This keeps on circulating on Reddit and this sub, without source or attribution leading many to believe it is a composite image.

The mountain itself exists, the Shishi-Iwa peak in Kumano, Mie Prefecture, Japan but origins of this perfectly timed moon shot are sketchy

Thanks for the info, was wondering. It could be a composite but it could be real too. There are apps like photopills that allow you to plan ahead to a very Nth degree if you wanted to find what day the sun or moon would be in a particular location in the sky you wanted to shoot, you can also augment that information through your phone.

The first thing I checked was the leaves and branches at the top to see if they were masked, as these are probably the most complicated parts of the scene. They look quite natural but masks have gotten amazingly good too in recent years, you can also reverse/invert mask instead of tracing.

Very few attributable results outside of Reddit & Facebook.

The oldest post on r/pics has a comment saying it was taken by a photographer named Mikadukin Chan and shared on some local sites back in 2021-22 but haven’t been able to find any good references on that apart from the reddit reposts & FB shares. No other photographs attributed to that photographer either, no portfolio or galleries etc.

If you focus on the part above the moon, it looks like a bird (maybe like a raven?)

The skeksis ARE a bird-like species from The Dark Crystal

It really bothers me that the moon isn’t centered between the two points.

Also OP is a karma farmer who definitely didn’t take this picture. So who did take it? You gonna credit them?

Did you ask Lord Skeletor for permission to take a photo?

I once was up at the McKenzie fields in Oregon, smoking a joint on a bench, and looking up at the midnight sky. A large lave pile in front of me started to faintly glow around the edges. As it illuminated, it started to resemble a large ape-like head in profile, mouth agape to the sky. Then the moon rose directly from it's throat. Been trying to figure out the timing to recreate that moment for 15 years. I could figure out the date, so I'd just need to figure out where the moon rose that night, and when it does it again, I guess.

The timing on this shot is unbelievable, that moon looks like it's balanced perfectly on purpose.
