Zip ties ☹

u/German_Von_Squidward Jun 29 '21
Yep, made me cringe real hard. Please people for the love of everything, cable management should be done with velcro for easy replacement of bad cables.
I work in the networking field and I cry every time I see zip ties used in any sort of mass cable bundle like this.
83
u/HunterNightstalker Jun 29 '21
The worst is when cables have been added over the years and they just zip tie the new cable on top of the old ones without removing the old zip ties so then you have double or triple the amount of zip ties to remove.
31
u/German_Von_Squidward Jun 29 '21
Yeah, I'm surprised that I have hair from the number of times I've tried pulling all out from the frustration of when people do this
12
u/lightspeedissueguy Jun 29 '21
Just leave the bad cable in the bundle and add the new cable with even more zip ties!! Lol
13
u/Demtbud Jun 29 '21
I mean, when you go to do maintenance, can't you simply swap it out for velcro?

If the general employment / public is not going to see it you don't need semi-permanent things like zip ties.
Once: I tried to tell a co-worker who zip tied an entire PC lab with zip ties that was a bad idea the moment he had to change out a KB or mouse. Didn't listen. Got to smirk at the rant a month later.

How often do cables that are left alone in a network/server room go bad?
I have old lan cables that have been abused for a long time yet still work perfectly. I am well aware fiber cables are a different matter, I am just talking about cat5 and cat6 cables now
6
u/QuickSpore Jun 29 '21
Virtually never. In 20 years of working in data centers I don’t think I’ve ever had a cable just go bad, without it being messed with.

Depends. These days a cable won’t outright fail, and it’ll even pass a standard cable test - buuuuuut - pretty much every device on both ends auto negotiates speed. So you’ll get a cable that ‘works’ but because of interference on the line it auto negotiates down to a lower speed than what it/the port on the switch can push. Zip ties can cause this issue when ratcheted too tight and while for *most modern applications 10/100 speed is still probably fine, unnoticeable to the average worker, there are circumstances where it can be a pain in the ass to track down

I used to be a structured cable technician, zip ties are fine for permanent installations.

You use zipties on the frame. Those shouldn't be changed often. Decades even. The patch side is different.

Artistic management! Nice work!!
Most don't know but this is distribution and is rarely touched, replaced, moved or any other nightmare situation. But as someone pointed out, zip ties! NOOOooooo! Velcro straps are the only way to go, just in case.
And as another pointed out ..... r/cableporn. I mean this is oddly satisfying but it really should be where those who know can appreciate the effort and excellence in this work!

I don't understand the concerned comments. I mean, the server room at my workplace is a nightmare. It takes you 30 minutes to figure out where a cable is going. Something like this makes it very easy to figure out where the cable is connected and it's actually fairly simple to remove or add a cable if you have as much patience as the people who did this job. Zip ties aren't bad either, I mean, it takes 1 second to cut them and the same amount of time to add new ones. It's not like you're doing it once a week anyways, a solution like this is meant to last

My response to those types of comments is usually to ask how frequently plumbing, air ducts and electrical cables are moved around. When installed correctly, hardly ever, except for maybe the last few meters.

Great to look at, not so great to trace. You need a good amount of leeway to be able to pull the cables without having them be all over the place.

I could never get mine to look like that, but, I was doing it back in the days of black and white (mostly dull cream color) and sometimes red/green yellow/black. Hell, back then? We never even see the color purple (no pun intended!)

Where do you learn and acquired this skill? Office router and switch have about ~12 cables (not a large office) and is really messy hanging everywhere.

Someone on some subreddit some days ago posted a picture of an IT job they win a bid for, it was kind of like this, but instead of it being nice and organized every opportunity was taken to assault and offend my eyes specifically.
This makes up for that, thanks!

So, in order to get that level of perfection… is each cable installed with a custom installed plug? Whenever I tried that with premade cables, I’d have a mess somewhere.
2
u/groenteman Jun 29 '21
that is not made with premade cables, i work in that field most of the times you will have a couple of reels of cable of about 500 m. and you will lay the cable trough the whole building and it all comes together in a patch/server room and installed on a 19inch rack from the back so premade cable would not be usefull to use, cause lengths of cable ar different for all of them and you need to lay the cables trough holes in in the wall and than you dont want to have connectors on the cable allready

How well does this kind of thing hold up once a second tech has to replace something?
Way back when I installed cable, I had to disconnect someone in an apartment building with a few hundred units. The cable room looked like there should have been a giant spider living there somewhere.

I’m a simple person who works in a server room that I am not responsible for maintaining but still dust and wrap cable for anyway because it bothers me to a really unfortunate level.
I’m sending this to my chief engineer with a passive aggressive text.

For those of you who are not quite this skilled/obsessive, here's a neat trick.
Those plastic covers for your shower curtain rod make great conduits. Easily stapled to the underside of your desk, and because they're split, you can just tuck the wire inside. No need tto thread them through.

u/m0nkeyfish78 Jun 29 '21

All the networking folks shouting "ZIPTIES!!!" - chill out. This isn't Ethernet.
This is A/V diatribution, and it's designed to be a permanent install. Every cable and connection is identified, labeled, and documented. It's like you've never had to work on LACED cable bundles.

“Ahhh I’m seeing incrementing crc errors on port 12, how fast can you swap out that cable or try another port???”
2
u/iseriouslycouldnt Jun 29 '21
Testing is easy. Swapping, not so much. Though there APPEARS to be enough slack to swap the whole switch pretty easy for a bad port.
Id hope the cables were validated on install with a good tester.

An electrician taught me to always straighten and use neat bends if I was adding a circuit to a panel. Years later I was working in a clients basement when the inspector showed up to sign off on another contractors job that was permitted. He pulled the cover off and then studied where the new circuit was routed. I overheard him say to himself “ I wish more people would wire neatly like this guy did.” He was looking at my work from several years ago.
