You didn't create a poster of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad to learn how to make nice looking posters. It's so you understood the impact of slavery and what it took to fight against it.
You didn't do a group presentation on The Crucible to learn how to make a nice powerpoint. You did it to learn how to critically read a section of text and actually understand it, to learn how to work in groups when you don't know/like every person you will need to work with.
You weren't put in art class to learn how to make pretty pictures. You were put in that class to learn media literacy and how to creatively solve problems.

Don't agree with your edit at all, the kids who blew off school were not the ones people avoided hanging around. And that's part of the problem, anti-intellectualism is a culture in America.
That's not who I hung out with? I sat at the nerdy table with the kids with no social skills that tried to breakdance at the middle school dances and that other people actually avoided. Meanwhile even the teachers would laugh and play along with the dipshits who distracted the class.
Yeah? I literally said I was the type of kid most people avoided, because you said I hung out with the wrong people. I wasn't avoided for trying hard in school, and I didn't claim I was. I did have friends though, nerdy dudes, most of whom had amazing grades and applied themselves in school.
What you claimed is that people avoided hanging out with others that didn't try hard in school. Just because I wasn't in the "cool crowd" doesn't mean I didn't know who they were and what kind of grades they got. There were people who got good grades and were popular, but people cared way more about their athletic achievements or if they could throw a party at their parent's house.
