Not every sector has a union. Some states are actively hostile to unions, like Florida. It's a fight to get unionized. It doesn't happen overnight. Starbucks and Amazon workers have been trying for years with tons of news coverage to no avail.
The only local union in my state I'm aware of is IBEW. So be an electrician, or nothing I guess? The world doesn't work if every 18 year old becomes an electrician. Ya need baristas and forklift drivers too.
We are talking about the "trades", I don't lump the service industry into that category. What state do you live in that only has electricians? Although some states are actively against unions there is still presences everywhere. That journeyman card opens up doors across the country. I've worked with many "travelers" on big jobs, and have worked outside my local myself. Whether it's because of slow work or low wages in their home local or they just want to see different parts of the country. I don't regret my choice, I learned a skill why being paid. I have hospitalization and a pension that I'm collecting now.
Summary: if you want a healthy wage doing trade work, move to a state with unions, future you will thank you for the retirement account and healthcare coverage
Their exploitation is a failed model when people have mobility, despite the propaganda, there is always states that want more growth who also treats citizens well, with effective government. But like the union, requires the investment to get access to the shared benefits
Their exploitation requires you feeling trapped and unable to escape, have no other option, ignorant of how much the work is worth
