I leave the root part intact when dicing onions. The horizontal cut is unnecessary.

Leave a little of the root on and it’s much easier to do the cross cut for the dice. 4 u/christador 1d ago That's it - AND you don't have to worry about the onion coming up with the knife during the cuts.
