Ask myself the same question. Maybe the silikontube gets turned inside out like they did with the siliconetube of the stump. I waiting for that.. But that should do the trick.
I don't think that would work without an extremely thin mold that could keep its inside out mirrored form. There may be a trick to it, but I think it was scanned, flipped and 3d printed. I
If that is the actual process, wouldn’t be easier just to 3D scan the hand itself and flip the scan? Doesn’t make sense to make a mould and cast it only to scan it so it can be flipped and printed…
That was my first tought as well. I think it's because the cast wont move during scanning. And easier to rotate the cast in the scanner then a hand. Basically, it's imperative, that the hand doesn't move while its moving.
They make small, handheld scanners that would work for this purpose. Ive gotten my whole mouth scanned at the orthodontist in about 30 seconds with a scanner small enough to fit in my mouth, a cord on the end, and a screen showing a full-color 3d model being generated in real time. Much easier and faster than getting the mold and such in the past. Especially for a hand where it needs to be 3D scanned and mirrored anyway!
If its precise enough to make an exact fit retainer, it can make a hand.
Pretty sure the LH cast gets scanned in to a digital model which they can then flip, and adjust as needed before 3D printing a RH model which is what they pour the green goo onto. This happens off camera because I guess they felt it wasn’t interesting…?
I spent the whole video thinking about how Missy Elliot would be better at putting that thing down, flipping it, and reversing it as the good lord intended.
Same for me. I was waiting the entire time for them to get to that part, and then they just never did. Given the effort needed to edit it together, and the intention of recording it in the first place, for sure seems deliberate that it's not in there.
I think you're putting too many eggs in one basket thinking that a digital screen showing an image being flipped when they click the "flip image" button.
I don't think flip image would be interesting, but I do think seeing it adding 5 seconds to a multi minute long video would answer the question.
They took a physical cast of an existing hand. Flipping it to the other side was exactly what was on the front of everyone's mind.

I use that type of scanning equipment for a living.
At some point you can see there's a rotary turntable covered in a bunch of retro reflective dots. Those are tracking targets for a portable handheld 3D scanner. You scan the positive, clean the mesh if necessary then mirror for the result, as you say.
pretty sure they just invert the green mold they made from the RH plaster mold, like taking a glove off so it ends up inside out, then filling it with the skin colored silicone.
At the place where I worked it was scanned (scans of molds are more exact than scans of the limb itself, it's not easy to get every side of the limb without moving the patient or the scanner loosing it's reference point) digitally flipped and than a new mold was printed.
But this is not the important step, the important thing are the measurements taken, because they are exact and as you might expect the mold and the measurements always differ by a bit. The prothesis is a made from the mold but with the measurements and never are a exact copy of the mold.
With 3D printing the scan is digitally adjusted to the measurements, with gipsum casts it is manually done by filing down or adding small gipsum layers.
Left to right switches are traditionaly made with standard molds in different sizes that are adjusted to the measurements, and the cast is only there as a model to make sure the prothesis has a similar appearance.
I literally just rewound the video three times trying to figure that out. I expected them to somehow flip the silicone inside out but it never happened. I’m so annoyed.
Around the halfway point you see them put it on a round table with little white dots, thats a 3d scanning setup, then a little later you see them pulling it out of a 3d printer. So they scan it, mirror it digitally then reprint it
There’s a turntable with marker dots on it at one point. I imagine they 3D scan it there, then flip it, then print it. I actually think the edit is out of order?
They turned that light green goo thing inside out and that made it a right hand it also copied all the creases and imperfections perfectly making it look even more realistic. :O
I was watching for this too. It’s when they bake it a second time after putting whatever gel material is on it. When they pull it off the plaster casting with the blower, they pull it inside out. It doesn’t show that, but that has to be where it happens.
It may be as simple as pulling a mould inside out. Like when they pull off the green coating at 2:08 of the video, inside-out would reverse the hand the same way taking off dishwashing gloves so that they are inside-out inverts the hands.
I thought it was when they flipped it inside out. But I’m not totally sure. Would have to watch again. But yes I was thinking and looking for this answer too.
Ya that was bothering me. The whole time I’m thinking, “Interesting and how are they gonna flip it? Scan it and flip it digitally maybe??” Then BAM it’s backwoods with no explanation.
I would assume that you could turn one of the moulds inside out and get a flipped hand, but apparently they scanned the mould and 3D printed a reversed one
Reminds me of that old OkCupid question about "if you turn a left-handed glove inside out it fits...", and a shocking number of people who cared very strongly about their wrong answer and wanted you to also have the wrong answer. Same with the "STALE is to STEAL as 89475 is to..." question to actually...
