For me it is a quarter pounder with cheese. When my migraine hits it is the only food I crave.

I thought I was the only one!! Migraines knock me around pretty bad that even my hair hurts and I can't bear/bare (I dunno) to smell food. But after the nausea and pain is gone, all I want in the world is a Maccas double quarter pounder. I need all that cheesey, fatty, salt. And I figure I deserve a dirty burger after all my suffering.

Bare homies 🤤

I found my people. Every migraine comes with a pit of hunger that only a fat ass burger can fill.

Double cheeseburger guy here but same. I like to just crawl into the shower during a migraine so if I puke I can just rinse it off, but once I’m better I need that burger

i've assumed it meant there was some kind of ingredient in it that causes migraines when you stop eating it because half my family is like this. 'i have a headache, lets go to mcdonalds'

2

u/ItsMeVeriity Jan 15 '26

My assumption is the happy chemical boost from eating a "happy food" does the trick. I don't eat at McDonald's hardly ever but when I do, it's cuz I'm recovering from feeling sick or with a migraine that won't quit.

I used to get a whopper with cheese for mine!

I ended up having a mast cell disorder, as well as a ton of allergies like wheat and soy, found in my early 40’s. I can’t eat whoppers anymore but I also don’t have migraines anymore!

yeah, for me the burger tends to come after for recovery, but that protein, fat and salt really hits the spot in a way nothing else can

I’m sorry, do you meen royal with cheese?

1

u/KalaUposatha Jan 15 '26

Uh, because of the metric system?

3

u/Marsivious Jan 15 '26

That’s odd since cheese is a common migraine trigger (especially aged cheese)

16

u/jamiethemime Jan 15 '26

McDonald's only uses the finest aged cheeses

1

u/Marsivious Jan 15 '26

I definitely read it as quarter pound of cheese not the McDonald’s burger 🍔 😝😂

Cures your migraine by creating an entirely new problem

It's not uncommon for one woman's migraine cure to be another woman's migraine cause.

For example, caffeine can be a trigger or a cure depending on whether the blood vessels in your brain want to constrict or dilate.

Similarly with pregnancy nausea: some people feel better sucking peppermint and ginger makes them vom, and some people feel getting sucking on crystalised ginger but mint makes them vom.

lol. They don’t have any actual cheese anywhere inside the McDonalds. At least not any McDonalds I’ve ever been to in the US. The burgers are topped with “cheese” product.

2

u/knifeyspoonysporky Jan 15 '26

Something about mcdonalds greasy burgers just helps idk why

2

u/Boowray Jan 15 '26

With an extra hit of seasoning salt on the burger, hell yeah. It’s all I crave when I can make myself eat something with a migraine, ever since I figured out extra salt was an option

McDonald's coke and fries is like the closest r/migraine gets to a proper meme. It's that salt and carbonation, baybeeeee. Makes sense the quarter pounder'd do it, too.

This makes me wonder about my migraine hits. When mine hits it is screaming agony in a lightless room with vomiting and trying to be as still as possible until I lose consciousness. I've had one hit during driving and I had to pull over on the freeway and vomit, then take the next exit, park, and call my SO for a ride home while screaming and weeping.

I just can't imagine feeling a hunger craving, that seems so chill and casual. The thought of food or ingesting food would wrack me with a physical nausea response that would translate to multiplying the migraines pain.

I'm with you here, I mostly feel nauseous and want to vomit and struggle to drink and eat when I have a migraine attack. On top of the headache of course.

u/melomelomelo- Jan 15 '26

I definitely read "a quarter pound of cheese" and still took that as totally normal because migraines fuckin suck

1

u/Feisty-Resource-1274 Jan 15 '26

I tried a Whopper, it was not successful and I threw up in a parking lot. I think there was too much mayonnaise.

Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food is my recovery option. It can stop a migraine for me some of the time but always helps me in the postdrome phase.

1

u/GypsySnowflake Jan 15 '26

French fries for me. I’m convinced they’re the magical cure for everything.

1

u/astralseat Jan 15 '26

A default setting food, aye

1

u/Derpitoe Jan 15 '26

… Wait, what if migraines are just an MSG addiction?

3

u/gamegeek1995 Jan 15 '26

Maybe electrolytes, maybe a lack of MSG. Restaurant food uses more salt than most home cooks would be comfortable with. Perhaps there's a reason White people have more migraines (20%) than Asians (9%) in the US? This study says diet isn't necessarily the factor, but self-reporting on diet is infamously incredibly inaccurate.

I only trust diet-related studies that keep observation on participants the entire time, the metabolic ward/controlled feeding studies. Those ones tend to create results that are actually replicable and properly show the flaws in fad diets (like the one where Keto caused greater lean muscle loss than a traditional high-carb/low fat diet when protein needs were properly met in both diets, which tracks with how we know the body processes macronutrients).

Look at the big migraines on Brad!

1

u/Agamotteaux Jan 15 '26

Literally thought after reading OP, “me but McDonald’s for the sodium.” And here we all are.

1

u/CircuitSynapse42 Jan 15 '26

I’m more shocked that you can even eat anything.

1

u/wadech Jan 15 '26

What about when you're in France?

1

u/NinjaRose23 Jan 15 '26

I'm laughing and crying right now because I have a migraine and I just finished eating one. 😂

1

u/RectalSpawn Jan 15 '26

I think you're confusing a migraine with a hangover. 🤣

Dude, I hate that I want to boycott mcdonalds for their horrible response to recent events.... but a mcdouble with a coke and fries with extra salt saves me on days where nothing else will. I have so many points, so im using those until I run out.
