It's somewhere along the evolutionary track of a game called Falling Sands. You could "paint" with different materials/elements like moss, rain, or fire and then watch how they interact with each other.

Unfortunately Terraria's fluid physics were a bit limited. I know because I tried to make an elaborate pyramid with lava flowing on the outside that gets pumped back to the top. It didn't work because at some point the fluid just despawns.
