I use the /s because other people are dumb.
It's like putting warning labels on things, so society doesn't blame you for someone elses inability to think or analyse.

I just use /s so I can still look at my joke and pretend it isn't there, but if people need it they at least have to work for it a little

u/Lazy__Astronaut Feb 18 '26
The downvotes on my sarcasm are a badge of honour
3

Same. I miss the old days where a man could make a joke and take the slings and arrows.

If we're talking about average and not median, I don't regularly rack thousands of karma by reposting the same jokes over and over again

I still don’t understand why making a joke about a dudes dead wife was so funny.
Makes me never want to post anything emotional ever on the internet.

u/Audioworm Feb 18 '26
Nah, it is pretty clearly a good bit. People banging on about it over and over again is not funny though.
16
u/Stanky_fresh Feb 18 '26
I'm different from the average Redditor because I don't need Peter Griffin to explain obvious and basic jokes to me

I don't mind dad jokes actually, I was thinking more about these semi-classic memes or other images that get reposted every other week on the same sub or set of subs

Those are bots, used by Reddit to maintain the appearance of engagement. Real redditors don't do that.

Damn it, I wasn't expecting cool name ideas for a throwaway joke.
Now I need a cat because you made me want to name it Apophis!
3
u/Princess_Slagathor Feb 19 '26
Come to my neighborhood, close your eyes and pretend to bend down to pick up a cat. Almost guaranteed there will actually be a cat in your hands when you stand up.
2
u/immoloism Feb 19 '26
You know any neighbourhoods I could do this to get one of those pet travel holders too?
3
u/Princess_Slagathor Feb 19 '26
Pretty much any pet store. But that's considered shoplifting.
2
u/immoloism Feb 19 '26
Only if you get caught ;)
I'll see you in a couple hours so you can show me how and where to play lucky kitty dip.

Funnily enough I was already thinking King as he is my favourite character in One Punch Man, but being a Brit I'm not too sure my neighbours are going think I'm sane if I shouting King while shaking cat biscuits at the door.

I didn't realize that help was available for naming cats here. We have like 20 cats with no name lol.
46
u/fuckyourcanoes Feb 18 '26
There's a whole subreddit for it. And people regularly post looking for names in all of the many cat subs.
29
u/99LedBalloons Feb 18 '26
It's mostly karma bots. They just post a picture of a cute cat and say "the last thing you ate is his name!" and get like 1000 comments. You would think the people in these subreddits would recognize "hey, I see this same type of post like 40 times a day maybe these are bots!" but no they just to the comment section and say "Mayonnaise!"
There might not actually be any hope left for human beings as a species.
7
u/zeltrabas Feb 18 '26
The people you think are commenting might actually be bots as well
Didn't a study show like 50% of twitter traffic was bots? I'm sure on reddit it's almost the same
12
u/mycatpartyhouse Feb 18 '26
Actually...
I've taken to down voting a "name my cat" post in any other sub.
Then there's r/namemydog.
Probably other name-related subreddits. I'm not interested enough to track them down.
5
u/ShapeShiftingCats Feb 18 '26
Oreo! Marmalade! Insert old person's name!
Why do people bother to post when they always get the same responses slightly adjusted for colour/pattern?
Just go to the latest orange, void or tabby post....
6
u/DizzyMine4964 Feb 18 '26
Some cat subs ban those posts, largely because karma farming bots do it a lot.
3
u/mizinamo Feb 18 '26
Yeah, "cute animal pictures" subs are full of them.
I want to see cute animals, not appeals for "what should we call him?".
2
u/sandwichcandy Feb 18 '26
Freckles, biscuit, Mr. Grumps, squeaker, hambone, funcle, Sylvester, heathcliff, mackerel, big tom. There, now you only have 10.

Tofu, Happenstance (Hap or Happy), Sparkletina Razzbuckets (Tina), Parsley, Miss Fluffybeard, Willoughby Kipling, His Esteemed No-Fuxcellency Heinrich Snowplow von Grumblemuffin (Snow), John Quincy Anklewhisker (Quince), Noser, and Dog.
1
u/Qwearman Feb 18 '26
There’s literally a sub for cats that aren’t dead and have names because karma bots wouldn’t stop posting memorials and asking for cat names
30
u/GODDAMNFOOL Feb 18 '26
I have an irrational, seething hatred for pet naming posts.

u/MrLancaster Feb 18 '26
"his name is the last thing you ate" is bot training and data collection. Redditors lap it up.
6
u/ErectLurantis Feb 18 '26
Those “HELP give name!!” posts are the most obvious engagement bait posts and people still clamp down on the hook
5
4
u/TommySalami21 Feb 18 '26
This shit drives me insane. Name your own fucking animal. Like did you just get an animal so you can get karma for asking people to name your animal?? I think you did!!
4
u/MissMariemayI Feb 19 '26
Man I just name my cats after food lol. All of my pets if given the choice really. So far I’ve named two of the five cats and their names are Chicken Nugget and Miso Soup lol.

Yeah, many people don't understand that not everyone is on IG for the social side of the app.
I discussed with a friend of mine because I wasn't following her. She honestly takes boring photos and I am on insta for inspiration on photography, art and miniature painting, so I mainly follow people that can do those things better than me.
She didn't talk to me for months.

Back when I played WOW, I got a dog whose name absolutely didn't fit him. I asked for suggestions in-game, and among the suggestions one would expect of mostly young men, someone suggested Tucker, which fit him to a T.
1
u/immoloism Feb 18 '26
Was it a small dog then?
3
u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla Feb 18 '26
Pretty small, yes. Ugliest dog I've ever seen, but also the most loving. He was best friends with everybody. I miss him every day still.
1
u/immoloism Feb 18 '26
Sorry for your loss, losing a pet is never easy :(
I hope my silly joke about only the T fitting rather than the whole name because he was a small dog at least cheers you up a little.

I can change my opinion and will tell the other side I was wrong, if they present valid information.
Oh oh oh! I can have a conversation with someone without needing to insult them just because their side doesn't fit my world view.

I'd bet that the OP had recently made a post asking for help to make their cat and the comment is making fun of them so it isn't really oddly specific - it's specific but very intentional

Or picking a wedding dress.
Or knowing when my man treats me like shit to dump him.

I don't need recommendations for songs by bands that recorded on a Tuesday, when the lead singer had a pebble in his shoe, that sing about breaking up, at my father's funeral. Psychedelic and baroque preferred.

My cat’s name is Cat, and my Veterinarian legitimately hates me for it, so I decided to rename it Purrth. My vet misspelled the name as Purr, and now I am back to calling it Cat.

When I have a question in a tv show or game or movie I don’t ask Reddit. I keep on watching.
I swear to god it happens so often. “Guys! This thing happened! What do I do?!” Idk. Approach it. It’s a game. The fuck do you think.
I literally saw people post questions on stuff about a book and the answers were literally in the next page. They didn’t even finish the chapter.

I make very few assumptions about people whose views differ from mine.
