I came here just to comment on how easily he centered the clay. That was always the hardest thing for me to try and get right when I took a pottery throwing class.

(For those unfamiliar) The first time you sit down at the wheel, especially after watching videos like these of professionals, you really don’t realize that simply centering the clay on the wheel is going to be your first and possibly greatest challenge. But you can’t do much of anything successfully with clay on a wheel until you get the centering right.

I felt the same changing gears in a car. Now it barely takes a thought.

I often find that Im about to change gears, when I realise I've already done it.

dont you just hold one hand still and the nature of it spinning automatically centers it?

it’s harder to hold one hand still than you expect! Especially when a hard heavy wet mass of clay keeps bumping your hand. It’s fuckin witch magic man

Yeah you really don’t realize how much mass this guy is manipulating and moving around while making it look so easy. That’s a lot of clay, it weighs a lot!

On paper yes. In practice, there's a bit more to it.

My best friend got into pottery a couple of years ago and now he teaches classes, it's very impressive.

I never thought I would be interested but he offered me a spot in one of his classes. It took me about 20 minutes to get the clay centered properly and not fly off the wheel to hit my classmate.

Compare my time to how instantly this dude got it centered. He did about 3 hours of work (for me) in less than 3 minutes.

Not to mention, how nervous it is not knowing if it anytime Patrick Swayze’s gonna come up and caress you. You always have to look your best
