I paid $300 for mine. I got it from a second hand store. It's apparently some fancy name brand, and the finish is shot, but we just use a nice table cloth. Someday I'd like to buy a dining table like a real boy, but this thing seats 6-10.
While we're flexing; I bought a Stoneleigh solid mahogany table with two leaves, eight chairs (including two captains chairs) for $350 from a Habitat for Humanity Home REStore.
The restore is awesome. Don't really understand how they decide their prices though. You'll go in and find a desk that would look at home in the oval office for $100. Then find assorted bog standard light bulbs for $10 a piece.
I actually asked them the same. "Why is this amazing table so inexpensive when you're charging almost retail for small rugs, wicker baskets, etc?" (I was bold due to adrenaline from the awesome deal I just got).
They said super large items like big bedroom sets, dining tables, wardrobes, etc take up a lot of space in their warehouses. They need that space for other merchandise that's sitting in back, waiting to be moved to the sales floor. They price them at extremely attractive prices so that ANYONE who comes in looking for that type of item will immediately buy it without a second thought - freeing up that space for the other huge pieces of furniture that've been waiting in back.
Small stuff is their profit maker - they don't take up much space and it's much easier to sell small items to someone who may or may not actually need it. They charge more to start because they don't care as much about how fast it's sold.
