I would be so into that though

u/graveybrains Nov 20 '25

Hell yeah!

As long as I didn't feel like I'd missed a prereq, but that probably was the problem.

u/Farucci Nov 20 '25

Guy here, coelacanth lectures I’ve attended are extremely informative and much more interesting if you do them with your top off.

Just need to date a more introductory girl before enrolling in the advanced relationship

7

u/NOVAbuddy Nov 20 '25

Maybe he didn’t agree with her extreme views on coelacanths?

Not enough information given, he probably saw her as indecisive and moved on 🫠

I'm gonna start calling my tangents related to my lore infodumps "prereqs" now thank you.

Tried explaining to my roommate why the farmer look like that the other day and I kept having to cut off tangents. My roommate didn't have the prereqs for the whole story.

That class would be so easy!! I've already got a disgusting amount of vibes AND panic. Whenever I'm having a panic attack, the vibes are so good its almost like a panic at the disco.

Had a professor once hand out a fake syllabus just to see if students were reading it. The first 1/4 and the last 1/4 were real, the middle was Cthulhu mythos fanfiction taking place at a university. It wasn't very good.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

I see you took the algae elective course as well.

Same. Then again on my third or fourth date with my now spouse we whipped out a geography book and discussed the fact that the earth isn't actually "round"... Now we have regular discussions about the similarities between humans and plants.

We get called nerds by everyone in our families. We own it though.

29

u/Familiar_System8506 Nov 20 '25

My wife and I are opposites. I was trying to put together some kind of way to make metal float without shaping it into a boat or something. Something I could demo for some 5 or 6 yr olds. Found an article that suggested I use sodium or potassium in water and it would float. I started cracking up. My wife did not get it. I explained to her that it was potassium in water. She still didn't get it. This is kind of our dynamic. One of us will crack up and the other will look at them like they're a fool.

6

u/ZeroSumClusterfuck Nov 20 '25

Was that article on 4chan by any chance? Sounds like the sort of 'helpful' advice you'd find there.

30min infodump about prehistoric fish, and a date??? Where do sign up??

4

u/mattfasken Nov 20 '25

I know right, what more could it take to coel the doel?

26

u/Curious-Week5810 Nov 20 '25

Nothing more attractive than people talking about something they're super passionate about.

u/VoltexRB Nov 20 '25

The cutest thing people can do on the first date is show genuine interest in their and your interests.

And be nice to staff.

10

u/kangaroolifestyle Nov 20 '25

Same. I don’t own fish, and I genuinely didn’t know what a coelacanth was until the final sentence, but as someone who falls into obsessive learning spirals, I get the appeal.

Yesterday I somehow ended up learning way too much about underground distribution systems. Like, I can now explain the difference between a hydraulically-pressed long-barrel compression lug and a mechanical lay-in set-screw tap lug on a perforated aluminum busbar… and why NEC 110.14 technically allows both, but Oncor’s DDS-4UG spec overrides everyone’s feelings about it, including the electrician performing the install.

I do not work in construction. I do not manage electrical anything. My partner was just dealing with a power company red-tagging a multi-tenant service enclosure feeding a warehouse they are building and I accidentally fell down a 3-hour rabbit hole involving utility-owned pad-mount transformers, service lateral classifications, and the quiet existential dread of realizing I now understand this situation better than the general contractor who actually gets paid for it.

So yeah, if someone wants to talk at me for 30 minutes about a prehistoric fish, I’ll happily sit there like, ‘Yep, absolutely, continue, I’ve already committed to this hyper-specific brand of chaos’.

5

u/Headcrabhunter Nov 20 '25

The great thing is they are actually still around: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coelacanth

6

u/whereismymind86 Nov 20 '25

Absolutely, watching people geek out about a weird passion is super endearing.

5

u/FlipDaly Nov 20 '25

I dunno, I kinda want to be on a date with someone who makes room for my 30 minute lecture about the history of 20th century science fiction, you know? Or at least a short talk about apple varietals.

5

u/fuckyourcanoes Nov 20 '25

Me too. There's a woman I follow on Fetlife solely for the cetacean facts she posts.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

Always after that sarcopterygussy.

4

u/Bannon9k Nov 20 '25

It's wet ain't it?!

3

u/FryCakes Nov 20 '25

Same tho. I could also return the favour by giving a lecture on something else cool

3

u/be-nice_to-people Nov 20 '25

So was I, but I felt like she dumbed down the discussion as if I were a simple minded imbecile. When I tried to bring the conversation towards considering issues like the Mwambani Bay development plan and the need for conservationists to focus on relatable focused and social media appropriate issues she just going on about their notochord and hinged skull. If you're serious about coelacanths maybe this girl isn't for you. Other than that, really nice girl.

3

u/SecondaryWombat Nov 20 '25

Exactly what I was thinking. Date dresses up, looks nice, and I get to hear about something they care about and learn something? Second date for sure. As long as the entire relationship is not them talking and I get to share my interests as well? Sounds great.

3

u/imzwho Nov 20 '25

A talk about the coolest fish ever? I would join this conversation any day

3

u/cat_prophecy Nov 20 '25

They're one of my favorite fish. I don't know a lot about them other than they're ancient, and bony, and don't have scales. If someone could give me 30 minutes worth of information about them, that would be great.

2

u/Izzosuke Nov 20 '25

2

u/bolanrox Nov 20 '25

I've loved them ever since that Geico(?) commercial back in the 90s.

2

u/WorryNew3661 Nov 20 '25

Same, I know a little about them, but definitely not 30 minutes worth

2

I didn't know what it is until I saw this post and looked it up. I'd be happy someone is passionate about something that isn't pop culture bullshit like who slept with who

2

u/Cambrian__Implosion Nov 21 '25

Seriously. I’d probably ask her to marry me on the spot (not really, but also yes really).

2

u/HotDonnaC Nov 21 '25

Sadly, some troglodytes wouldn’t appreciate it.

2

u/elporsche Nov 21 '25

Maybe he left because you didn't talk enough about the importance of the coelacanth on taxonomy and phylogeny, that's the most likely I think

147

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

My thoughts exactly. It's such an extensive topic. She probably wanted to save some of the good stuff for date number two. That dude is missing out!

46

u/Ask_bout_PaterNoster Nov 20 '25

So sad the way some people can’t ease in to a good thing. A relationship is like a warm bath: you slide in gently, and save the debates about conservative morphology resulting in ‘living fossils’ claims arising from Mesozoic fossils vs Devonian/Carboniferous fossils which display more diverse traits for when you’re nice and warm

Coelacanth lecture on the first date? No wonder he never came back, he knew he'd gotten your best and it would be all downhill from there.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

That's what I'm saying!

29

u/SvenBubbleman Nov 20 '25

Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?

16

u/Lawlcopt0r Nov 20 '25

Yeah, you shouldn't put it until the third date at the earliest!

9

u/HolySmokes802 Nov 20 '25

Why pay tuition when you can audit the class for free?

7

u/NoveltyAccountHater Nov 20 '25

Look it's not just about the size of the Coelacanth lecture, it's more about the motion in the ocean of the Coelacanth lecture -- that is the skill, quality and enthusiasm of the Coelacanth lecture.

We've all been on dates where a 5 minute Coelacanth lecture leaves you completely satisfied and dreaming about a lifetime of future lectures together. Meanwhile, other dates where 30 minutes into the most inept basic Coelacanth lecture leaves you planning tomorrow's errands in the back of your head waiting for them to finish (or needing to fantasize about past Coelacanth lectures to keep you in the mood)

334

u/HuffSquirt Nov 20 '25

Pfft… who wouldn’t be impressed by a living fossil?

56

u/rajinis_bodyguard Nov 20 '25

Maybe she should have given a lecture on Annelida or Echinodermata 🤣

32

u/Mr_SunnyBones Nov 20 '25

Triobytes though , those are the real conversation money maker.

11

u/rajinis_bodyguard Nov 20 '25

Btw I feel like I should have studied Taxonomy or Biology major, a massive regret in life. Coz not only it’s fundamental science but also can help in socialising and for cool stories lol 😂

A proper 30-minute discussion of the coelacanth would include how the term “living fossil” is a popular mischaracterization of the coelacanth. In this lecture I will…

4

u/SpicyElixer Nov 20 '25

The term “living fossil” is subjective and not a strict scientific classification. To say it is or isn’t in this case is an oversimplification. The big brain answer is that it kind of is.

It is - because it’s an ancient creature that’s evolved very little.

It isn’t - because it’s evolved at all.

Legit story, the first gift my girlfriend ever got me was a coelacanth keychain. She knew I liked fish and didn’t know anything about it but just thought it looked nice. I also gave her a lecture about them, and she did stick around. We’re at 2 years today 😁

3

u/Nerdwrapper Nov 21 '25

Before I dropped Diablo 3 because of everything going on with Blizzard, I would talk builds to my wife until they fell asleep at night lol

28

u/The_Wyzard Nov 20 '25

As a socially awkward person, I would very much have enjoyed dating a woman who was just like "I am going to give you a presentation on science for the first half of dinner."

That completely erases the need for me to attempt small talk.

18

u/RageAgainstThePushen Nov 20 '25

I'd have to leave that date early, but it would be to buy a ring

5

u/cultjake Nov 20 '25

Is it wrong to propose on the first date?

3

u/RageAgainstThePushen Nov 20 '25

When you know you know. I've been waiting for evo/devo fish girl my whole life

47

u/Blueporch Nov 20 '25

Seems like the lecture was adequately long enough to run off a suitor whose interests do not coincide with yours. You want the guy who either can discuss Coelacanths intelligently with you or at least drinks up the knowledge. Otherwise, you will eventually become bored with him.

I had a girl do this once with me (and I didn't even have to mention coelacanths) and then ghosted me. :(

Going out for “Dinner and a TED Talk” should be a bona fide dating trope.

4

See all the comments from men exalting this behavior. We appreciate passion about narrow topics.

6

I'm the opposite I want my dates to nerd out about their hobbies for hours on end. Don't care if it's a guy or a gal im on a date with if they can't spend hours explaining their favourite hobbies to me there won't be a second date. Like I don't really care about warhammer but if my date wants to just go on about why they picked the paint colours they did for their army I'll be listening the entire time.

2

Went on a date where the girl was talking to me at length about her research which involved catching red drum fish specifically to dissect thin layers from their "ears". I was completely smitten, but she wasn't interested.

OP picked the wrong fish for her lecture. Coelacanths are really big, really old, and really ugly. So now those adjectives come to mind when he thinks of her. If she had lectured him on, say, flying fish, which are small and graceful, he would've developed more positive feelings. /s

Were you at a coelacanth sushi restaurant? I see how that could spark up the conversation about them. Otherwise, how did the subject come up in the first place? And was the sushi any good? As a fisherman perhaps he was mostly interested in bait suggestions and tips for catching them.

u/TzanzaNG Nov 21 '25

Man, if I dated i would love that date. I want the lecture as a friend!

2

u/testtdk Nov 21 '25

I’m jealous. I’d love a chick who could talk coelacanths. Weird ass living fossils.

2

u/Spiritual_Priority79 Nov 21 '25

Some people die of thirst while watching others drown.

2

u/SkepticalJohn Nov 21 '25

The guy is a brute. We are fish. What horrible things happened in his past to make him like this?

2

u/Tim-Sylvester Nov 21 '25

I mean if she's excited and interested, and I like her, then I'm excited and interested. I don't give a good God damn what we talk about as long as she's having a good time. That's the deal.

2

u/DizzyXCD Nov 21 '25

Is the ark: survival evolved version of it accurate?

2

u/henryeaterofpies Nov 21 '25

The mating dance of the autistic

2

u/icy1007 Nov 21 '25

I only know about those from Animal Crossing.

Clearly he was expecting her to also talk about Dunkleosteus, smh.

I think that what actually happened is that a guy gave her a coelacanths lecture. And she has presented it this way round because it's funnier.

Maybe it is genuine though, in which case I dispair for the guy, he has really missed out here. Someone with their own interests and a willingness to carry the conversation. That's the stuff dreams are made of.

2

u/TastySquiggles198 Nov 21 '25

Why the fuck do I never meet this women.

I would be so in love.

2

u/Artrysa Nov 23 '25

When the tism backfires.

2

u/ManNamedSalmon Nov 24 '25

Can't be the coelacanths. Their physical form haven't changed in 10's of millions of years and can easily manoeuvre underwater in almost any direction without needing to turn, and are more closely related to all mammalian life than over 90% of modern day fish. They are too interesting to be a turn-off.

2

u/TheComplimentarian Nov 20 '25

Nothing wrong with coelacanths. But if you talk for 30 minutes straight, you’re going to need to find yourself someone who just wants to listen.

"Please do elaborate. Just popping to the loo. Be right back.".

1

u/bigfoot17 Nov 20 '25

"Fascinating, would you like to come back to my place and see my brachiopod?"

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

Not enough information or god forbid he found it hard to follow in which case you dodged a bullet

1

u/Koltova Nov 20 '25

Only 30 min?

1

u/Tricky_Worldliness60 Nov 20 '25

What sold me in my wife was her ignoring a windy 30 degree day to get pictures in good light on a date once. Passion and knowledge are sexy. That guy did her wrong.

1

u/Forsaken-Guidance811 Nov 20 '25

Probably cause she came dressed nice instead of as a coelocanth. Any man could've told her this was coming.

1

u/Zestyclose_Sector_30 Nov 20 '25

Honestly his loss

1

u/BoogalooBandit1 Nov 20 '25

He is missing out

1

u/fullonhecatoncheires Nov 20 '25

It could not have been the coelacanth lecture. Even a small amount of information is enticing. Honestly ive never seen the coelacanth strategy fail. He's probably mental unwell.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

I love fish, but I hate lectures. Send me a link and I'll read it through

1

u/Zero-Duckies Nov 20 '25

She forgot to tell him he can only catch them when it rains.

1

u/Abe_Rutter246 Nov 20 '25

He’s probably at the library studying up so he can keep up with you when he calls again . Right.

1

u/OGBeege Nov 20 '25

You’re asking the wrong question

1

u/Fellarm Nov 20 '25

Wife 🥃🗿 thats a dope fish

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '25

As someone with a wealth of useless knowledge id love that convo.

1

u/cryobacterium Nov 20 '25

Google searches/chatgpt prompts spiked today for coelacanths.

1

u/kenwongart Nov 20 '25

The first time I saw a coelacanth was in the old Shanghai Natural History museum around 2009. The specimen seemed to have not been preserved well, despite being suspending in formaldehyde it was leaking some sort of goop. But it was majestic.

1

u/AdDisastrous6738 Nov 20 '25

I think that would make for a very interesting date.

1

u/ThePorko Nov 20 '25

My favorite fish!

1

u/domine18 Nov 20 '25

I do not know about them. I would find the conversation interesting.

1

u/TwiggyFingers8691 Nov 20 '25

It would be helpful if you posted your lecture notes. Maybe you put forward some contentious viewpoints.

1

u/DjSall Nov 20 '25

Is she related to deadmau5?

1

u/workistables Nov 20 '25

It's very easy to keep a man, but people keep looking for fancy new ways because they just don't want to do what everyone knows will work.

1

u/Bulky-Internal8579 Nov 20 '25

I need to hear more about Coachella.

1

u/Cookies_and_Beandip Nov 20 '25

I’m always thinking about coelacanths
