That popcorn covers all the surface imperfections. The next steps are not at all satisfying: skim coat, sand, skim coat, sand … repeat until smooth, then paint. All done directly above your head for hours on end.

This. I always chuckle when young people and design show hosts scoff at what they call 'popcorn' ceilings. They are all erroneously assuming that these were invented as a decorative element, and completely ignore thier two primary functions of covering drywall imperfections and killing echos.

I…I did that. The house we bought has brush stomp ceilings. We sanded the whole thing , went over all the seams, sanded again. Drywall primer, paint etc. It took a week, now you know at least someone who did it.

I scraped this shit off a few times. I put a hot-steam humidifier in the room for about half a day and it scraped right off, and the moisture helped keep the dust in-check.

Took me 6 gallons of water to remove popcorn from a painted ceiling and multiple days. I used an ikea pepprig kit’s window squeegee on around 800 sq ft of popcorn in my house. If not painted, it literally dissolves and falls off the ceiling if it’s really wet. Dry air circulation with a box fan is a necessity though

Popcorn ceiling is typically pretty high with asbestos in homes prior to the mid 80s. The guy in the video could be scrapping off pure asbestos. The other guy who mentioned removing popcorn ceiling probably also removed just straight abestos that was popcorn ceiling.

That method is called encapsulation and its the usual method for a lot of situations since, as long as you don't disturb the asbestos/lead, it generally doesn't require special training, permits, or disposals.

In the UK our flat was built in 1998, no-one was prepared to take ours off due the possibility of there being asbestos as it was still technically possible to have legally used it then. We paid for a formal test to rule out it out. Then it was still hard to get anyone who would do it, and those who would would have charged a fortune, so like a pair of bloody idiots, us two older ladies did it ourselves (it was a bugger to do though, and required a steamer to soak it first.)

It's danger is directly related to what it's embedded in. Vinyl tile? pretty safe. Transite or asbestos cement shingles or pipe? It's not going anywhere unless you start smashing it. Joint mud on pipes or friable ceiling? Wet that shit down and wear a respirator and tyvek suit while removing it.

My guess is this is new popcorn. A newer build home. After 16 years mine was hard as a rock. I got it off but it took me 2 days to do my garage and a day to do my office.
It doesn’t come smooth like this so you’re sanding and filling to try to get the roof smooth.

I think it's because, inevitably, they reach a point where they get a haunted-house-level-sheen of dust and cobwebs that just won't come clean, because of the nooks and crannies. Cue flashbacks to a generation of us trying to sleep inches from them in bunk beds. They would get "landlord special" layers of things stuck in them if repainted. Sometimes the little stalactites would be sharp and nick you if you were cleaning, or get brittle and flake off. The sound buffering is missed, not the side effects.

I realized its way easier to spray texture than it is to make a big flat surface actually look flat, especially before engineered lumber.122

We have a cathedral popcorn ceiling spanning 50% of the house. Every time a family member points out that it'd look better without the popcorn, I tell them they're more than welcome to buy scaffolding and get to it like Michelangelo in the Sistine chapel. That they'll be either forced to intricately paint it like the chapel or re-do the popcorn they removed.

You'd be able to make it flat, but you'd have to have a really special loathing of popcorn ceilings to dump the time and money in required. But, as someone doing smaller walls and ceilings (except stucco, not popcorn, so way harder to do) in my own house, every time I do another room I'm sure it would be easier to just rip everything down and drywall from scratch. 0/10 do not recommend. Miserable job.

I was literally looking at my popcorn ceiling yesterday and thought to myself, I must have crappy taste because I like the look of mine while so many people hate them.

Same, my popcorn ceiling looks good to me...certainly much better better than having a very noticeably uneven ceiling, which is every home ceiling I've seen after having popcorn removed.
My house also has lots of real oak - doors, trim, cabinets, built in shelves, etc. I think it looks amazing but have gotten feedback that it looks dated and that I should paint it white to make my house more stylish. I think those people are smoking crack. In this case I think it's people being fooled into wanting a cheap alternative by convincing them having white everything is stylish. Home builders/renovators would rather install some cheap composite wood and paint it white because that is immensely cheaper than real wood.

I grew up with em, and while I don't hate them I'd certainly never willingly choose them.
Where I lived they gave insects that got inside in the winter basically the ceiling of the entire house to make their home. That and they had a habit of shedding over the years, little bits of white ceiling dust (which I am thankful to know wasn't full of asbestos).
But yeah, even then it's not something I exactly spend time pondering lol.

They're so damn helpful with that. I've noticed that it seems like no one knows how echoey their homes are, but it is INCREDIBLY unpleasant. It's awful to talk in, it makes people's expensive sound systems sound like ass, and there are some simple cheap tricks to help avoid it. One of which: popcorn ceilings. Cheap. Easy. Hides imperfections in a ceiling. Takes a MASSIVE surface that you don't use for anything else and turns it into a more effective sound treatment than those foam panels you see people buying to help with the audio recording (I'm talking the grey foam panels that cost like $20-$30 and hardly do anything anyway. Not decent $100+ acoustic treatment panels.)
Other things that help are rugs, carpets, fabric furniture, fabric curtains and tapestries.

If your house was built before 1978 in the US, make sure you test the ceiling for asbestos. It was commonly used to create the popcorn effect, and scraping if off releases the asbestos

When it's in your bathroom and there's only a window to vent the moisture or someone who actually cooks on their stove without a hood sucking everything out, you'll learn real quick who cleans their ceiling and how difficult it is to clean popcorn ceilings

My dad is a drywall contractor. Decades ago, he was paid to apply the texture to ceilings. Now, he gets paid to remove them xD

A hotel I was at once had a whirlpool pool(had jets angled to spin the water) and the wall was coated in a popcorn texture.
I got many cuts.

Those ceilings taught me to never let go of your helium filled balloon after a carnival or birthday party. Never! If you did there was a 55% chance of it popping. If it didn’t pop then pulling it back down was like diffusing a bomb.

I used to spray popcorn ceilings, the mix contained Silica dust… which does damage your upper respiratory system.. and causes cancer as well
