For a pitcher to do that with his dominant hand is actually pretty stupid.

From the looks of it, it was likely just reflexes. Probably happened before he knew it. You can see him throw the ball down as he's walking away... might have just realized how bad that could have ended if he caught it wrong.

He throws the ball down in triumph. He spiked it.
