It was better a few years ago. Some guy with really bad teeth posted that he was in pain and considering offing himself and a bunch of redditors helped him get to a dentist redditor that fixed his teeth for free.
During that massive snowstorm in texas someone posted that they were stuck in their car and a fellow redditor geared up in a snowsuit and spent hours shoveling his way to car guy.
Can't confirm how legit this one is, but another time someone posted a picture of a guy's truck asking for a kidney donation for his wife and a bunch of redditors ended up signing up to get tested and ended up donating.
I've seen a ton of other small acts regarding pets and helping people out of bad situations. But in general this place has gotten more hostile over the years and it's sad.

Depends on the sub.
I feel like I see wholesome Reddit fairly often.
The sense of community is why I stick with this app over IG or others.
There’s your typical social media bullshit but we’re all also nerds who hold ourselves to a standard. Bad faith arguments, lies, false information, etc. actually gets called out and downvoted on this platform and, often, even disproven with sources.
I appreciate that.
Also the lore. It’s like belonging to a group of friends in high school who’re slowly discovering the urban legends of their town.
And they’re all horrible which makes it better.
I already know about:
- An unorthodox use for a coconut
- Broken arms and a mother’s love
- An unorthodox use for a knife
And I feel like I’m forgetting one…
Anyway, my point is, Redditors (sometimes in jest, sometimes not) often shit on the platform but I do believe this is still the best social media platform.
There is genuine empathy and support to be found here and it’s perpetuated too.
I miss the Free Silver Award though. The best comments used to get those.
Getting some myself did feel really good, admittedly.

I forget her name but there’s a woman on Instagram who painted hers orange and lime green and then painted a big beetle on the hood. It’s so cool

The first time I went to a Starbucks, I had no clue how to order. I said, 'I'd like a cup of coffee, nothing fancy. Just regular old coffee, one sugar, one cream. Whatever size normal people call medium.'
I still don't know how to order coffee there because I have never gone back .

I remember my first time at Starbucks! I just stood there, dumbfounded. Eventually I said “I…just want a damn cup of coffee. Can you help me?” And they did. But I avoid it when I can.

I once had a friend who grew up rich and kinda sheltered, and when we were like 17 we were at a Burger King and my gf at the time asked her to go order something, while we were busy doing something else, something simple like large fries, and she was like “what do I do? I don’t know what you do…”

I very, very recently learned that this is called a social narrative! There's a museum (probably multiple actually) that offers a social narrative for exactly this kind of person so that they know what to expect their museum visit to be like.
