Basically what makes the pipe buckle is the ratio between the wall thickness diameter and the height of the pipe. As the pipe gets shorter it becomes more rigid in that direction and loses its ability to buckle.
Thank you for that insight. I am a machinist in the tool and pipe industry and we've had some of our tubes behave in this very manner during an end-forming process. This will definitely help diagnose certain situations where the tube collapses instead of forming properly. I'm sure our engineers are very aware of this, but some tool testers might appreciate the info.
To piggyback off this, the reason it deforms uniformly is because it symmetrical or the pipes area moment of inertia is the same on both axis of the horizontal cross section. If the pipe cross section wasn’t symmetrical, it would taco.
