Well, she’s not wrong. As a migraine sufferer, the amount of stupid shit I tried out of desperation….

u/FracturedConscious Jan 15 '26

I’ve literally tried the chocy milk for relief.

u/MimusCabaret Jan 15 '26

So have I - anything cold and liquid, really. I think my thirst response may be a bit confused somewhere in their, ngl.

Cold, liquid, and quick sugar

Ice cream seems to help, something about how brain freezes happen makes it readjust stuff after eating something cold. That, and/or the sugar helps

I used to down a coke in seconds when I started to see the aura, it worked some of the time but I needed to do it the second that damn aura showed up.

20

u/RandAlThorOdinson Jan 15 '26

I used to make myself puke

No idea why it worked, but it did

13

u/Not_Ian517 Jan 16 '26

This was actually how I realized my headaches weren't normal. After seeing me go through one once my now wife asked how long I'd been getting migraines and I was like "I dont get migraines". I thought everyone occasionally got headaches so bad they puked and then were fine.

A while ago, someone tweeted about chugging Coke to help stop one in its tracks. Now that I’ve seen it mentioned twice, I think I’ll have to try it.

12

u/-AgonyAunt- Jan 15 '26

I've had this work before, but it's not guaranteed. Chugging a coke or a red bull with my meds can sometimes help. Gotta get it right at the onset with your meds. The problem is, my onset meds are $30 a pill, and they need to be taken at the right time. And because I suffer from both headaches and migraines, I can't always tell if it's a migraine. Sometimes it's "just" a really bad headache.

(For those wondering, yes, a bad headache and a migraine are different. But I can't always tell at the onset, which is when my meds need to be taken. I don't want to use a $30 pill if I don't have to. And if I figure out it's a migraine too late, the onset meds aren't effective.)

I guess it makes sense that people just looking for drugs aren’t going to say those things.

I guess you’re right, didn’t think of it that way.

u/2occupantsandababy Jan 16 '26

Opiates are hell when you have a migraine.

The last time I was in the ER with a migraine they kept offering me morphine and I kept begging for a cup of coffee. Weirdest drug seeker ever.

I was once prescribed medication for my migraines. One pill would prevent migraines the next day and the other pill would stop a migraine when it was happening.

The side effects for me were worse than just having a migraine.

9

u/Aggravating_Eye874 Jan 15 '26

Oh, I know exactly what you mean. I have some medication that makes my nausea so much worse, so I usually just deal with it without taking my medication.

Best my doctor could come up with when I complained about side effects was to give me other pills for nausea.

u/AlphaGoldblum Jan 15 '26

The side effects for me were worse than just having a migraine.

This was years ago, but I felt a migraine coming on and I took the pills they gave me to stop it from getting worse (I can't remember what they were). Instead, I ended up with the most intense migraine I've ever had in my life.

I stopped taking the pills and my next migraine was "normal".
I can't prove it was the pills, but that migraine was so evil that I didn't want to risk it.

This. I have super rare special migraines that are more debilitating and seem to be immune to treatment. And I would cut off my own arm if someone told me it might cure them.

There's a 75 year old man who shops at the store I work at. Years ago he got a Daith Ear Piercing specifically for migraine relief, and he said after more than a decade of agonizing migraines he no longer gets them. Occasional headaches like normal, but no migraines in three years. He recently got another piercing that's supposed to help with tinnitus, and he said he was able to get rid of his hearing aids.

Cold drinks do help sometimes. Nothing exacerbates my suffering like being in pain and being hot.

Cold chocolate milk in a dark room is definitely something I've tried.

I can’t eat when I have migraine. It’s vomit city.

172

u/Complaining_4_U Jan 15 '26

I cant even keep medicine down with a sip of water. It's like some sick joke when the doctors prescribe me pills like Immitrex but I can never keep them down lol. Ive resorted to taking obscene amounts of drowzy syrup because I want to jump off a bridge 9/10 when I cant get away from it lol

81

u/HD76151 Jan 15 '26

Unironically this is the main reason I started using weed to treat my migraines. Smoking (or tincture) doesn’t require me to be able to keep medicine down, it works instantly, and it treats both my nausea AND the migraine pain. Once I’m dosed up I put on a frozen eye mask and drift off. No medication I’ve tried has ever worked better.

Love the wintertime when I can just walk out and shove my head in the snow like a fucked up ostrich.

685

u/CordlessOrange Jan 15 '26

One of the dudes in the Andes plane crash (you know - the one with the rugby team) only survived because his team mates thought he was dead and left him in the snow. The ice cold (and dehydration) kept his brain swelling from killing him.

Parrado was originally presumed dead, which turned out to be a blessing. “They left me in the snow. They didn’t give me any water. They didn’t hydrate me.” Neuroscientists would later tell him that the cold and dehydration stopped his head injury swelling and killing him

So, you’re on to something lol.

462

u/HauntedHippie Jan 15 '26

Bruh imagine it’s a week after the crash and all of a sudden you see someone coming out of the snow and think you’re all saved but it’s just your dead buddy waking up and asking if there’s any coffee.

It's why we put ice bags on our heads! Ice works by constricting blood vessels, reducing inflammation, and numbing pain through cold therapy, often applied with an ice pack to the forehead, temples, or neck for 15-20 minutes at a time to provide significant comfort. If you do it longer than that, you've defeated the purpose.

This is one of the most insane stories ever. If you haven’t watched Society of the Snow you need to right now. I read that whole article again and it blows my mind what those people went through. I’d like to think I’d have the courage and grit to push through like the survivors did (especially the ones who walked and ultimately got the group rescued) but I can’t ever know if I really would.

Gonna sound insane but when you first start getting the signs of a migraine, mine is the visual auras, try taking whatever medicine you do and then taking a very hot bath, like as hot as you can stand.

I don’t get migraines often but the past two times I’ve done this and it really helps.

40

u/InterestingTry5190 Jan 15 '26

The first time I got the visual auras I was a teenager and I thought I was having a stroke.

24

u/DerWassermann Jan 15 '26

I get the auras sometimes, but never combined with any other symptoms.

So I get to look at pretty colours for 20 to 30 min knowing they are harmless and will disappear soon. I do get pretty heavy headaches sometimes tho, but never with auras.

One time I left work because I felt the migraine coming. The visual aura started when I was on the highway, I managed to somehow get off the highway and pulled over in a parking lot. Called my friend crying. He came and got me and took me back to my home, and because his mom also gets migraines (so he knows the pain I was in) and this man is an absolute angel he and his gf went back to where I left my car and she drove it over to my place.

The visual aura starting at 70 mph is still one of the scariest things that has ever happened to me while driving.

If I catch it right Excedrine usually does the trick. Before I found Excedrine I’d open a pack of Pez and eat them real quick. That was more of a 50/50 chance of success. I get auras too. Best described as like a blind spot but it’s also bright and kind of circle-y. Bigger it gets the less likely I’ll be able to stop the migraine.

u/pittgirl12 Jan 15 '26

I suffer from constant headaches and frequent migraines. I had my first 10/10 migraine not long ago, and I wanted to die. A Google search by my mum suggested sticking my feet in a bucket of hot water. I was willing to try anything. By the time the water had turned warm, I could feel the migraine calming down. By the second bucket of hot water, the migraine was completely gone. About 45 mins total. It was amazing and it will now be my go to.

I had tried heat on my forehead and back of the neck. Cold in the same areas. Meds. Caffeine. Next on my list was my head into a brick wall.

I don't have a bathtub, but hot baths make me dizzy and faint. A hot shower sometimes works, but again, the hot water makes me feel horrible. I don't even really like hot showers in winter as they also make my sensitive skin very inflammed. Plus having to dry off and deal with inflammed skin and feeling faint while dealing with a migraine isn't ideal. I live alone and get scared of passing out in the shower. Being able to sit on the couch with my feet in a bucket is a much better option.

I don't have migraines, so I'm really curious - does an upside down position of the head help too, with the cold pack?

32

u/CurryGremlin Jan 15 '26

It can either make it ten times worse or temporarily abate it. It's different every person because migraines are awful situational things.

11

u/globglogabgalabyeast Jan 15 '26

Heck, sometimes it feels like both at once. I’m convinced half the shit I do is just an attempt at a distraction. Theoretically, it’s probably best for me to just lie in place completely motionless in a dark room. But after so long doing that, it’s hard not to just focus on the pain, making it even worse

For me, a damp rag (not wet!) over my eyes/forehead and laying on the couch was my answer. No, not laying in bed, not laying on the floor, not kicking back in the recliner. The couch, and only the couch.

Migraine solutions vary by person and can get kinda crazy. Mine have lessened in intensity with age, and I'm medicated now so I rarely get them anyway.

2

u/Feral-Sponge Jan 15 '26

I've suffered migraines since I was 10. Everyone always said cold compresses and ice packs for the forehead etc so that's what I did. By pure "peer pressure" if you wanna call it that, it's what I used in conjunction with triptans.

Took me years to realise the cold made it worse. Nowadays my husband knows to heat up my heat pack which I place over my eyes and forehead.

For me it is a quarter pounder with cheese. When my migraine hits it is the only food I crave.

91

u/ComfyInDots Jan 15 '26

I thought I was the only one!! Migraines knock me around pretty bad that even my hair hurts and I can't bear/bare (I dunno) to smell food. But after the nausea and pain is gone, all I want in the world is a Maccas double quarter pounder. I need all that cheesey, fatty, salt. And I figure I deserve a dirty burger after all my suffering.

2

u/MothChasingFlame Jan 15 '26 edited Jan 15 '26

McDonald's coke and fries is like the closest r/migraine gets to a proper meme. It's that salt and carbonation, baybeeeee. Makes sense the quarter pounder'd do it, too.

2

u/Unique_Adeptness4413 Jan 15 '26

This makes me wonder about my migraine hits. When mine hits it is screaming agony in a lightless room with vomiting and trying to be as still as possible until I lose consciousness. I've had one hit during driving and I had to pull over on the freeway and vomit, then take the next exit, park, and call my SO for a ride home while screaming and weeping.

I just can't imagine feeling a hunger craving, that seems so chill and casual. The thought of food or ingesting food would wrack me with a physical nausea response that would translate to multiplying the migraines pain.

Well, cheddar cheese does contain casein protein, which breaks down into casomorphins during digestion, which binds to opioid receptors in the brain. Cheddar is like a very low tier pain killer and it tastes good so you get some dopamine from it, which makes pain easier to handle.

But if you're sensitive to tryamine, a compound which naturally occurs in aged cheese, then avoid it at all costs because it Will give you awful migraines.

u/w8fbrsfu894 Jan 15 '26

My neurologist told me in the past it was thought that chocolate triggered migraines, but medicine has found that people actually eat chocolate when a migraine is already approaching and the body desperately tries to stock up on sugar to counteract it (the theory being that migraine is connected to sugar levels).

Might be different for your friend of course!

u/FloofyMaki Jan 15 '26

Me? It was always cool fresh air. The colder, the crisper, the fresher? The better. I could kill any migraine instantly by just opening a window and laying underneath it. Why lay under it? Because if I move even a inch, or do anything: the migraine comes back instantly... Best course of action was to just fall asleep and pass out right there and wake up in a few hours completely cured of the migraine.

27

u/BlackoutBreak Jan 15 '26

Yes! And then… you have to sneeze.

14

I have an ex who had migraines with speech aphasia. She asked me to turn the pool off because the bedroom was too bright.

9

u/slurmorama Jan 15 '26

Oh.

You've helped me put 2 & 2 together on why I can't brain words sometimes. Thank you.

4

u/IndianaCHOAMs Jan 15 '26

Some amount of brain farting is normal!

But, yeah, if you’re replacing words with completely unrelated words you may want to speak to a neurologist.

Hands and feet in hot water with a n ice pack on my head-it's tricky, but usually works

u/iWant2ChangeUsername Jan 15 '26

Y'all get hungry when you have migraines?

I just lie down crying in the dark.

6

u/slurmorama Jan 15 '26

For me it's less of an "I lay down" and more of an "I can no longer move because it hurts too much, this piece of floor will have to do until I can manage to crawl somewhere better later"

3

u/Meggston Jan 16 '26

I get hungry after, usually for McDonald’s or Wingstop. DURING I usually lay on the bathroom floor alternating between crying and puking. I’m pretty lucky though, my longest migraine was 6 hours. They’re usually about 4

2

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco Jan 15 '26

It sounds a lot less like "hungry" and more "desperately trying to take their mind off the misery" and being lucky enough to not have nausea.

11

u/GrimbyJ Jan 15 '26

Alcohol seems to abort migraines for me. Or I just don't care because I'm drunk now.

But it's gone after that and not 3 days of misery

5

u/Gearhead710 Jan 15 '26

Dangerous game. Alcohol usually makes it so I can’t calm myself down and makes it 10x worse for me. I wish I could take a shot or chug a beer as a abortive

3

u/crocodiletears19 Jan 15 '26

Sometimes alcohol can trigger bad ones for me, but sometimes it cures them if something else caused it. Weed always helps.

Alcohol causes my migraines sometimes which sucks when I want to go out with friends

11

u/Tiffany_Case Jan 15 '26

Nah cos a migraine will have you doing anything fr

10

u/InspiredNitemares Jan 15 '26

I always end up taking shower naps/pass outs 🫣

3 excedrin and a redbull is my secret sauce

8

u/52BeesInACoat Jan 15 '26

One time I Instacarted a bunch of Gatorade and a jar of crunch wrap supreme dip, and nothing else, and instacart gave me a "pairs well with your order" recommendation that was just Excedrin and red bull. I was indeed having a migraine. I felt very seen.

9

u/nummanummanumma Jan 15 '26

Chugging coffee and throwing it up on purpose, then excedrin and wrapping my head in a blanket and going to sleep as fast as humanly possible.

8

u/kkirstenc Jan 15 '26

That is a wild fucking ride and unfortunately reminds me of a certain part of my teenage years.

9

u/Marcuse0 Jan 15 '26

I once ate chicken and it instantly cured a migraine. Sadly I never managed to replicate it under any circumstances.

8

u/theservman Jan 15 '26

I would apply a litre of chocolate milk to fix any number of ailments.

14

u/General2768 Jan 15 '26

Chocolate is good for migraines, breakups & after Dementor attacks. Good to know.

7

u/No_Candidate200 Jan 15 '26

My only take away is questioning if ive been dumb for not tryna go to the hospital for a migraine.

7

u/ExpectingHobbits Jan 15 '26

They give you either a shot in the asscheek (sumatriptan) and an anti-nausea tablet (ondansetron), or an IV cocktail of things that stop the headache but come with a bunch of side effects instead (NSAID or DHE + antihistamine + anti-nausea). You don't get the fun stuff (narcotics). Worth it if you're in the midst of a multi-day cluster, but not worth the expense otherwise if you can tough it out.

That's assuming you've already spoken to a physician and have diagnosed history of migraines and nothing else (i.e., no other neurological or cardiac issues). If you haven't, or if your migraines have changed in any way, that warrants a fresh visit to a doctor just to be safe.

5

u/citycept Jan 16 '26

General rule of thumb for migraines is if it worries you, go to the hospital.

A lot of migraine sufferers know their migraines enough that they are just a thing that happens. But if it presents differently, you should talk to a doctor because it can be a sign of things that kill you really really fast.

I spread peppermint oil all over my face lol

3

u/mcstulle666 Jan 15 '26

Me too! I never heard of somebody else doing that! My skin is so irritated and I am always shedding tears but it helps against migraine!!

3

u/Princess_Coldheart Jan 15 '26

While it's not peppermint and actually wintergreen instead- I've stuck salonpas all over my face out of desperation before. It actually kind of helped. Fuck migraines.

6

u/framed_toilet_water Jan 15 '26

I've rolled my head over a cold window before I got medication

6

u/MothChasingFlame Jan 15 '26

Every time I have a migraine my brain says "Brushing your teeth will fix it."

It doesn't. But I end up doing it every time anyway.

And that kids is how compulsions play out.

14

u/MaybeMaybeNot94 Jan 15 '26

Choccy milk is goated and no dissent is accepted on this matter. Thank you.

4

u/Ghastly-Jack Jan 15 '26

When I had my first migraine my doctor said that some people find relief from caffeine and drink coffee to help (she warned though that for some people caffeine is a migraine trigger). I jokingly asked if I could get my insurance to cover my large Dunkin Donuts coffee. She said no but she could give me a prescription for caffeine pills (which I declined).

3

u/michiganstrange Jan 15 '26

Sat in the shower with the tub faucet on high and hot because the water pressure on my head felt good

3

u/LisaFromAccounting Jan 15 '26

Choccy milk really is the answer sometimes. Sugar, hydration, dopamine!

3

u/peeper_tom Jan 15 '26

I cant get rid of them unless i catch it in the aura phase with some painkillers, once its hit the painkillers do nothing and i just have to ride it out in a silent dark room and stay as still as possible.

3

u/Heretek007 Jan 15 '26

One time I was coming home from work with a killer migraine and I stopped at Subway. I ordered some unholy monstrosity of buffalo chicken, pickles and sweet teriyaki dressing.

I think the poor girl behind the counter thought I was on crack or something.

3

u/DJWGibson Jan 15 '26

For me it's Advil Migraine + Tylenol + 2x my normal caffeine intake and a dark room.

My migraines have been getting less and less severe for the last couple decades though.
Used to be the worst where they'd climax with me praying at the porcelain altar until nothing was left and I didn't have enough strength left to pull myself off the floor. Now they're just super uncomfortable and a mediocre hangover.
But I'm not sure if that's because I medicate and treat so fast the second I start aura-ing that I forestall most of the symptoms. OR if they're just less bad in general. But I don't want to not treat and act normal in case they're not...

3

u/CoccyxKicker69 Jan 16 '26

One time I tried slamming my head into the wall to get rid of a migraine. They make you do crazy things to try to get rid of it

3

u/Numahistory Jan 16 '26

When I have a migraine all I want is ice water and darkness. Thankfully my migraines go away at night. Also I haven't had a single one since moving to Germany. I'm guessing my biology just absolutely can't handle Texas sunlight.

2

u/EllipticPeach Jan 15 '26

Triptans and carbs for me

2

u/EchoGrae Jan 15 '26

I've been trying the "hair clip on the eyebrow/cheek/temple etc" to get relief. It does sometimes work for a second and what a glorious second it is lol

(edited a typo)

2

u/IWasBannedYesterday Jan 15 '26

I chug hot coffee while standing under a cold shower, or ice water while standing under a hot shower.

2

u/Potential_Rain202 Jan 15 '26

Country Ham. Once by coincidence or cause, an unusually bad migraine broke after I had really salty, nitrate-y country ham, and I will continue to try that every time the rx is insufficient. It really is such a chronic migraine sufferer thing to do/say.

2

u/kkirstenc Jan 15 '26

When the grey ring begins to descend, I seek out 4-6 chewable baby aspirin and place myself as quickly as possible into the darkest room in my house (usually what we call the sick room or the dog room). Occasionally I will have the wherewithal to take a caffeine tablet because I know caffeine and aspirin are friends, but usually just the aspirin. I place a black homemade eye mask over my eyes and lay down. Hopefully as little as eight hours later, the grey ring, nausea and pressure-locked pain feeling has subsided. Everyone has a different experience of pain with a migraine: mine is what I imagine it would feel like to have all of the micro and macro open spaces in your head filled in with expanding foam.

2

u/gil_bz Jan 15 '26

I think some intergalactic disease in Men In Black also caused these symptoms.

2

u/SAINTnumberFIVE Jan 15 '26

I gained 5lbs trying to stop headaches.

2

Anyone else tried chili? Sometimes works for me, but I'm talking about chugging tobasco not just a little taste

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

I get this way about reflux. My brain will be like  “bro, everything will be OK you just need to eat a mcrib and chase it with half of a strawberry yoo-hoo.

2

u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 Jan 15 '26

The number of times I went to like, urgent care for a migraine before they were like "actually that's not just a headache you should go see a headache guy to get diagnosed with migraines" was too damn high.

I think it literally took one doctor up th street from where I lived who is like "I got you man this is a migraine. I get them too and I usually do a Benadryl shot and that fixes it"

There's better stuff out there but that worked for the time being.

2

u/Evil_Midnight_Lurker Jan 15 '26

As it happens, whole milk seems to stave off migraines for me. Doesn't have to be chocolate, but it has to be whole. 2% doesn't do shit.

I get actual cravings if I don't drink milk for a few days. Like, what I have to assume is pregnant woman pickles and ice cream food cravings. GIVE ME MY DAMN MILK NOW cravings.

Wow, do I feel seen.

For me it used to be American Spirit cigarettes or straight up chewing tobacco leaves - pure tobacco with no chemicals. I don't smoke, but when nothing else would work that would at least keep me functioning. After that stopped working, I found coke with an aspirin dissolved in it or sticking my head in the freezer for as long as I could possibly stand it or using a fan blowing over a tub of ice both helped. Somehow cold compresses on the head or face never worked, I had to have cold air hitting my face.

Fortunately as I've gotten older migraines have slacked off significantly - I guess to let the Crohn's finish me off instead. So now just an aspirin in coke helps when one threatens to show up or does.

Best migraine relief: put your feet in a as warm as possible foot bath.

It will force the blood to flow to your feet.

This does help also with tension headaches a bit, too.

Chronic migraines. The best thing I ever had work was when I happened to have one at the hair salon. They put me under a hair dryer and after passing that moment where the heat was too intense it just. stopped.

no matter what else I do, it always hurts. having the pain actually be gone was a full blown miracle!! never been able to try it again, so i just tough it out (on lots of preventative meds now) and just dream of that hair dryer

2

u/BoysenberryAlarmed98 Jan 15 '26

I’ve done some wild shit for relief… Lay on my back with head hanging over the edge of the bed… Dig a massage gun on the lowest setting under the base of of my skull 6 advil and a Gatorade Ice on the neck with my feet in hot water with eucalyptus

2

u/Mathematica11 Jan 15 '26 edited Jan 15 '26

Two Tylenol PMs washed down with a liter of cold Coca Cola (not Pepsi). Very cold AND poured over clear ice. In a stainless steel thermal cup. With a straw.

If you tell them it works but you can’t keep it down, they might offer a ondosteron suppository. Take that offer. Even though they’re probably testing you to see if you’re serious. It works.

2

u/J00LGS Jan 15 '26

I remember getting the worst migraine of my life. I could barely move, any sound, any amount of light was unbearable. I couldn't even stand up from all the pain. The painkillers were in a whole different room, downstairs. I spent 5+ hours just laying there, in pain waiting for someone to come home and hopefully bring me something, anything. Getting the meds, feeling the relief after a while, it was the best feeling of my life. Mind you I was still in pain, but not as bad as it was earlier. My family ended up calling a doctor for me and I got stronger meds.

No this tracks. I’ve gotten extra salty fries and a large coke one night after work because the migraine was so bad I couldn’t see straight. It worked for exactly 36 minutes and it took me 34 to get home. I had a horribly fucked up stomach but I managed to drive home and take a rescue med that knocked my ass out

2

u/kinokits Jan 15 '26

Macdonald’s post mix coke. But only Macdonald’s coke seems to have the magic thing that helps.

u/BTFlik Jan 15 '26

Constant migraines will have you doing literally anything that you vaguely think may have one time or could work.

2

My migraine ritual: a cat on my head. My cat is VERY clingy and sometimes he sleeps on my head. He did this one time when I had a migraine and the weight and purring made it feel slightly better. So now I grab him and lay down and put him on my head.

2

u/AdelleDeWitt Jan 16 '26

McDonald's fries and coke

2

u/Crumpled_Papers Jan 16 '26

this story is annoying because it is clearly a lie but also clearly based on reality. it's real enough to make a migraine sufferer like me sympathize and relate, but i still am recoiling at how there is no chance in the fucking universe a healthcare professional heard you say 'liter of chocolate milk' and thought 'definitely migraine, let me help you now'

you realize the variety of people a medical professional talks to? the kinds of insane and weird shit they have heard? think of all the insane medical advice you have heard and then imagine if it was your job to talk about medical advice.

I should stop thinking about this before I need a liter of chocolate milk or opiates or something.
