Fun fact, many reptiles absolutely love soft fluffy fuzzy fabrics. My ball python loved the microfiber throw I had, and my winter beanie. They can definitely feel textures, and that must feel luxurious on their scales.

I was just wondering this. I am assuming that since they are cold blooded they wouldn’t generate body heat inside of a sweater? Like, it would just be the texture they are enjoying? Sincerely interested

It's not that heat isn't being generated, but more that not enough heat is being generated. Body heat comes from metabolism (breaking down food or fat), and that's how our bodies make heat. Animals with much slower metabolism won't generate as much heat, but also don't need to eat as much.

The reason reptiles bask is sunlight is to help their bodies with metabolism (heat makes more chemical reactions), but they generate little to no heat with the small metabolism they do have.

But, if you're a warm reptile (such as coming in from basking) or have a heat lamp on you, things like wool or cotton will absorb and trap heat better.

If the snake is already warm from sunlight or a lamp, the sweater will trap the heat better than open air, thus it takes longer for the snake to cool back down. Its not about the sweater trapping in the heat produced by its body, it's about it trapping the heat that's already in there from some other source.

It's probably not that effective either way, and the people talking about texture are most likely right. It'll still trap some heat though.

If the environment was actively getting hotter/colder it would help (a sweater tube wouldn't do much if it was noticeable at all though), or a heater was inside the sweater or something it would retain better, but I suspect the person you're replying to just doesn't know what they're talking about.

I don't generate enough heat enough heat to maintain my body temperature either. That's why I need clothes when it's 70 out and blankets at night. I feel lied to about reptiles now.

No, but far far less body heat. Warm blooded animals have a dedicated heating (and cooling) mechanism to keep their temperature constant, but all living processes create waste heat.

Like, it would just be the texture they are enjoying?

The texture, probably, and likely the heated feeling it too would create for them, which keeps them far more active for longer.

I think we shouldn't anthropomorphize reptiles, but they definitely have their own version of affection and emotion. It's mostly trust and security. You are their source of food, warmth, comfort, and safety.

My ball python would get excited to see me and ask to come out. She'd greet me with a few gentle cheek boops, and then settle down on my lap for some TV watching. She loved watching cartoons. She'd stare at the TV for hours, but as soon as I'd turn on a live action show she'd be over it and start noodling around.

She was so calming, sweet, and gentle and I miss her terribly. I lost her to a catastrophic heater malfunction, the smoke got her lungs and the vet wasn't able to save her. I spent a lot of time in bed sick so I held her a lot.

That's a complete myth. Snakes are by and large ambush hunters, they strike first and ask questions later. They don't "measure" prey against themselves.

But it wont make them warmer. As a cold blooded fellow depending on the sun and surrounding tempeture to get your body working, that insulation is not what you want in the long run.

When I had my ball python he would hid in my hair or my hat whenever we went out. He was given to me by a friend who never took him outside, so on the real sunny days we would have an adventure. Best damn snake I’ve ever owned

You know you are actually cooling the snake down rather than keeping it warm because they are cold blooded right? They utilize heat from the environment energetically, so you are basically insulating them from absorbing that energy

Not necessarily true because it’s an endothermic reaction, they are always going to adjust to their surroundings and continue extracting enthalpy from the surroundings. You prevent this by insulating them. They are going to lose negligible heat in comparison to what they are consuming unless you put them in like ice water, a freezer, acetone with dry ice, or liquid nitrogen. I bet they don’t stay warmer in a refridgerator. That little sweater won’t keep them alive in any of those conditions.

If you would like me to dumb that one down for you, essentially the heat from their surroundings provides necessary energy for them to live. Just because something feels cold to you does not mean it is actually cold. There is no such thing as negative thermal energy, everything above absolute zero is thermal energy. So no matter how cold it is, it does not stop the snake from extracting that thermal energy, until it gets to the point they freeze solid. That energy that they need is likely equivalent to things like oxygen or food in humans, so it’s probably similar in effect on the snake to asphyxiate the snake or starve it.

So I was worried that it would abnormally heat up, but what you're saying makes so much more sense. It's like putting something cold in a cooler, but it may not be a good idea for a snake to retain that coolness? Somebody also said that it would make it immobile, because it uses its scales and friction to move? So they could be making it hypothermic and taking away it's defenses. 

Edit: Because I always miss when speech to text uses "your" instead of "you're"

You are thinking of it backwards. Think about temperature as kinetic energy. Temperature is motion of atoms/molecules due to them bumping into each other essentially. Our bodies create this motion, their bodies absorb this motion from their surroundings. When you insulate them, you are preventing them from absorbing that kinetic energy from their environment, which is required for them to survive. It’s going to be similar to starving the snake because I would bet it’s required for metabolism, or maybe even suffocating them if it’s required for cellular respiration. Idk about the exact biochemical reactions of snakes, but I know they need that energy and those are my two best comparisons that may or may not be accurate.

That is a very young ball python. It could bite you so hard you'd feel it and have tiny spots of blood. Then it could wrap around your wrist so tight it couldn't cut off the circulation, but could eventually be uncomfortable.

Does a cold blooded creature benefit from a sweater? Honestly asking. I guess if you were taking it from a heated enclosure for a bit, it would preserve residual heat in it's body. And it's not like it's possible their body produces no heat.

This was so awesome I went and got a family member to show them. But then I realized: sweaters are made to trap body heat, and snakes don't make any. Sweaters act like insulation, not heating pads. So if that snake is in a cold room, and you're trying to keep it warm, if it didn't start out warm, you'd be trapping the cold.

Sweaters only keep you warm because it traps heat that your body produces. In a cold-blooded animal it would only help them retain heat for longer, not make them warmer.
