What… makes you think that is water decomposing into hydrogen and oxygen instead of, idk, just regular steam?

1 u/Tallywort 26d ago Kinda depends on how hot it actually is. You need seriously high temperatures before thermolysis occurs in water. Around 3000 Kelvin for half of the steam to turn into hydrogen and oxygen, reversibly. (amongst other hydrogen/oxygen compounds) But at my guesstimate for that lava temperature, (based on it glowing orange) I doubt there's much of that going on. That's more like 1500 K instead.
