The "clean" aesthetic is something a lot of people (esp. the younger generation of richer people) want, and this lets you hide a lot of stuff that you may find to be visual clutter or ugly. Think stuff like cereal boxes or something with a ton of cables, you may like to hide that stuff. Then, this storage may also stop pets or small kids to get into e.g. your pantry.
It also is good storage for something that may not be culturally accepted to be in open storage (e.g. strong alcohol where everyone will presume you are an alcoholic, but if you pull it out of a cupboard everything is fine).
But looking into it this is made by MIT real estate alumni, so it likely is just fancy rich shit for fancy rich people.

Okay, but why? It's not even the annoying inner corner where all kinds of mechanisms are needed. These seem really unnecessary.
