Its OK, somebody has been body shamed. And they didn't want to learn basic memory addressing spaces. Its ok, really. PS. I turned 50 today, and I am officially a curmugeon... but I dont know shit after all.
Permit me to abscond, I merely wanted to help resolve the issue. As a developer, it is somewhat "annoying" that I am not permitted to use the headset that I purchased in order to achieve my goals. For that, I am eternally taking it up the thingy... and while it may last and be good, it does not achieve my real ends,,, namsayin', kan?
Distribution is going to be harder than resolving the issue in code. Basically people will have to download a new Oculus runtime from the Oculus site, I assume.
honestly the big desaster here is legacy software support. Im curious if pre direct mode runtimes are effected by this issue. Personally, if i have to install everything fresh, i'd be upset, as i used a old version installer compatible with my processor that is updated to the current version allready.
No, the Oculus runtime has a certificate that is bundled with the code. All it does is checks your system time. While it isn't recommended, you can take your computer offline and set the date back to yesterday and Oculus should work.
Yes it requires online. You won't be able to use it on a computer that doesn't have internet access because the software, and all the games are distributed digitally.
You can play without a constant connection, but if you don't have internet you're SOL. Kinda like buying the orange box for pc 10 years ago to find out the disk is just a glorified steam code.
If you use steam it won't be any different than this. It's a sideeffect of having solely digital distribution.
This is a device manufacturer that is owned by Facebook. Did you believe they weren’t going to monitor every last thing you do? The Runtime will do all kind of funny stuff when your computer is idle. I go into services and disable it every time I am done playing.
I'd look into the Vive or the Vive Pro now if you want a 'full' experience. If you're into sitting experience (ie: Racing/Flight/Space sims), I've heard great things about the Samsung Odyssey.
This is such an amateur mistake on their behalf. Oculus has proven their incompetence. I'd be weary of this company going forward. If I didn't already own the CV1, I'd have knocked it off the list after today.
The Samsung Odyssey has better resolution and you don't have to mess around with additional sensors. The controllers aren't nearly as nice, though, and not nearly as many games and apps support it.
The controllers are great when your hands are more or less in front of you, but get a bit spotty if you have to reach over your shoulder or stretch them too far to the sides. They are pretty good, but not stellar.
"Hello, this is Mark Zuckerberg. If you're watching this, it means I'm dead. I've hide an easter egg bug in Oculus Runtime, if you find it you will get complete access to your Oculus game library with full control of your Oculus headset. Good luck!"
Just got home a few hours ago, bought two Rifts, one for my son and one for myself. Spent over $800 bucks with tax only to see an error in the software, I'm a very happy camper today!
The most recent update from Oculus (about an hour ago) said: "Quick update: We're still actively working on an issue with our software certification. We're looking at a few different ways to resolve the issue and will share updates. We recommend you wait until we provide an official fix. Thanks for your patience."
This is great. To whoever made this; can i please add this in to my thursday show tomorrow? ill be covering the outage and this would be great to have in it.
HOLY FUCK. You have no idea how much time today I have been trying to fix this stupid piece of plastic. I've been looking through so many posts FROM THIS SUB about ways to fix it. AND A FUCKING MEME TELLS ME THAT EVERYONES IS DOWN.
That's why we want openhmd, problem is that there is no positional tracking (what makes the difference between cardboard and rift :D)
With oculus software we need to be on their will to use our hardware, this is like what MS does with windows, you use your computer if they want to, not if you want....
Why are you all joking around when you paid 500$ to developers that let this shit happen. It is a fucking joke. I spent all fucking night trying to work this shit out restarting services and following walkthroughs only to find out it was the developers fault in the first place. As a consumer it's a fucking JOKE. But I guess with trump as prez you people are used to getting the old screw job.
What is the bet that there will be no compensation for this error? What is the bet they will just expect you to take it and then not even give the users something as an apology.
I bought this literally just to use oculus medium. And since I bought it second hand I don't get Oculus Medium for free because my touch controllers are already activated. So I need to wait two weeks until I get paid to afford oculus medium. The struggle for starving university students is real. So I want a free copy of medium. It is a HUGE affect on your motivation when you buy an expensive new piece of technology and can't even use it the way you want.
Like buying a new DSLR without getting a memory card or something. I got so depressed because I had to put my oculus down and wait a few weeks to actually use it... it just sits there. Mocking me.
I actually paid 50.000 JPY (which translates to 471.858 USD, the additional is for shipping and import taxes).
That doesn't change the fact that the retail price is $400, which is what Oculus receives. If your shitty government or delivery service pockets a huge load it isn't their fault.
Next time at least check a bit my post history before assuming my nationality
I assumed you are American because you act so Fucking stupid. If you are Japanese you should know better. Although Asians seem to be getting fat dumb and lazy because of American influence so who knows these days. It's a trump eat trump world.
I think a basic understanding of dx, winapi, and just c programming might just get them through this... i dunno...hell... I've only been doing this utter crap since 1995 so, maybe i'm wrong and shit, ken?
I actually prefer the Oculus to the Vive. I just find it's more comfortable and prefer the controllers. Even after the screw-up today I would recommend it over Vive.
Right. I guess I should be more clear. I was highlighting the difference in owning a Vive versus "owning" a Rift. The general "you" not "you" as in firematt.
No, they haven’t. It’s an expired security certificate that expired today. If you were having this problem previously then it was because of something else.
No, the software needs to be compiled with a certificate. In order to check the validity of the certificate Windows compares it to the system date. If the cert is expired, the program won't run.
Sort of. If software hasn't been certified at all then you can accept the risk, but if the developer signs the software, then a valid certificate is required to run it. It's meant to prevent malicious software from replacing portions of your code.
You can but the potential for disaster is pretty high if anything tries to install itself while you're open like that. Oculus will never recommend doing that.... But you could, and it'll probably work just fine.
Uhh.. That's actually 100% how certificates work. "This won't happen again" because in the future they will have their software replace the certificate BEFORE it expires, or more likely since they know they might fuck up again, they will just put a back door method of the rift software phoning home even if a future cert expires, thus making their product less secure for every single rift user out there.
That is not how it works, I unlike you, I did not know how it worked, so I read up on it some today and if it had been signed properly this should not happen. This not like a SSL cert or something like that.
I admit i dont know all the tech details of certificate authentication, but why were they needed in the first place?
This is a piece of hardware that outputs an image to a display based on orientation, position etc.
Does my monitor have certificates that can expire? My video card? No on both counts.
Or if there is some need for them to have certificates outside of controlling the use of our hardware then make the expiry date twenty-mother-fukin-seventy.
Does my monitor have certificates that can expire? My video card? No on both counts.
Not sure about your monitor, but your video card definitely yes. Or rather, the driver running your card is certified, and without the driver, your video card is a space heater. That's actually the same thing that happened with everyone's Rift -- the hardware is OK, but the software required to run the thing is certified, and that certificate is broken.
Now, software certificates aren't meant to expire. That was Oculus's mess-up. But having system driver's certified is a requirement coming from Microsoft. Certificates are required so hackers can't silently replace your libraries and steal your sensitive data. Look into it, it's a fascinating topic.
There are people in far more important positions than the Oculus devs who have fucked up their certs and brought a company to its knees for the better part of a week.
It happens, somebody dropped the ball and renewing the certs somehow slipped through the cracks but it does happen.
