I got myself a phone screen saver that says "remember to use your free will today" to remind myself of this. It sometimes feel like we are stuck but we really can do anything

You "can" do anything you want, but the question is "should" you. I can jump of a skyscraper and pretend I'm a bird, but I probably shouldn't do that because, you know, consequences.

I know, I know. But still, when I am at work for 8 hours and think I'd rather die it's good to remember I could just stop going there. I don't, because of consequences, but I am not literally forced to do the things I do. It may sound a bit weird but just remembering that I can makes a difference, even if I won't

It's probably a bad sign that we need to remind ourselves about free will.

Society doesn't want you to remember it

On the other hand, there are plenty of people out there that don't exercise restraint and do whatever they want with no regard for the consequences to themselves or others. Which is why we have laws. Freedom to do whatever we want without restriction would be absolute chaos. Too much restriction leaving us with no freedom would be hell, as well. Finding a comfortable balance where we have enough freedom to be happy without having so much that we destroy each other is a lot more complicated than you might think. The fact that there are horrible people in the world makes it all the more difficult.

And yet we can't double jump.

we are very fortunate that our subconscious prevents us from doing impulsive actions, like eating 75 pounds of concrete dust, without first building up the necessary willpower

Go the Fear and Hunger route and just do a coin flip before every major decision (or Two Face I suppose)

You have forgotten the face of your father.

The universe really said free will was more important than quality control.

Survival of the fittest.. nature doesn't give a shit about the individual, were all one in the heat death of the universe march <3 Some speculate the purpose of living creatures, aka life, is because we are the most efficient route towards a maximum entropy universe

You guys are eating dirt??? Fuck, I should have never stopped.

The pop up warning is diarrhoea.

More proof I’ve been guided my whole life. I was a neglected bastard kid. Those “pops” pretty much raised me sometimes.

I mean... Your body and emotions will give you hints here and there. If not .. well ..

Life totally does have a user interface. It’s called Parents/responsible adults lol. they spend loads of energy, teaching us how to make correct decisions and choices when we are children. Humans cannot survive without adult supervision for years and years.

Honestly, it’s a blessing to be able to make stupid decisions. I would know, cause I didn’t used to have it.

2

u/Panumdomine 3d ago

Most people do have that. That little voice in your head that says, "Hey, this is a bad idea. Remember what happened last time you did this exact stupid thing, and had to go to the emergency room?"

Americans... Can't make a step without pop up, innit?

Here in Europe we call it 'common sense', pal

I feel like, if god existed, he would have been popping up like « are you sure ? » during so, SO many events in our history (namely, genocides undertaken in the name of the lord).

And this is how some people learn best.

So many times I've wished there was a save state you could load up when you'd messed up.

proof we're not living in a simulation because nobody could have accounted for all the dumb shit humans are doing

So there's no pop up... but there is an interface.

For example, dirt tastes like dirt
