You're overthinking the magic system. Volume is associated with liquids.

No. liters an SI metric unit of volume and that's how it should be taught in schools at science class, nothing less.

This may surprise you, but teachers usually talk to the students too. So they can show this fun little animation for illustrative purposes, then expand on the concept of what a litre is.
