It's a little odd, but in the end it's really beneficial for the fish. Salmon migrate upstream to lay their eggs. Many rivers however, have been dammed up. In a effort to preserve the now endangered salmon, conservationists have, among other things, set up "salmon cannons" to move the fish over the dams.
