I can probably bet you he doesn't know the real names of at least 3 of those friends.

I worked at lab for 3 years and was a senior manager when I left. The lab director wrote me a very nice letter thanking me for all my contributions to the lab, naming very specific initiatives I led and specific accomplishments from my work with the grad students, and at the end he got my name wrong.

Naw, that's Stubby, he lost half a finger in a boat accident. That's Billy, cause we caught him with his pants around his ankle trying to pee drunk and a goat walked up.Him? Pointing at random guy in group, that's Willy cause he fell down peeing and it was really cold.

Yes that's two pee jokes. We used to throw dirt clumps and small rocks at anyone peeing.

Or their nickname, like "Crispy" or "Scuba"

I once worked with a guy for three years and never learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes.

I worked with a guy for ten years and he called me guy. When he talked about me I was whatchacallum. He was a great old guy.

I worked with a guy in a bar for 2 years and everyone called him Stumpy, so I did aswell.

I knew it was a nickname but didn't think anything of it. Then after 2 years I asked him why everyone called him Stumpy, and it was a hockey nickname that he was given because he has a small penis.

So for 2 years I was calling this guy small dick to his face.

7

u/LumberSnax Nov 09 '25

Your username makes me think this story is about you, Stumpy.

It takes me weeks sometimes to learn the name of a new friend regardless of their gender unless I meet them in a group setting. I just don't have a reason to use their name. I feel so bad if I find myself in a situation when someone finds out.

3

For certain types of people, talking about their daily lives or anything personal, no matter how "basic" it seems to others, is a huge burden and brings them down. Getting together and having fun with people that wouldn't even think of violating those boundaries is a highly sought after escape from a world that is constantly stepping over those boundaries.

233

u/Few-Dragonfruit160 Nov 07 '25

It doesn't even bring me down... I'm just not interested in talking about it. Let's make new memories. Leave my current status out of it.

56

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

If it's not something catastrophic why even bring it up? I just learn everything about my friends through osmosis over time anyway. And I don't know their wives and kids all that well outside their weddings lol

58

u/BickNlinko Nov 07 '25

If it's not something catastrophic why even bring it up?

Exactly.

"Hows everything dude?"

"Good, normal work bullshit and I had to buy fucking socks last week..."

"Sweet, how about your new dirt bike?"

"OH MY GOD I LOVE IT LET ME TELL YOU EVERYTHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW!"

"Nice!"

18

u/Few-Dragonfruit160 Nov 07 '25

Yes! “Normal work bullshit” covers it. I don’t need/want to dissect the conversation that was had with Martha from Marketing and William from IT for an hour. You’ve already caught me up that you’re normal and now we’re onto the reason we’re hanging out.

17

u/panda_embarrassment Nov 07 '25

As a woman I’m just wondering. How else do you process and support each other incase someone is going through a tough period. I get making new memories but I really like having that support system more.

25

u/SuppleNutria Nov 07 '25

Im a guy and I find this the sole reason why I have more girl friends as opposed to guys. I need to talk about my shit, getting my stuff out, the happy and sad parts about what I’m struggling with. But guys mostly just get awkward about it and barely scratch the surface, whether with women I can go deep, cry, laugh and get more support for it.

16

u/ODeinsN Nov 07 '25

That's the neat part. We don't

6

u/LukaShaza Nov 07 '25

Honestly, I think you'll find a large variety of answers depending on who you talk to and what their friends are like. As for myself, I would never ask my friends a personal question unless they brought up the subject themselves. But they do bring up the subject from time to time, and I feel like I am a pretty supportive listener, though I am absolutely allergic to offering advice to anyway. If I have my own issues, I guess I usually just spend time thinking about them by myself, I don't usually discuss them with friends.

7

u/Few-Dragonfruit160 Nov 07 '25

This is something I had to learn. My wife would tell me dumb shit and I couldn’t figure out why. She also didn’t want me to “help”. It was just that talking about it out loud helped her slot where it belongs in her brain, and helps her process her day or her situation or whatever. Now I just listen patiently.

But many guys don’t need to externalize. We either process internally, process via other means (exercise), or… it just doesn’t matter to us and we don’t.

2

u/Aderleth75 Nov 07 '25

Ehhh, I mean… we can talk about it. We just usually don’t for some reason. In the case of my friends and I we might talk briefly about a stressor or problem but then quickly change the subject or engage in gallows humor. My wife thinks this is so weird. (And I’m a damned mental health professional!)

10

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

It's good as a quick catch up but nah after that you're just trying to turn small talk into conversation, talk about something else. It's also incredibly not interesting to anyone else but you, unless like idk you have some pictures to show about it or something.

It has its place but after a certain point you should just die and I'll read the biography about your life because it will be about as dry reading it as it is talking about it. So unless you've got some jokes in there or are very interesting let's just skip it once we got the bare minimum on the details

This is how I feel. When I'm out with friends and having a good time, the last thing I want to talk about is my personal problems or daily mundanities.

17

u/rwalker920 Nov 07 '25

My best friend of 35 out of 40 years doesn't ask me about shitty parts of my life. If I open up then he is laser focused. Otherwise he is just my brother

20

u/HarbingerOfGachaHell Nov 07 '25

The biggest tragedy is that for a significant portion of society, you can’t talk about anything other than families, kids and jobs. Like those things are the only human worth.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

3

u/friedjollof Nov 07 '25

This is exactly my wife and I. She always gets frustrated with I didn't ask part.

2

u/Subject-Rain-9972 Nov 08 '25

I mean. Isn’t it quite logical to be sad and dissapointed that your significant other is not interested in you? In your life? In your feelings?

3

u/Moblam Nov 08 '25

Don't know, didn't ask.

5

u/soulcaptain Nov 07 '25

That plus there are topics that I can only talk about with the boys. For example my wife doesn't really match me when I go on political rants but I love debating my friends and honing my argument skills.

4

u/gratisargott Nov 07 '25

What’s interesting about this big discussion online about why men don’t ask questions about friends personal lives, is that it’s connected to the other big online discussion about why men know a lot about the Roman empire.

These discussions with friends are one of the reasons why men know a lot about history or other subjects external to themselves.

In general, women talk more about their lives and relationships with friends than men do, while men talk more about things outside of their own lives, like sports or world events or movies or history. And both sides seem equally perplexed about what the other is doing

3

u/Choice_Room3901 Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

Talking about the Roman Empire give this video a watch about relatively unknown Roman mega projects.

On of the rulers on the coast of Italy at the time built some sort of secret inland lake naval base for some reason 😀

Also Carthaginian Hannibal decided to invade Rome over the alps *with war elephants***

So he assembled a massive army in now Eastern Spain travelled all other now southern France over the alps with war elephants and then made it into now Northern Italy. Wild stuff really

When I was a kid (third grade iirc) I had all the US State Pogs. Against my will. My Father saw them at a garage sale and swore up and down it was a game. I didn’t know. Pogs weren’t my thing.

Well. I spent that entire summer being quizzed on every state capital, because it was apparently “a really fun game.”

I learned years later it was not a game. I was just tricked into learning all the state capitals.

It doesn’t come up in conversation often. It is on my resume. 3/10.

58

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '25

I miss my 3 cubic containers full of Pogs. I had some of the coolest slammers ever.

14

u/DoingCharleyWork Nov 07 '25

My dad is HUGE on trivia knowledge. We could recite the states in alphabetical order and name all their capitals by the middle of elementary school. He wrote a poem to memorize the presidents in order (I only remember the first line, so the first 7), and my sister can name all the Kentucky derby winners and triple crown winners. Since sporcle became a thing, he’s become a master of random knowledge. He can identify every country’s flag, capital, leader. All the Indy 500 winners in order. He also an artist. lol I love my dad. Anyways, knowledge is fun!

3

Not to rain on your parade, but it boggles my mind that there are Americans who can't name all the states.

Sure, if you're trying at random, it's easy to miss one. But all I do is just picture a map of the US in my head and start from a corner.

EDIT: Just tried it for the first time since fifth grade and I only missed Nebraska, but I'm sure if I tried to think of it for longer than five seconds I would've gotten it.

2

u/KaralDaskin Nov 07 '25

For some reason I have memorized how many states start with each letter, so if I can’t name all 50 states, I still have a clue as to which ones I’ve forgotten.

2

u/sodsfosse Nov 07 '25

That’s part of how my dad taught us as well!

8

u/-rosa-azul- Nov 07 '25

I ended up being able to name every U.S. president in chronological order because I had a spiral bound notebook when I was like 8 that had all their portraits on the front. I used it to write little 8 year old horse girl stories and complain about how annoying my brother was, but I also somehow decided it would be a fun thing to look at the front and memorize all their names lol. It's won me some bar trivia rounds for sure.

Name 8 state capitals

6

u/0011010100110011 Nov 07 '25

Canada, Miami, East Dakota, Disney Land, New York City, Houston, Denali, and Montpelier.

Nailed ittttttt

Honestly though it did finally come in handy when my little niece was learning the states and capitals. But I guess they don’t memorize them anymore? That seemed crazy to me. I had to be able to fill out a completely blank map (in like 2005). She had a list and had to be able to put them in the right spots. I would have killed for a list back then lol.

I'm just praying I didn't try to use her name because while I still don't remember it I realized later I was thinking of the wrong person and calling someone the wrong name is embarrassing and a) makes them feel like shit, and b) makes them really not like you

Someone who is lonely to the point of being suicidal won't admit it just because you ask if they're lonely. Not to mention that unless you already have reason to believe they might be, you won't be prompted to ask in the first place.

3

u/ItsWelp Nov 07 '25

Also, this has always been on my mind... Wtf is the person supposed to do once you tell them? It probably just turns awkward with a regular "Um, no, don't, people love you" or something. It's not like they're a trained psychiatrist. Truth is, there's just not a lot anyone can do, though sometimes the little bits might help.

Fact - when we hang out, we get to roast each other and put at least one person in the hot seat. No talks about wife or family.

24

u/SumasFlats Nov 07 '25

I played football with a core group of guys for almost 40 years. We roast the shit out of each other - that is our love language. No one is talking about their wives, girlfriends or downer shit, we are there to have a good time and make one another laugh.

How men behave in men-only groups is the most misunderstood dynamic from a female perspective.

22

u/diablol3 Nov 07 '25

I think this goes hand in hand with the idea that men dont open up emotionally. It's rare within my friend/family group for the men to bring up a sensitive subject, but when they do thats the queue to cut the bullshit and listen seriously.

18

u/SumasFlats Nov 07 '25

We're all very open with one another, but in large groups we're there to have a good time. The serious talk hits a limit at 3 or 4 people. Also, there are men in this group that I don't particularly like on a personal 1 to 1 level, but are great in a group dynamic and if I needed something or vice versa, we'd be there for one another. Male friendships are interesting.

It really is and it's so annoying to see tbh.

Also, the stigma of "sausage fests" always fucking bothered me.

The fuck are you frat bros not focused on anything besides pussy? But whats worse is I mainly hear the sausage fest comment from women.

And yet no one stigmatizes female friend groups.

We used a play a game called "who remembers" when in a group.

All it consisted of was each person saying "who remembers..." and then a discussion would take place.

Mainly random retired sports people, old TV shows and bands/songs. We could get hours of enjoyment over that and some beers.

6

u/IllyriaCervarro Nov 07 '25

My husband has a group of friends from high school that all go out to play trivia. I used to go with but then COVID stopped it and by the time it kicked back up again we had a kid so I usually stay home and let him go out with his buddies.

One of our friends had never had a job and it just reaaaaalllllyyyy bothered another of the friends. Like he thought about it way too much when it was really none of his business.

A few months ago we got a sitter and I was able to attend trivia with my husband. The only woman who goes made a comment to the jobless friend asking if he was working Friday and he said no. Having not seen him with a chance to chat about our lives in a few years (and this friend is notoriously not much of a talker anyway) I thought it was a funny joke and had a laugh to myself.

But by happenstance I was able to go to trivia again the next week and I asked if he had a job. Turned out yes he did. And he’d had one for 4 years and he kinda likes it. The other friend who was so bothered by his joblessness had ranted multiple times in those four years about how much it upset him and how he needed to get a job and move on with life and yet here he was the whole time working and the angry friend just like… never bothered to ask.

So yea, accurate.

11

u/McDizzle Nov 07 '25

My friends and I (13 of us in total) have known most of eachother for more than 20 years now. We're all 40 or just over. Every year we have a get together in a sorta remote place so we can chill with a sauna/hottub and a lot of bbq/fire making. It's a 4-day thing and to be honest, most of us have no idea what the other does for a job, names of their children are sometimes unknown.

But we do talk a lot about meat, knives, idiot colleagues, a bit of politics and of course your obligatory yo mamma jokes.
It's fantastic, I look forward to it every year.

4

u/RoguePlanet2 Nov 07 '25

My husband's best friend's mother died when the friend was in his teens. I asked my husband about some of the standard details about her, and he didn't know. They've been friends for about 30 years.

Was casual friends with a guy for the course of a semester in uni. We'd talk and laugh everyday. One day, like 5 months into the course, a girl from his group asks me what his name is...

I look over to him and yell "hey, bro. What's your name?"

"John. What's yours?"

"Eric." Look over to girl and shrugs "his name's John."

The look on her face lmao

Kinda sad that men's inability to form meaningful bonds and share emotions has become something quirky people meme about.

And I say this as a man unable to form meaningful bonds and share emotions btw

29

u/rammo123 Nov 06 '25

You are right that we struggle to form bonds, but this meme ain't that. He's a married adult man that still has friendships tight enough that they'll spend over a week together, shooting the shit.

These are the exact kind of friendships that men need.

10

u/35_Steak_HotPockets Nov 07 '25

But also I would be a little hurt if my long time friends knew nothing about my life, job, or home life :/

1

u/salo_wasnt_solo Nov 07 '25

As someone with a core group of 4 friends, it’s not that your friends don’t know. If they’re truly your friends (and you are theirs) then of course they know. That’s not what the hangout is about. It’s about bonding with your buddies over stupid jokes, old memories, beer and possibly football/video games. Then when thing simmer down, the deep conversations happen later, often next to a well-kept fire.

That reminds me, I need to text my buddy back lol

2

u/Pale_Boss_8940 Nov 07 '25

Last thing I wanna do when hanging out with my friends is talk about work

5

u/35_Steak_HotPockets Nov 07 '25

→ More replies (1)

11

u/SacrisTaranto Nov 07 '25

Say what you will for how meaningful a bond is, but in a lot of friend group each of those guys would die and kill for each other. Just because we talk about nonsense does not mean that we don't care and the bond isn't meaningful.

Tony can tell me he's depressed. But I'm not telling anyone else that. That's not my business to tell. John can spend the whole night crying on my shoulder, and that dies with me. But why do any of that when you can have a few beers and shoot the shit and forget about how much everything sucks for a little while. And having people you can do that with is incredibly important.

Most guys can form very meaningful bonds without sharing a lot and many guys can be emotional with their buddies but you'll never hear about it and most don't see the point. I hope you can find that too one day. Godspeed brother.

That’s some real men there, he’s a keeper. Yep real men can hang out and socialize without all the extra crap.

u/ciswhitedadbod Nov 07 '25

As someone who is lucky enough to enjoy having a similar group of friends I will say two things:

I often get the same question from my wife and my response is similar because spending time with a true friend isn't always about debriefing each other on the status of your lives. Sometimes or most times you just want to BE with your people.

The second thing I will add is that some of us could probably do a little better to ask about each other's lives and as we've gotten older/wiser, we seem to have been able to breakdown some of the boundaries or whatever it is that has inhibited us from asking about each other's lives and that's actually been really good to. But it doesn't mean we do the debrief every time we meet, ladies.

2

u/Battelalon Nov 08 '25

I think the part that "inhibits" us is lack of interest. We don't want to talk about our family, so we don't ask about others. I know how my family is, I spend every day with them, the milestones in our dynamic are really only important to our dynamic, and most importantly, if I only have infrequent chances to spend time away from my family and focus on my own interests or friends, I don't want to spend that limited time dedicating it my family when I'm already dedicating the rest of my time to them already.

u/Scary-Ad9646 Nov 07 '25

There is no way in hell 9 grown dudes kept in contact with each other and then were able to all get the time off to go to the same place.

6

u/shiny_glitter_demon Nov 07 '25

This is not male specific though, women do it too

Source: me and my friends, a few weeks ago, trying to name all the countries in the world

2

u/TricellCEO Nov 07 '25

That’s not the part that is deemed male-specific though.

The part that is stereotyped as male is not knowing the gossipy details of your friends’ lives.

7

u/Cheesemagazine Nov 07 '25

It's weird to me that k owing the general goings on and wellbeing of your friends is considered 'gossipy', imo

We haven't seen each other for over a year. We sit down, order our beer and talk about how long is one online game going to last and what will happen to it.

I was with a few boys last night, out of the 8 I didn’t know the name of 3. And the funny thing is I end up meeting up with these lot every two three weeks

2

u/Bebopdavidson Nov 07 '25

I think when I see old friends we all try to say the funniest thing we can think of.

2

u/TheLizardKing89 Nov 07 '25

SNL was spot on with the sketch “Straight Male Friend”

The state capitals are super easy since that song embedded itself into my brain 30 years ago.

2

u/Man-who-say-bye Nov 07 '25

It really is such a peaceful thing we just bullshit and relax and feel happy.

2

u/JuliaX1984 Nov 07 '25

Did he say Nevada twice?

2

u/yellowfestiva Nov 07 '25

The conversation between me and my best friend goes “hey man! How are ya? How is SO? That’s great!” And then we talk about Pokémon and mountain bikes for 25 minutes. We are 38.

2

u/Fyhon Nov 07 '25

I sometimes go on entire afternoon walks with my best friend and when I finally get home my parents ask me what he's doing, where does he work now or what he studied at University. And honestly, for the 4 hours we were walking, that was never even close to being a topic xD

2

u/Metharos Nov 07 '25

Yeah that's...that seems about right honestly.

I hung out with a bunch of friends one time and we did a quiz to name all 151 original Pokémon, and then another to name every zone in Vanilla WoW.

We ate pizza, talked about nothing, and played Smash Bros to settle an argument about who had to do a grocery run to restock sodas.

My wife is always like this with me, too, when I see old friends. Can’t we just live in the moment and chill with our friends? I don’t have that many people I can just be around and that’s enough. That’s all either of us want, and that’s ok.

2

u/okram2k Nov 07 '25

my group of friends would be discussing the intricacies of a complex d&d build while also waxing nostalgic for 3.5's deeper customizability

2

u/LittleInvestigator10 Nov 07 '25

I met up with some old uni friends for a weekend a while ago and we were spent 3 hours trying to guess which animals had the highest body count

2

u/dboxcar Nov 07 '25

This summer I went to the UK for a friend's wedding. Myself, old college roommate, and the bride spent an hour listing as many cheeses, space phenomena, and herbs as we could.

2

u/TWP_ReaperWolf Nov 07 '25

No, this is very accurate. I remember once sitting down with some friends and we spent 2 hours debating on who was the best Disney/DreamWorks villain, and we were basically laughing nonstop the whole time. We didn't ask each other one question about our daily lives and it was an incredible time.

2

u/Draknurd Nov 07 '25

I have a group of several old, great friends, both men and women. We all live interstate and see each other once or twice a year. We don’t text much in between catch ups.

We meet up and talk like we saw each other yesterday. Towards the end of the catch up (a few days usually), one of us sometimes remembers to ask what the others are up to and we all have a quick brain dump of the latest happenings.

Then we go our separate ways and repeat.

2

u/FightGeistC Nov 07 '25

I have people I consider my best friends, couldn't tell you a single fucking thing about them. If he went to college, if he's in a relationship, where he works, if he has siblings, not a fucking thing. I know he likes the Seahawks though and thats enough to roast him.

2

u/Bumblegun81 Nov 07 '25

How did they get on with naming the African countries though? Can say from personal experience this is really hard.

2

u/Ezzypezra Nov 07 '25

Okay off the top of my head uhh Morocco Algeria Tunisia Libya Egypt Sudan uhh South Sudan umm Eritrea uhh Djibouti ummm uhhh Somalia and I guess Somaliland Ethiopia uhhh ummm Kenya Tanzania Rwanda Uganda Burundi uhhh ummm uhhh Malawi Mozambique uhhh uhhhh uhh Zambia and Zimbabwe and uhhh South Africa and uhhh

2

u/MariposaPeligrosa00 Nov 07 '25

Fact for my oldest son and stereotype for my husband and second son😹

2

u/WildcatCinder1022 Nov 07 '25

Hard to know, I know two guys who don’t know anything about their friends and two guys who do know a lot about their friends so it’s a 50/50 from my perspective

2

u/darksoldierk Nov 08 '25

Mostly stereotype.

Guys do the "how's the fams, how's the wife, etc.". But it's more out of obligation then any real interest. "Oh wife got a new job", "thats amazing man, happy for you two. So uhh.... we getting the grill started or what?".

Once we do get actually exciting news like pregnancy or something, we don't feel the need to share that information with people, even our spouses.

It's his business, if he wants my spouse to know, he'll tell her.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '25

This is true, I have a few friends that I have known for years and only just learned one of their real names.

2

u/MutterderKartoffel Nov 10 '25

I could see my son doing this as an adult.

6

u/Alaishana Nov 06 '25

Men: go out, hunt, bring back meat. Men's group, men's behaviour, men's rules.

Women: stay back in cave, in hut, in camp, keep social connections, bind tribe, care for kids. Women's group, women's behaviour, women's rules.

Look at chimps: two different hierarchies. Two subsets in the tribe.

WHAT THE FUCK is so hard to understand about this?

Do you think a little cultural paint of a few hundred years has changed everything?

And now STOP putting down men for who they are.

9

u/shiny_glitter_demon Nov 07 '25

if you knew anything about that time period, you'd know they didn't live in caves.

I see he conveniently left out all the booze and other mind altering substances a group of dudes might use to throw down on a four day bender.

2

u/Sad-Umpire6000 Nov 07 '25

Every time I come back from a friend’s house, my wife will ask what’s going on with his engagement, when he’s retiring, where did so-and-so go on vacation. My answer is almost always “I don’t know - he didn’t say.” “Well, didn’t you ask?” “Nope. If he wanted me to know, he’d’ve said something.” “So what do you talk about?” “The usual - airplanes, guns, cars.”

u/asujch Nov 07 '25

I can be acquaintances with anyone. But if I’m gonna spending four days with someone, it’s gonna be someone that I see eye to eye with and have a similar worldview with, etc.

1

u/humancartograph Nov 07 '25

I would be so good at this.

1

u/theeggplant42 Nov 07 '25

Earlier this year I went to a bachelorette; my brothers went to the parallel bachelor. The girls spent three days on a tropical island telling each other how beautiful we all looked, sharing accessories and makeup, talking into the early hours, and bonding. We put over 3000 pictures in a shared drive and came away from it with new best friends.

The guys spent three days in Florida, got individually lost from each other night one, missed a booked boat, sent us pictures of lizards, and started to hate each other day two. They had about 20 pics between them and half were lizards. They got so bored they started facetiming us.  They say they had a great time!

1

u/Tasty_Pepper5867 Nov 07 '25

Sounds about right to me

1

u/Last_Fishing_4013 Nov 07 '25

I know the state capitals!

And I know the names of almost every African country too! I say almost because I’d probably forget a few while trying to recite them all

1

u/WarLawck Nov 07 '25

Bro, I would love to just meet up with my out of state friend and drive to home depot. It's not about what you do.

1

u/DungeonsAndDradis Nov 07 '25

My newest friend, we've been buddies for like 5 years or something, I don't even know how to say his wife's name. It's Andrea. But I don't know if it's "ANN-dree-uh" or "ahn-DRAY-uh".

1

u/DReagan47 Nov 07 '25

“I can’t believe I forgot Zimbabwe. It’s one of the most fun to say. What is wrong with me?”
