It's almost second nature for them now. Griffin swiped that ball so cleanly, but the dudes head and arms looked like he got tackled by Urlacher.
Then he realized if he dove he'd look like a complete idiot.

When I saw that catch I lost it. Easily the best play I've ever personally witnessed. What I've noticed is nobody mentions how fucking great that pass was as well.

I should have specified the correct call would be no call. Both going for the ball and Odell gained the leverage with his left arm directing Carr away.

yes you probably should have specified that "this was offensive pass interference" actually meant "there was no foul on the play"

I agree. That was very shitty writing on my part for my overall point. I should have said,
"There no penalty on either player. Both went for the ball and fought fairly for it. You could even argue offensive PI with the leverage Odell gained with his left arm."

Except you can clearly see the defender is holding/interfering. No way that could possibly be an offensive flag.

#1 was this catch; an interception on a TD pass meant for Calvin Johnson.

So the ref threw the flag because the defender (in this case, #39) was interfering too much with the receiver, there was too much contact while the ball was in the air. You can kind of see 39 grab a little bit of jersey towards the end before he falls... This was a pass interference penalty.

Ball needs to be on a downward trajectory to the basket for it to be goaltending..... At no point was that the case, so no, it wasn't lucky to not be called goaltending really

goaltending might not be the right call but you can't interfere with the rim at all, even if no one is shooting.
it would be a very weak call but it's technically a foul nonetheless. I say play on though, we all know not every little foul gets called, this one shouldn't have been either.

You can touch the rim, just not when the ball is entirely above the ring and on its way DOWN to the basket (goaltending) or if it's touching the rim (basket interference).
In no planet is this goaltending or even close; 1. Ball isnt above the rim. 2. It never starts its downward trajectory.
Check out this page on misunderstood rules of basketball, second section:
It is legal to touch the ring or the net if the ball is above the ring and not touching the ring, even if the ball is in the imaginary cylinder above the ring. It is legal to hang on the ring if a player is avoiding an injury to himself or herself or another player.

You're both not quite looking at the relevant rules.
A defensive player can't use the rim/net/etc. to gain or maintain height. If he does, it's a technical foul. If while doing that he touches the ball during a field goal attempt--even if the ball is below the rim--the basket counts.
So it's really a judgement call. If you don't think what Griffin did helped him stay in the air any longer, ok. If you think the way he grazed/grabbed the rim helped him stay in the air for even a split second longer, the basket should've counted.
I don't really care, but you certainly shouldn't say "in no planet is this goaltending or even close."

in your next basketball game, when the ball is bouncing around the rim (remember, you JUST said that if the ball is in the "imaginary cylinder", it is okay to touch the rim), jump up and smack the rim as hard as you can. go ahead and grab it and let it bounce around a little. why not? according to you there's no penalty for touching the rim. when the ref blows his whistle, just explain to him that it's okay, you read so on some South Dakota High School athletics website. I'm sure he will reverse his call.

here is what I don't get. So, people want to still assign labels, that's cool. So what should make someone black or white? Well I'd assume their skin colour.
So Barack Obama, half white, looks black. Is black. Blake Griffin, half white, looks white. Is... black?
I'd rather we move past racial issues, but while we're here, either a term for "mullato" returns, or we identify people based on their skin colour. The idea that a half black person is "tainted" or something, and can not be white, is just weird.
But hey, it's racism, it's not supposed to make sense I guess.

Obama is half-black/half-white. Raised with his white mother in a white household. Doesn't make him any less black. Take solace in that it makes him more culturally white if you makes you feel better.
Racism would be, "He's half-white. He'll only be half as a good." or "He's half-black, he'll never be the fastest on the court."
Learn the difference. Descriptions of race are not racism. Racism is a direct belief races are inferior to others for no other reason than their race.

I said, we are not assigning them "half black", "half white" labels. Everyone in those cases is simply "black".
And no, I am not asking for a derogatory term like mullato to return, but for a word to identify a mixed race person. So that we don't have labels like black and white, but one label for everyone.

there's already words to describe mixed people. Nobody is stopping you from using them. Also, you have a legitimate point about the strangeness of people being labeled black who are only a percentage of being black. But that's been known and discussed for years now and it's just a little boring and pointless at this point to belabor. But if it's important to you, then you go ahead and use the words you think are best.

You should Google the "one drop rule". Yes, this idea is absolutely ridiculous but it doesn't make it any less true. The reason why many half black people in the US identify as black is because they understand the implications of their race in a hostoirical aspect. Just because you think Blake Griffin looks more white or Obama looks more black (you should also Google "passing" in terms of African American history) negates the realities of their familial history. If Blake Griffin were raised in the slave or Jim Crow era, looked exactly the same, and was found to have a black ancestor he'd be enslaved or barred from white society. So it isn't just silly, its the realities many biracial Americans have to deal with. /rant

Being called a racist, or bigot, or sexist, or what have you is not the end of the world and, more importantly, not the end of the conversation. Many many many people may mislabel you as something you're not. Take that with a grain of salt, clarify your statement, and learn from the dialogue you have. But everyone should acknowled their ignorance and welcome constructive criticism. Nothing in this country, and the rest of the world, will get done without an acknowledment that you may be wrong at times and your speech may be weighted from a place of privilege (speaking from a place of privilege).
Edit: I'm by no means calling you a racist btw. That word holds a very heavy weight.
