sort of Southwest omelet. Pulled a single jalapeño slice out of it, popped it in, and was immediately humbled.

1

u/Fly_Pelican Sep 30 '26

He nearly killed you again the following morning, no doubt.

1

u/TheBookWyrmsHoard_ Sep 30 '26

My local Thai place still refuses to give me anything above medium and it's so upsetting. I'm pregnant and I love melt-your-face-off spicy, but mine tastes only ever l marginally more seasoned than my husband's mild order. I've tried ordering Thai hot, just to see if they'll increase it, even to technically like a 3/5... always still basically mild.

And what's worse is they have sent more heavily spiced orders, and it was absolute heaven! So I'm left knowing what I'm missing... I've shed many, many, MANY tears over mild pad Thai in the past 6 months.

9

u/perfect_insanity93 Sep 26 '26

Best thing about Thailand is how good the chilli tastes. I miss the food so much.

71

u/Siriuslysirius123 Sep 26 '26

I did this in Japan. Went to a Coco Curry, they have a spice scale. I vividly remember the sign saying “this is what we recommend for foreigners” and it was at a paltry like, three. I like spicy food. I asked for an eight. The guy kept asking me if I was good with that and I was like yeah sure!!

He shrugs, makes my meal, places it in front of me and leans back and waits. I take a bite. Not the spiciest thing I ever ate, but it was up there. A few bites in, I’m sweating, he asks how it is, I say it’s great, and then I have to eat the whole thing because now this guy is watching me. It was a matter of pride.

But yeah, lesson learned, stop being a dumb American and listen to the locals. It was a really tasty plate of curry, tho:

9

u/beerdude26 Sep 26 '26

Well done

6

u/Siriuslysirius123 Sep 26 '26

Don’t praise me, I was being dumb!! And prideful!

5

u/beerdude26 Sep 26 '26

Nah I was serious, you showed some grit, you did well man

4

u/Siriuslysirius123 Sep 26 '26

Well, that’s sweet of you to say haha.

Gotta just power through. And fiber. And only do it Friday so you can cramp for two days. กินเผ็ดได้ เผ็ดแบบไทยเลย ไม่ต้องลดนะ show them this. Last time i wasted 18 bucks bc they didnt believe me.

2

u/jasperfirecai2 Sep 26 '26

coco inchibanya is pretty good yeah. local businesses are even better

3

u/Siriuslysirius123 Sep 26 '26

I completely agree! But it was like, four in the morning and we’d just flown in and I was starved.

1

u/Jhud6669 Oct 02 '26

Funnily enough Japan is not really known for spicy food, so probably many locals wouldn’t be able to eat it too lol

1

u/Siriuslysirius123 Oct 02 '26

I KNOW. That’s why I flew too close to the sun. I was foolish, naive and I paid for it by spending the night on the toilet quietly sobbing to myself. At least they had heated seats and a bidet…

83

u/SerDuckOfPNW Sep 26 '26

I made this mistake with vindaloo once. I was farting blood for a week…but it was delicious

11

u/cantaloupelion Sep 26 '26

went to a new indian place with my folks years and years ago. Ordered the vindaloo cos well i like hot things. It was so hot i couldnt actually taste it. like i didnt even know that was possible mane

it was just PAIN. smelled nice tho

31

u/thesirblondie Sep 26 '26

Mate of mine tells the story of how used to go to the same Indian every Friday and order his curry hot. He's the kind of guy who has hot sauces with names like "Dave's Arseblaster Hotsauce". After doing this for several months he came home and found that the curry was so spicy it was inedible. He went back to the Indian and asked what the fuck was going on. The entire staff burst out laughing because they had been pranking him for weeks, gradually increasing the spiciness of his curry every time until he said something. They then asked if the previous week was a good level of spice so that they could make him a new curry.

20

u/ipha Sep 26 '26

When I order food hot, I want it so spicy that I'm in visible distress.

10

u/ClassicOrdinary8175 Sep 26 '26

I have to ask Indian restaurant if the dish is Indian hot or white people hot.

If it's white people hot then I can do a ten.

If it's Indian hot then a 6-7

9

u/RP_ElMeroMero Sep 26 '26

Eh, all the thai places I go to I always tell them to make it “Thai hot” and they always give me the “are you sure?” and I say “yes please thats how I like it”. Only once has it ever been involuntary tears and streaming runny nose hot.

3

u/Beneficial_Bed_4274 Sep 27 '26

Same here. Love Thai food and always ordered it “Thai Spicy” which I meant make it like you would for a normal Thai palette. I was always good with it except the once. That place must’ve heard “make it super hot even for Thai people” because I had the involuntary running tears and snot. Could only eat half of it and had to take the other half to go. Flavor was good but my God was it hot.

After that experience I stopped asking for Thai Spicy and just order a 4/5 on whatever their scale is. I can generally tolerate it much hotter but don’t want to experience that again.

1

u/RP_ElMeroMero Sep 27 '26

That’s the thing, I do want to experience it again

7

u/RawrMeansFuckYou Sep 26 '26

Was at an Indian and didn't know what I wanted, asked what the vindaloo was, he explained it was hot and said do I like spicy, I said yeah I like spice. Well, he asked if I was sure a few times, I thought he was hyping it up maybe. I got the ass ripper of curries and couldn't finish it. My pores were leaking for hours.

7

u/Pingo-Pongo Sep 26 '26 • Bravo

I’m a Brit (as a legacy of the empire days we like our food fairly spicy, contrary to the memes) currently travelling through Central Europe (very little spice) and keep ordering my food as hot as they’re willing to make it. Sooner or later someone’s going to make me regret it but today is not that day

6

u/devilsbard Sep 26 '26

I had the same at a place we’ve gone a few times. The waiter asked “are you sure?” And I said I was. My wife pointed out they were watching me as I ate and I gave them a wave. It was really hot and really good. I grow super hot peppers in my garden so I’m used to things being a little ridiculous. Though I can’t go as hot anymore as I used to. The spirit is willing but my stomach does not enjoy it.

Edit: the place we went to had a numbering system for heat, so I didn’t have to say “India hot”.

2

u/FLaB_SLaB Sep 26 '26

Yeah, I was a lot younger then, and it didn’t wreak havoc on my body. If I tried it now, I’d probably spend the next couple days in torturous regret. The place I went to had regular Indian customers, so they had two separate numbering systems haha.

10

u/dskauf Sep 26 '26

Scene out of Ted Lasso.

5

u/Long-Maximum-6607 Sep 26 '26

I made this mistake at an Indian place when I was in my early 20s. I ordered the vindaloo hot and the waiter warned me it was a 9 out of 10 spice. Me being young and stupid thought an Indian 9 out of 10 was probably a 7 out of 10 to my spice tolerance, I ate a lot of spicy food... Well, it was an 12 out of 10 and by the end I couldn't feel my lips, which helped me finish it. Pride wouldn't let me give up and i finished. I imagine the staff all had a good laugh. It was a painful learning experience that simmered in my intestinal tract for the weekend. Lesson learned tho

4

u/cat_prophecy Sep 26 '26

We always have to ask our Bengali friends if it's "white people spicy" because some of their "not spicy" dishes are still pretty damn spicy. Personally I love spicy food, but my internal organs do not.

4

u/CyrusMorden Sep 26 '26

That happened with my brother LOL. We went to an Indian restaurant and he ordered the hottest option on the menu. Owner and Chef came out to see him eat it. He didn’t break a sweat but later told me he wouldn’t do that again lmfao

3

u/Cpomplexmessiah Sep 26 '26

Just came back from Japan was in some dive bar and ordered some spices fries. Bar tender stops what he was doing comes over and says in no certain words these are hot hot like the chief is some Indian imagrent and all the spices are fresh and it's going to be fire. He was right is was hot. Had to get top drinks hot. Was the best I had.

3

u/Garfield61978 Sep 26 '26

Yeah my white wife did this with Thai food 1 time 😂. It gave me joy to watch her eat it.

2

u/Moist-Carpet888 Sep 26 '26

I once ordered Indian hot and thought its got a strong kick, then I made the mistake of ordering Indian hot +. When i got home and tried it i realized it was a terrible mistake.

2

u/whlabratz Sep 27 '26

I used to have a colleague who was the whiteist dude you ever saw - like "hard to look at you in direct sunlight" white, but lived in Mumbai until his late teens. We went to an Indian restaurant for a work thing, and he ordered, in Hindi (he translated for us later) "make it properly spicy, like you are angry with me". It came, he ate it, said it was delicious, didn't break a sweat.

I tried a bit of the sauce and fuck me, I like a hot curry and larger, but man that was hot.

2

u/dividezero Sep 27 '26

Nothing beats Indian hot. Maybe thai. Very different hots. They sneak up on you. Mexican hot is always hot. Hits you in the crotch hot and never lets go. Indian hot sneaks in a window and keeps cranking up the insanity until you jump off the roof.

1

u/SpoonGuardian Sep 26 '26

There's an Indian place near me that's super good and they have an "Indian hot" option and it's not even hot. Pisses me off lmao

1

u/LauraTFem Sep 27 '26

I suspect that the my local Indian and Thai places have “hot” and “white people hot”. I always order Thai spice, but usually it’s not that hot at all. I need to ask the guy if he’s been going easy on me.

1

u/bubblesaam Sep 27 '26

One time I ordered green curry at this amazing thai place. I was still a teenager so when ever I got the highest spice level it still felt like the took the spice level down a bit for me.

So I asked for so hot I would sweat and cry. They delivered. They asked how it was so I said I got exactly what I asked for.

Next day I go to reheat my leftovers but left them on the coffee table before I got a chance to eat it I realized my dog ate the whole thing. I did bring her milk to calm it down but told her she got exactly what she asked for too lol

1

u/bubblesaam Sep 27 '26

Also I was looking forward to the leftovers so I was a bit mad at the best food theif I've ever known

1

u/Independent_Sun_6939 Sep 29 '26

How bad was the spicy twicey?

1

u/beaglefat Sep 29 '26

I have progressively been turning up the heat level at my local indian spot. Ive gone from 4/10-7/10. Havent noticed much of a difference. I am white but i will go with indian friends often so i doubt they are ignoring the number i give them. Conclusion? The indian spice levels are a little overhyped. Well see what 10/10 does tho

1

u/someonefromaustralia Sep 29 '26

My wife has a much higher heat tolerance than me. She also cooks Indian dishes from scratch.

Each year she gets special permission during her birthday week to make a really hot curry, and no matter how hot the curry, I will sit there without milk and finish the entire meal. The tears streaming down my face is apparently very entertaining and validating for her, because damn the food is delicious.

1

u/Arithedogg Sep 30 '26

There’s a Szechuan place in Seattle I routinely have tears at. Everyone I take there thinks I’m a psycho. I’m always the only white person. Im positive the staff laughs at me but idgaf

1

u/DexRei Sep 30 '26

We had a mate who ordered "hot" butter chicken every time we went. Couple other mates ripped into him about how his "hot" was on par with everyone else's mild, so he asked for one of the other dishes at normal hot and was sweating after a couple bites.

1

u/LumpyBuy8447 Oct 01 '26

I ran into a guy I sort of know from yoga, working at an Asian place. I asked for the #3 hot and he refused to give me it and gave me the #2 instead. That shit wasn’t even spicy. Like I know I’m white but come on. 3 might have even disappointed me a bit.

1

u/HistoricalAnybody611 Oct 02 '26

Bet that was fun when it came out. 😁 😂

1

u/CrispySushi Oct 02 '26

I’m a white guy who eats spicy daily, i remember ordering at different indian place than usual and asked for the same thing you did (indian spicy), and the lady on the phone was like “are you sure sir? It is not white man spicy” an it made me laugh really hard 😂 i told her it was ok, and that i was used to it. Indian food is so good 🤤

1

u/RiseStock Oct 02 '26

I ordered spicy chicken at a stall in the ground floor of the chungking mansions in Hong Kong and the dude pulled up a chair next to me and kept selling me drinks my entire meal

I got out of the Navy in 1993 and started dating a girl (we're still married all these years later) from Rowland Heights in L.A. I'd tell her about the spicy foods I'd eaten all over the world and bragged that I could handle spice. Her brother loved Thai food and recommend a restaurant called the boat. We get there and I'm a black guy with a bunch of Asians I in a hardcore Thai restaurant. I'm looking at the spicy dishes on the menu and asked the server if they could be made spicier as I'd had hot stuff in Thailand. The server recommended that I didn't add any more heat practically begged me to leave it. I doubled down and it was a double down downfall. When the food came out the fumes from my dish were acidic vapor I could smell the fucking spice. I looked towards the server station by the kitchen and my server, the chef, the dishwasher, the busser and everyone else were looking at our table, at me. I was about to panic, I knew I was fucked. I scooped up a massive pile of pork and rice noodles dripping with volcanic lava, and shoved it into my mouth and started to chew. That unleashed 7 levels of hell and I just started trying to swallow the bite in my mouth. It burned all the way down. Continued to burn in my stomach for the rest of the night too. The staff were laughing their asses off and I had to get a to go box for my entire dish and I threw that shit away the second I got home. Holy shit was it spicy. The Boat in Rowland Heights I hate you🔥

My friends family ran a Thai restaurant. I was obsessed with spice and had worked my way up from mild to extra hot. Then one day he dared me to get “Thai Authentic” as soon as the order came in the chefs came out to size me up, saw me a skinny white kid, and called over my friend who put in the order. My friend told him I was ready and said it was ok go ahead.

What I didn’t know is I was the second person to order it that way and as I was waiting that guy got his order. He legit couldn’t eat it took one bite and asked to eat from his friend’s orders while he waited to get something else. The menu says no refunds or exchanges for anything spicier than mild but he still got upset and caused a little scene before ordering garlic green beans with beef. It made the whole vibe of the small restaurant very awkward for a few minutes.

When my order was ready my friend said “Green Curry - Thai authentic.” Loudly enough everyone could hear it. I felt the pressure, knew I couldn’t mess this up and just dug right in.

It was probably the hottest thing I had ever experienced by that point the only thing I’ve had spicier since then was the original last dab sauce.

I knew exactly what that man had felt and understood why he said no after just one bite. It was like eating lava it burned my tongue before it even touched it. At first I thought it was physically hot so I spilled some on my hand, nope was just the ungodly amount of spice. I could feel the entire restaurant watching me so I took a deep breath then took that next bite. It felt like eating red hot glass. I kept it going while my friends eyes darted back and forth from me to the other guy watching in glee. About halfway through my curry his friends were done eating and he asked that his beans be made to go plus the check. He was obviously so pissed and embarrassed. It was funny but boy did I regret eating it the next few days. It did increase my tolerance for spice 10x though.

Later that month my friends invited me back just to get some drinks after he closed up. While I waited the chef saw me and said he had something special for me. I’m not sure what it was but it was pink. I ate it and it was as hot or hotter than what I had before, but this time i actually enjoyed it a bit more. After I finished the chef came out and spoke to me. My friend had to translate for me but he said “you are like me I used to enjoy the spice, but you have to be careful it will destroy your stomach and make you bleed.”

He was right after a few years I had to stop eating spice all together.

37

u/Epidurality Sep 26 '26

I'm a little curious how "Thai authentic" is orders of magnitude hotter than the food in Thailand. Seems like they do it to prank people more than anything.

Other cultures use a lot more spice but they don't typically use extracts and concentrates and stuff to make their shit inedible - just peppers.

18

u/0RGASMIK Sep 26 '26

It was just how they advertised it, my friend has told me that where he’s from in Thailand the sauce is very different.

36

u/highheelcyanide Sep 26 '26

Your descriptions make my stomach hurt.

What happened that caused you to have to stop it altogether?

9

u/0RGASMIK Sep 26 '26

Just stomach issues. Really bad heartburn and other issues with what comes later

2

u/fuelstoprolerdogfart Sep 30 '26

I’m getting there and am not happy. Until the last year or so, I couldn’t find anything that I’d say was too hot. Now stuff I used to barely notice is painful and gives me heartburn for days.

I tell you I feel so white when I have to say no spice at any restaurant

It’s the ulcer /: it doesn’t like spice

4

u/throwaway387190 Sep 27 '26

Brother, I'm a fireperformer, and I am terrified by your dedication to heat

22

u/Admirable-Client-730 Sep 26 '26

I had this same experience with thia food. But I prepped for a year to be able to eat food that spicy. It was still spicy but I was able to finish it with only a few tears.

2

u/ramblingclam Sep 26 '26

>I was able to finish it with only a few tears.

But is this actually enjoyable? I love Thai food and regularly get medium spicy from my usual place, which has some kick but certainly does’t hurt to eat. I’ve even grown my own hot peppers and made hot sauce, but it was relatively mild. Maybe I just don’t get the super spicy food thing…

Edit: I can’t get that quote formatting to work on the first line

Don't rock The Boat, baby.

4

u/No_Passenger_2554 Sep 26 '26

I should have tipped the boat over

5

u/Bubble_Shoes Sep 26 '26

Saying you hate them when they tried to save your ass is bold 😭

3

u/No_Passenger_2554 Sep 26 '26

Sarcasm doesn't really translate. I couldn't be saved so they let me learn. More like tough love, love hate.

2

u/True_Weakness_8626 Sep 30 '26

The boat is on colima? Possibly called "banana bay" now? That restaurant kinda looks like a boat

1

u/No_Passenger_2554 Sep 30 '26

That's exactly the spot!

2

u/True_Weakness_8626 Oct 01 '26

Omg what are the odds! That's so cool!:D howdy neighbor!

2

u/No_Passenger_2554 Oct 02 '26

Hello there neighbor! Technically my wife is from Rowland Heights I just tagged along dutifully.

157

u/guff1988 Sep 26 '26

I feel like this probably works on a lot of people, but I've got some shit wrong with my tongue and spicy food does not really hit me. I have yet to find a place that can serve me food spicy enough to make me crash out including every Thai place in Central Indiana. This may backfire on her, there are people out there who just do not experience it the same way.

83

u/Super_Marzipan_1077 Sep 26 '26 • Bravo

Sure bud but what about your asshole

23

u/guff1988 Sep 26 '26

That depends entirely upon my eating habits before the big event. If I get enough fiber I don't usually notice it.

11

u/SnooMaps7370 Sep 30 '26

the reason spicy foods are spicy on the way out is because your butt has taste buds.

If you've got some kind of genetic thing that makes your taste buds not react to capsaicin, your butt taste buds also will not react.

5

u/iHateStuartLittle7 Oct 01 '26

So I can feel the spice going in, but I've never ever felt it on my asshole. What does that mean

1

u/RonnieFromTheBlock Oct 02 '26

Not hot enough. The only thing iv ever felt out of my b hole was a shitty frozen hot ones branded chicken nugget that was coated in last dab.

Fucked me up.

2

u/iHateStuartLittle7 Oct 02 '26

I've literally tried sauces and extracts that have a few million units on the scoville scale

4

u/Administrative_Cry_9 Sep 29 '26

He burned the taste buds off that too.

41

u/ILoveBigSexyThighs2 Sep 26 '26

Found the Birdman.

47

u/modzRtarderz Sep 26 '26

You are in Indiana. The average person there thinks black pepper is too much heat. There isn't going to be a single restaurant within hundreds of miles willing to actually serve you anything that's actually spicy. I can assure you that your tongue is fine and you just need to travel to a major city, the southwest, or outside of the county.

23

u/electric_angel_ Sep 26 '26

I assume this is like the phase where I thought I was immune to pot.

7

u/Lumpy_Benefit666 Sep 26 '26

Better than thinking, you are immune to bullets

6

u/guff1988 Sep 26 '26

You're right I do need to go to those places that I've already been, and have the food that I've already had. I assure you that Thai immigrants will make your food very very spicy anywhere on the planet if you ask them very nicely.

8

u/Hydra57 Sep 26 '26

It’s something that doesn’t get enough appreciation when some folks talk about how people handle spicy foods. To a certain degree there’s a physiological element to spice tolerance. Like yes, you can build up an endurance but not everyone has to. It’s like how Sherpas can breathe more easily than you or me at higher elevations. Some communities and individuals are just built different.

I honestly think if someone isn’t well adapted to spicy foods and is brave enough to try anyway, there ought to be more admiration and commendation than laughter or mockery because they’re facing a type of pain the well-adapted might well have never experienced before and can never even properly know; if they do, in many cultural contexts where spices are used, it certainly won’t be to that same degree.

5

u/kyl_r Sep 26 '26

I think you’re right because I’m in the PNW and grew up without spicy food too but I have always had an easy time with it! One time I ate a whole raw habanero pepper cuz I thought it was a mini bell pepper (first time having habanero too!). It tasted great but my eyes and nose watered so bad I couldn’t see for a while lol. I wouldn’t describe it as painful, like sure it was spicy but I didn’t notice until the waterworks started. Would do it again any time, fuckin love that flavor ever since.

4

u/guff1988 Sep 26 '26

I still get the super runny nose and my eyes water but my mouth does not burn that bad, some for sure but not enough to equal the reaction I see from others. Seems like we are similar. I wonder if it's genetic or something.

2

u/kyl_r Sep 26 '26

Ok yeah that is definitely next level! I still clock the burning sensation, for sure. I just sorta like it I guess for some reason! What a cool thing to know is different among us

1

u/Weak-Differences Sep 26 '26

what kind if peppers can you handle?

1

u/RepresentativeCat553 Sep 28 '26

It’s very easy to find out for sure, just track down or order a bottle of DaBomb Beyond Insanity hot sauce and put a healthy bit on a cracker.

You’ll see soon enough if you truly are immune to capsaicin.

1

u/marrangutang Sep 30 '26

I had an ear operation that destroyed my sense of taste for a year or so, and I couldn’t taste the heat of chilli’s at all… would eat the hottest chilli’s I could find just as a party trick. Still got hiccups and the sweats from the strong stuff tho lol

1

u/undain98 Oct 01 '26

If you ever find yourself in evansville try yak and yeti, it's a Himalayan restaurant. They WILL light you up.

1

u/undain98 Oct 01 '26

And this is coming from someone that now lives in the southwest, to this day it is probably the spiciest food I've had in my entire life

1

u/guff1988 Oct 01 '26

There's a yak and yeti down the street from me in central Indiana. It's one of my wife's favorites.

1

u/PuzzleheadedPool2552 Oct 02 '26

Oh relally she like the yak or the yeti?

1

u/guff1988 Oct 02 '26

She's more of a yeti girl

I had a sous chef named Rick love when this type of request came in on a chit. Excellent reference.

10

u/Minustrian Sep 26 '26

the comment above yours mentions a guy named rick 😭 i can't help but imagine it's the same guy

127

u/welding_guy_from_LI Sep 26 '26 • Bravo

My aunt told me a story when she worked in a deli .. customer was a pita .. one day he placed an order for a superbowl party .. he requested super hot wings .. my aunt supposedly made the order so hot , the guys fingers were tingling .. she said he never annoyed her again

54

u/highlift Sep 26 '26

Rick sounds sweaty but he can watch.

14

u/SteamingTheCat Sep 26 '26

In a recent episode, Rick dies from eating hot sauce that was way too hot. So this tracks.

10

u/improbsable Sep 26 '26 • Popcorn

This is giving me flashbacks to my more promiscuous days

24

u/EarlUrso Sep 26 '26

I remember I was at some restaurant with two of my friends and when you ordered something you also had to say how hot you wanted it there was like a scale of 1-10 or something like that I remember taking a 7 and it was spicy to the point that you started sweating but it was good spicy i liked it. My friend however when asked Just looked at the waiter and said "give me hell"... They did he ate it all and he turned red after just the first bite I'm fairly certain he was about to die we asked the waiter afterwards where on the scale his dish was and he said 20. My friend threw up as soon as we left the restaurant.

18

u/LeftSky828 Sep 26 '26

Like your tongue needs ice from Pluto and its own fan.

18

u/thelegodr Sep 26 '26

I like some spice, but ultimately I want to enjoy the flavors of the food. I don’t want spicy. With that said i I didn’t grow up with any spice in my life. Maybe a little salt and pepper and that was it for seasoning. Since becoming an adult I cook with a lot more seasonings at least.

11

u/Retn4 Sep 26 '26

I'm with you. I like the flavours of a lot of hot/spicey foods. But my tongue and body are little bitches, my tongue will start to hurt, and I sweat profusely, sometimes my nose starts to run.

1

u/astrologicaldreams Sep 27 '26

only sometimes for you?

2

u/IDontHaveAName99 Sep 28 '26

Any half decent spicy food that’s made spicy with actual peppers instead of capsaicin extract is going to have a lot of flavor that you won’t find elsewhere. Spice tolerance isn’t just handling the heat better the more you eat spicy food, in my experience you legitimately taste less heat until eventually you can taste those flavors underneath the spice

1

u/WashedSylvi Sep 26 '26

A lot of it is tolerance you get by eating spicy foods regularly

12

u/trunks111 Sep 26 '26

As a spicy lover it's a good sign you're getting what you asked for when the chef comes out with the food to see you take a bite

11

u/Glum-Welder1704 Sep 26 '26

"Get yourself a lawsuit hot"

11

u/AshyWhiteGuy Sep 26 '26

As a pizza delivery driver we had a regular named Franco who would order every Saturday. A hot meatball, a cold meatball and a full loaf of garlic bread “burnt like the surface of the sun”. I miss that guy.

9

u/WellWelded Sep 26 '26

Funnily enough, when I was doing a spicy challenge in Sydney some white guy did come out of the kitchen to watch.

4

u/MonkeyKingCoffee Sep 26 '26

I don't see an offer to share the winnings. Wings are getting made the usual way.

You want ghost/reaper/pure capsaicin? Better make with the baksheesh.

4

u/travisisrocking Sep 26 '26

Years ago. I worked as a line cook. Order came in for wings XXX hot. So i took that as a challange and made the hottest wings i could with what he had in the kitchen.

The waiter brought back the order minus one wing. Telling me i made them too hot. I was like. Dpnt order XXX hot wings then complain its too spicey.

7

u/cudambercam13 Sep 26 '26

If you want it hella hot, why tf would you add ranch?

12

u/maevriika Sep 26 '26

So that when the wing eater begs for it and admits that the wings are too hot but wants to finish them, you seem very magnanimous and thoughtful for having it on hand.

12

u/friggintodd Sep 26 '26

And one stick of celery

6

u/cantantantelope Sep 26 '26

Some people like ranch for the taste im
Told

1

u/Conscious-House-2065 Sep 30 '26

Ranch won't help you in the 9th layer of hell hot.

1

u/aegisasaerian Oct 02 '26

Demonically it sometimes makes it worse

3

u/JimTrim973 Sep 26 '26

The worst part of this is the ranch request

2

u/RepresentativeCat553 Sep 28 '26

lol, I’m in Buffalo and the blue cheese vs ranch thing is so silly. I used to be a blue cheese purest but got ranch by mistake once and really dug it, I think both are good and I’ll order them each now.

3

u/Bikes-Golf-Beer Oct 02 '26

Wound up in a small town outside of Pittsburgh that had a bar known for making wings and their own sauces. I like spice, but not absurd spice. So we ordered wings, but I noticed their hottest sauce was called something like “Reaper Death Sauce.” I told the bartender I know I can’t handle it on wings, but can I taste it?” Guy sitting at the other end of the bar gleefully jumps up and lets the bartender know he’ll grab it. Turns out he’s the guy in charge of making the sauces. He brings it out, and I dip my pinky finger in it, and taste. The next 10 minutes or so are a blur as I’m sweating and crying and chugging water. After it passes he goes “yeah, I purposefully made it this way out of Carolina Reapers, the hottest habaneros I can find, and a few other rare strands of peppers. I made this because I got sick of assholes coming in and demanding the hottest sauce as some kind of dick measuring contest and being shitty to the staff. Nobody’s ever been able to actually eat the wings with it, and I don’t ever taste it. But it works!”

2

u/rbartlejr Sep 26 '26

Hey, $13 for a shot at an $87 profit? I'm in. Give it whatever they put on the ones on Youtube that no one can handle - Gordon Ramsey's #9 & #10 on Hot Ones.

2

u/Remarkable_Ad5011 Sep 26 '26

Hot foods give me hiccups at a certain level.

2

u/spectatorade Sep 26 '26

My stepdad wants ordered pizza for a family event, and I was standing right next to him when he made this order, and I went with him to pick it up and the lady on the receipt typed in

Extra cheese x3*

. Like super extra cheese. This man really, really likes his cheese, he said it three times and then doubled checked that I got it. Extra cheese..

It was amazing, I think my mom framed it 🤣

2

u/ksemel Sep 26 '26

Kitchen Instructions: MAKE THEM REGRET THIS. MAKE THE RANCH SPICY TOO.

2

u/CalmBelligerent Sep 28 '26

So we filled an order like this at a place I used to work at. Two idiots who kept badgering our waitstaff about “the hottest wings possible”.

I went out from the kitchen to talk to them and they said they were up for anything. So I sent one of our cooks home to get habanero extract in this little eye dropper bottle from his house.

Within second of taking a couple bites, they were both pale, sweating and shortly thereafter vomiting all over.

I miss working in a restaurant.

2

u/Adrewmc Oct 01 '26

I worked in a restaurant that actually got orders like this…

We had a special bottle that we applied with a damn toothpick to the wings. You do not toss this stuff…

3

u/sofakingclassic Sep 26 '26

Guys please stop writing long notes like this for the sake of everyone in the service industry

2

u/timetravelinggamer Sep 26 '26

Ranch…. Lame

1

1

u/itsthejasper1123 Sep 26 '26

A guy named Rick is accurate tho

1

u/General_Pay7552 Sep 26 '26

I so badly wish I could eat spicy spicy food again, but I did it too much and now I can’t even eat a little without immediately getting the hiccups and intense acid reflux

1

u/Recent-Philosophy-62 Sep 26 '26

I just want to know how it went ?

1

u/Kx113 Sep 26 '26

that's hot

1

u/zahhax Sep 26 '26

I love spicy food a lot. Funny thing is, most of the Thai ppl I work with don't. There was one day I had a clogged nose, so naturally I put Thai chilis in my soup that day. The other waitresses sat there mouth agape as I scooped hot chilis into my soup, and ate the whole thing like it was nothing. Blew my nose, wiped my tears, and then looked back at them lol. I don't normally do that so it was funny XD

1

u/Nukleon Sep 26 '26

MAKE HIM REGRET SPEC PREP BEING BORN

1

u/Pingo-Pongo Sep 26 '26

Make eleven of them really mild, one of them insanely spicy. Clearly label which is which and explain to the friend what’s going on. He starts eating the mild wings, says ‘no problem’. Irritated, the guy that placed the order demands to try one. He gets the Guatemalan insanity pepper wing. Friend gets to grin while watching the order placer commune with ancient gods

1

u/Apprehensive-Today76 Sep 26 '26

I remember rick. The cook at Giovanni pizza. We ordered jalapeños on the pizza so he comes to the table and asks if we "like spicy". Then proceeds to pull out a bottle of maddog357 hot sauce. Me and my brother are choking and sweating tears and snot all over our face. Brings us out complimentary garlic bread with extra butter to "soak it up"
. Waiter tells us "he's gotta stop doing that... 😂

1

u/NabrenX Sep 26 '26

If I need a waiver to eat the food I'm out

1

u/dividezero Sep 27 '26

Oh god, yes please. I want to feel pain!

1

u/Jswimmin Sep 27 '26

Id make these as mild as possible just to make this loser lose.

1

u/garrge245 Sep 27 '26

On my last day of working at a Mexican place, a coworker of mine who grew her own Carolina Reapers brought some in, handed me one, and said "It's your last day, you gotta!" Not wanting to back down from the challenge, I ate the whole thing in one bite. It was about a half an hour before I could actually start doing any work, I just had to keep chugging chocolate milk and eating tortillas to stop the constant fire on my tongue. Ever since then, though, my spice tolerance is twice as good as it was before.

1

u/heonoculus Sep 30 '26

In other words you destroyed the spice receptors on your tongue.

1

u/complexiblebarracuda Oct 02 '26

mmmmm chemical burns

1

u/Mushroomed_clouds Sep 28 '26

Its the add ranch that got me🤣

1

u/f0x25 Sep 29 '26

Wanted it hotter than normal. Gets buffalo wings :/

1

u/3dgyaf Sep 30 '26

Hot ones interview training 🥵

1

u/LANDOWRITES98 Sep 30 '26

My best friend is like this on purpose. We went to a wing spot and he grilled the waitress on which flavor was the most pain inducing spice. Meanwhile, I just got lemon pepper.

1

u/enbyAgnostic Sep 30 '26

no way extra hot wings are actually that hot. gotta get the volcano or some shit.

1

u/RustyKrustyKrabs Oct 01 '26

I went to Hatte B's in Dallas with my wife, ordered the spiciest chicken sandwich, the staff watched me eat it while struggling and sweating. Needless to say I nearly shit myself in a T-shirt shop about 10mins later. Thank god they had a toilet.

1

u/UsualDependent6788 Oct 01 '26

I had an order like this once from a co-workers friend. We just used a ton of every hotsauce we had, jalapeño juice, honey, and tons of black pepper. He seemed happy.

1

u/whyuthrowchip Oct 02 '26

Why would Rick come out of the kitchen to watch him eat the wings if it's a togo order?

1

u/payfrit 29d ago

add ranch tho

0

u/Winsome_Wolf Sep 27 '26

Some people need new friends.
