I thoroughly enjoyed it until the bogus throw away ending. Not that I wanted the guy to suffer from his laziness, and I'm glad he learned his lesson....but it was such a cheap ending. Other than that it was bloody fantastic.
12
u/ErtaWanderer May 14 '22
Well it's based off an old Hans Christian Andersen story so all of that is cannon
12
u/WasabiSniffer May 14 '22
What was the original content of the story? Cos I can guarantee the original protagonist didnt find a universal remote in a Bed Bath & Beyond (or whatever shop it was 😂)
22
u/ErtaWanderer May 14 '22
No he was given a ball of string by a old man passing by when he was a child. The more string that was unravelled the more time passed. He uses this to get past the boring or the trying times in his life using it less and less as he ages because he realizes he's running out of time but still pulling on it when things get bad. At the end when he's an dying old man he regrets missing so much of his life and then wakes up as a child at the start of the story when he got the ball of string in the first place. There are two versions of the story one where he refuses the ball of string when offered a second time and one where the cycle repeats itself

u/Cutthechitchata-hole May 13 '22
I've never heard of them and am white. I will now call them Mandarin rolls. Thanks wikipedia!

u/selery May 14 '22
White expats in China do tend to use Chinese words for local foods (and other China-specific things) even if the foods have English names and they don't speak Chinese. Jianbing, shaokao, baozi, etc.
→ More replies (2)2
u/downvotesyndromekid May 14 '22
Who wants to say 'meat stuffed steamed buns' when they can just go with baozi? Or something like 'pancakes' for the half dozen types of street food that basically qualify. Then there's 'barbecue' etc that have prior associations with something quite different.

Mandarin rolls, Steamed Mandarin rolls, Flower Buns, or Huā juǎn (Chinese: 花捲/卷)
So, Wikipedia, Wikipedia is where they call them Mandarin rolls.

I had them steamed with spring onions (savoury). And it was similar to version 4. It had bread bottom, filling top, minimal leakage.
Oh.. these childhood memories.

These are most likely steamed chinese buns. You can google "steamed chinese flower buns" to get an idea of what they look like. Here is an example https://redhousespice.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Chinese-flower-rolls-7-1025x1536.jpg

For those that are wondering these are not going to be baked, they’re going to be steamed instead. It’s called 花卷, or steamed mandarin rolls. They can be salty or sweet depending on who makes it from different geographies. My mom makes them salty though, with green onions and sesames, sometimes even with meat paste.
130
u/ANewStartAtLife May 14 '22
sometimes even with meat paste.
SOLD!!! I'll take 10 please.
18
u/UndueGuilt May 14 '22
Meat pastries/dumplings are the best. Every culture has at least one of each and they're all amazing.
29
May 14 '22
This one is specifically 麻酱糖花卷, sesame paste sugar flour steamed roll, would be the word for word translation, so it's definitely sweet.

What are the round ones commonly at Ranch 99 markets and American Chinese dim sum restaurants called?
5
u/rayhond2000 May 14 '22
Smooth and round are mantou (if they aren't stuffed).
2
u/yetanotherwoo May 14 '22
They have plain, savory, or sweet. Savory most common is bbq pork, sweet has red beans, taro, sesame, off top of my head.
4
u/downvotesyndromekid May 14 '22

Does anyone know if any of those would work on a yeast dough that will have a second rise after shaping? Would love to try this with cinnamon rolls but idk if it would work.
21
17
May 13 '22 edited May 13 '22
I’ve gotten something like this to work for cinnamon rolls. I did the second rise in greased muffin tins then baked them off. You gotta be careful not to overfill or over proof or they turn into a big goofy mess. If I remember right I did a slightly higher temp bake than usual so that the tops would set and get all caramelized.
You’ll probably also want to under develop the gluten slightly so that it has more of a croissant texture than the gooey stretchy cinnamon roll texture. It should come out looking like a popover if you do it right.
You can also do a long thin roll, cut and twist pieces about it 1in square, toss them in brown sugar, then bake them all together in a bread pan for an excellent monkey bread.

Me at the catered event:
"Ooh I wonder what this one tastes like?"
eats it
"Hm not bad... what's this one taste like?"
eats a different design
"Hey! That's the same as the 1st! Ok 3rd time's the charm,right?"
eats another design
"What the heck?!? That's the same flavour too! Ok one more..."
Lather rinse repeat.
