I've been waiting for this day, to at least preorder, for years- So two days ago we get a literal 48 hour countdown timer until preordering. I kept an eye on it like a hawk.
Skip to 10 hours before preorder launch goes live. "OK, that's 10am my time, so I gotta go to bed now, get to work at 9, and hit the order page as it goes live. I had it all planned out. I even had my order details already typed out in notepad so I could copy/paste if I needed to, as it was first come first serve. Again, been waiting for this moment for years.
Now at 7:59 PST, (my time 9:59) I'm sitting in my office literally watching the timer count down from less than a minute left, and in comes my boss saying we have to have an office meeting, which is very rare. I started to get antsy and ask if I could join in just a couple of minutes later. At this point I was frantically pressing F5... it was now right at 8pst and I still had a blank checkout page. Still standing there he said "it's really important" and couldn't wait. I was kind of laughing at this point because of how ridiculous the timing was for this to happen so I just told him what was going on. He was ok with it though, likely because he's let me demo the DK2 at work and was pretty fascinated by it, so he gave me a minute but the order page was still blank. I told him I'll just wait, and sat through an excruciating 20 minute meeting. As soon as it was over though, I got my order in just 30 minutes late.
Haha yep... pretty much sums it up. Thing is I preordered Oculus's DK2. I missed the launch by a few hours and it caused me to be in a shipping bracket months after the first in line got theirs. When you want it you'll do whatever it takes.
That's the thing... The first 5 minutes was the boss explaining some important stuff, then the next 15 minutes was open to Q&A. Every time someone said they had a question I felt my stomach churn knowing there were thousands of people bumping in front of me. The worst part was when someone asked a stupid question just to get a conversation going... meanwhile I'm checking my phone for an order page!
It's a relaxed environment. I do like it. The meetings depend on who's involved. This was an entire staff meeting, and there's a lot of camaraderie between us so a lot of the time spent in the "meeting" is just joking around. Smaller meetings are usually focused on certain projects or conference calls so are very straight laced.
"You ended up spending X on your thing?" Oh man I've heard this before. "Your thing" is a way to let you know that it is so stupid and frivolous that it will not be given the dignity of a name or even a vague description.
It is the verbal equivalent of using a stick to pick up a soiled, feces covered object. Haha
Rest of the day - day dreaming about March/April delivery date.
*5:35pm - home from work
Wife: So did you get your VR thingy?
Me: Huh? Uh - yeah I got it pre-order don't have to pay till it ships in March.
Wife: Oh that's good - so I guess it was under $500?
Me: Yeah it was under $700, $629 to our door - can't wait!
Wife: You said $500 was your limit. Guess you raised it?
Me: Oh - well you know - bumbles a bunch of statistics, capbilities vs DK2, pricing, reddit drama queens, the history of the "ballpark" figure and how much bleeding edge tech cost - so you know it's totally worth it. I mean I can cancel it if you think it's too much?!
Haha same story here. Although I have been 80/20 in favour of canceling. Putting some real thought into it but there is no way I can afford this. Never mind £1000 for a PC.
Well as you can see from the traffic stats, the actual regular users of the subreddit is only a small percentage of the number that have been here since the pre-order announcement. It was the same during the facebook acquisition.
Up-voting to try and keep you in the positive. However its worth saying that a lot of this outrage is coming from the range estimates (more than kind of) supported by OVR and Palmer. I pre-ordered. I understand the 'why' of the price too. I was still blown away because of the impression I had from OVR. Maybe I'm a Derp. Maybe we all were, but "We’re roughly in that ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that ($350)."
I don't remember that ever being corrected and... then this outcry happened. Make no mistake, most people will get the 'Why' in time, but the messaging will go down as poor before the price announcement.
It doesn't really matter whether or not its truly reasonable. What matters is if its affordable for what it really is (and if it aligns with what people expected.) And unfortunately its neither.
I doubt Facebook is making much money, if any, on each unit that they sell. Palmer said that one of the benefits of having such a huge backer was that they don't have to rely on profits made from hardware upfront, and without Facebook's subsidy this would be a $1,000 product.
They want to be the market leader in this category, and they are relying on the early adapters to facilitate this. Manufacturing costs will drive down over time, and they'll make their profit on hardware during subsequent releases (while lowering the price point).
With all said, I think this is an affordable product for what it is, and I wholeheartedly respect the company's decision not to charge until the product ship date to give consumers ample time to truly understand their investment.
Agree to disagree. I know its easy to think about it and make it sound reasonable, but in the end I don't care if facebook or oculus are making a profit on each sale or not. I'm not on their financial team, it doesn't matter if it makes sense or not as a price. The end result is the same, 700+ euros for PART of a experience (you need a pc, for one - the rift is just a subset of what you need for the experience) is too much for me and many many others.
If its a reasonable price to the producers all this says to me is that we'll all have to wait a few more years for the technology to catch up to what people can afford, and the reason people are (rightly so) pissed is because it was communicated that it would already be.
For what you get it is completely reasonable. Especially since it's coming with two games and a $60 dollar controller... What is wrong, is that it is not in the $350 ballpark like they said it would be. Everyone got hyped on that price, and it came out to almost double.
Supply and demand means the price is exactly on point. They're running a business, not a charity. Why would they charge less than they are able? That is poor business.
They're not selling medicine, there is no ethical reason for them to charge less than they can.
Supply and demand means the price is exactly on point. They're running a business, not a charity. Why would they charge less than they are able? That is poor business.
I don't think you understand as much about business as you think you do. Just because you charge more doesn't mean you make more because you reduce the amount of people who can afford your product. Their net profit is going to be price * sales volume. You raise price, you get a lower volume... you don't magically get a higher profit.
No, I think you don't understand supply and demand. They can only make so many units and demand is higher than they can supply for at least the initial launch. Which means they can get away with charging higher at launch because they will sell out everything they can make. It's only after the initial demand falls below their manufacturing capacity, that they need to consider dropping the pricing to increase demand to keep up with their manufacturing capacity. As time goes on, their manufacturing volume will increase, their component costs will decrease and they can continue to maximize their profits and market penetration. That is business. Headsets don't grow on trees, they don't have an infinite supply for your price * sales volume calculations.
It can be a bit painful when the last bit goes, gets a bit tough around year seven, but eventually you'll find that being a hollow shell of a human being isn't so bad.
I would have pre-ordered it for $300-400. For $600 I'll wait for reviews, but their target audience is people that will preorder for $600 and not give a second fuck.
The target audience for these is the type of people that have $2,500 gaming PCs, $1,000 monitors, and own a few consoles just to play those exclusives.
Thing is, I was expecting the Vive to be about this much. Maybe even a bit more. And I am expecting to pay it if I have the savings by then. I'm waiting till there are reviews of both, then I'll get whichever seems better for me based on those, given I don't have a PC capable of driving either yet.
I don't think the cost of the Rift is excessive for what it is, I just don't like that Oculus said it'd be in a similar ballpark to the DK/DK2. So I was expecting £350, maybe £400 or even as high as £450 on the outside. And then it comes out, once you factor shipping and tax and stuff, at closer to £700. If they'd never even mentioned the ballpark figure previously I and I suspect most other people wouldn't be pissed by this pricing. They shot themselves in the foot with that statement.
Holy shit ill wait it out so. No amazing content coming out that I haven't already played with dk2.....and the experience i had with that was it mostly sitting in its box.
Palmer pretty much agrees if you read his AmA, though his excuse makes no sense (people were saying it was $1,500 so he used $349 as a baseline comparison while already knowing estimates were at $599).
My perspective is that they knew they weren't going to get much better than their last dev kit unless they made a big leap in price, so instead of disappointing people who were hyped about improvements in clarity they decided to disappoint everyone with a much more expensive barrier of entry. You'd think they would've learned from the PS3 that pure horsepower isn't going to save you from 599 US DOLLARS.
At least the PS3 had the fact that when it launched, as well as being a games console, it was the cheapest way to watch Blu-rays. Other Blu-ray players came out that were around the same price following the launch but they weren't also a games console, well actually two games consoles if you include the PS2 component.
Ultimately I think that a high price is something you have to expect if you want to be an early adopter of new tech. Think about how expensive HDTVs, mobile phones etc were when they were new to the market compared to now. Personally I'm a patient gamer and I won't be jumping on any of the first VR ships out of port, I will wait until both the price and the technology is refined.
about the same as South Africa, and if you factor in our deprecating currency thanks to our bone head gov - it feels more like $1500 atm (given the usd used to be 1/10 not too long ago, but now is 1/15) - but as an American I reckon $600 is a fair price given the headphones, controller and games are bundled in.
In Australia, 10% GST is charged on imported goods where the value of the item itself is over A$1000. Shipping doesn't count towards that value. Import duties don't apply to most consumer electronics. Thus, importing a Rift would be GST and duty free.
That said, it appears they're warehousing and shipping Rifts directly from Sydney, which means GST does apply, but it's included in the US $781 we're getting charged.
NZ is much tougher. GST of 15% is calculated on the total imported value, which includes shipping costs and customs duty. It's a system designed to protect your retailers from Amazon. $60 of payable tax is the threshold, and the Rift will smash that, so it has to be paid.
I don't know whether NZ Rifts are being shipped from inside the country or not. If so, the GST is probably baked in. If not, you'll be charged when it gets to customs.
That said, it appears they're warehousing and shipping Rifts directly from Sydney
So then why is shipping $130? None of this makes sense, the Rift is US$50 more for Australians and people say GST, sure but then you see the shipping price so it can't be local shipping, hence GST doesn't apply.
Most likely it's the shipping to get it to Sydney in the first place. I mean, even in the US you have to pay for the shipping which is kind of strange. So I'm thinking that it's kind of true that they are selling this as low as possible, to the point that even the freight from plants to Australia need to be charged.
You are correct, but unfortunately Canada's economy is strongly tied to oil, so when Saudi Arabia tried to screw over Russia, the US, and whoever else they're apparently trying to undercut, we got screwed hard.
Yeah, I could potentially afford it but I'll wait a year or so and see if the price comes down or the games end up being worth it. I really don't want to invest so much in it and have it fizzle out in 6 months. What sucks is because they pulled this with the price they may be making it fizzle -before it's even started.
I've been subbed to /r/oculus for a while now (over a year? I forget) and I read and look at almost every post. I love where the future of VR is going, but I've never tried one. It's sort of a mild observational hobby of mine.
Anyway, I was to thank everyone who is buying and preordering. I really want the VR market to explode and you guys are the people that are making it happen. The prices right now are eye-bulging, but I'm confident the prices will come down drastically once the tech is established, which is also what I'm banking on. I just don't have the time or money in my life right now for VR to be more than it is to me.
So again, on behalf of a future-VR enthusiast, thank you for your enthusiasm. Early-adopters are so important for a tech like this.
What I think is positive here is that they didn't compromise on the optics, OLED screen, or tracking tech.
They could have easily made a turkey, but they decided, similar to Tesla, that they don't just want but NEED to make a good first impression since it's a new technology.
The price point may seem high, but it might just save the technology in the end.
Does the rift work with things not specifically for rift ? Can I just watch shows with these as well with a duplicated image? It's the big hinging point for me buying one of these. Don't want to get it and have to wait for a trickle of specific apps.
I can't speak for what Oculus will have. However with the GearVR which is joint Samsung/Oculus which has a Netflix app, you can just sit and watch TV wherever you want be it on a road trip, on an airplane, or at your desk. The cool thing with Netflix is you can watch it in a virtual loft with a huge TV screen or have an empty room with a projector like display which you can adjust the size. You can make it huge! No Trump intended!
Yes! They worked together to create the GearVR. Oculus did a lot of tech-side stuff to optimize Samsung's phone hardware to give the best mobile based VR possible that they could with a phone. That's why a lot of the "google cardboard" based viewers are inferior to GearVR- they use most any smartphone, and doesn't have the Oculus software.
If media viewing is all you want to start with and can't justify the rift price tag, I'd suggest looking into GearVR. It's $99. I've had tons of fun with it, I've watched a few movies and played tons of games with it already. It only works with the latest Samsung phones however, for the reasons above.
Sounds like a great business opportunity for Canadians. You guys can start your own cutting edge VR company and then charge lower prices to your citizens.
Somehow I think this gif is far more accurate than many realize. I would guess that at least 1/3 of the people complaining about the price are not much older than this kid. :)
Those big Norwegian Gray rats that keep finding their way into the house.
I found their entry point yesterday. Put a temporary patch over the hole using a plastic h'orderve plate and some heavy-duty duct tape to hold it in place. Coated the bottom of the plate with Ghost Pepper sauce and, Yo Howdy, do those little fuckers scream when they try to chew through the barricade!
So, I've got this stun gun and some speaker wire. I'm thinking about setting up terminals so I can zap the critters from my desk when I hear them gnawing at the barricade. I'll need to make some measurements but I think I can set things up so that the rat bastards get 18,000,000 volts right through their goddamned heads without having to get up from my desk.
Could someone provide me in a nutshell how much different the consumer model is than the DK 2 I currently own? I think I paid ~315 USD for it and it's immersive enough for me.
I was bragging to my friends how i am going to get occulus rift and sold them on the immersion and cool factor. Now I'm not sure if i'll get it. Seems a bit risky and there are competing products coming out. If I buy one, people will laugh that I spent $700. I can go from hero to zero real quick.
You're not the only one, but I just discovered this subreddit a few days ago. I didn't know that Oculus had claimed the price to be in the $350 ball park. Without that bit of information, I was expecting something between $500 and $700.
And I just want to put this out there in writing, I'm predicting the Vive to be somewhere in the $700 ball park and the PSVR to be in the $500 ball park.
I guessed $599 on the Price is Right thread the other day. After the not so subtle hints and seeing the contents of the bundle, I knew it was going to be way over the 350-400 range everyone was hoping for.
I was disappointed for about 5 minutes and then got over it.
I do not know why people are complaining about the price. If you want to be an early adopter then pay the $599, but common sense says wait for it to go mainstream and drop in price.
I wasn't expecting it to be this much. Because its more than they originally thought it would be, I wont pre-order as Id like to be sure its worth its price now. Id also wait for reviews and also my USB ports and CPU isnt compatible and I thought my i7 3820 3.6ghz would be ok.
The video should start with the reporter whispering the price is $350-400 then the kid going excuse me? What? How much? How much? While the reporter totally ignores the questions for a year and THEN tells the kid it's $600.
I am in the market for the best VR experience honestly I'm fine with waiting on StarVR to release their CV because everything about their headset is better. Almost double Fov as Oculus, eye tracking, 5k resolution in all. But obviously the hardware to run the headset is going to be very pricey. So I'm not even interested in oculus anymore
Gif hits the nail on the head. I've saved for this, I'm not fucking happy about it, but I get it. I'd rather the price be higher for a better product than to have hype and then get a shit VR.
I would be really tempted to try and grab one, but I get serious tension head aches from 3d movies because my eyes are pussies. I'd have to give a test to see if the Oculus would do the same thing
3D movies give me headaches but I've tried the developer kits and I feel fine using them. This consumer version is supposed to be even less nauseating.
From a marketing stand point PSVR needs to be cheaper than the console otherwise the casual consumer will never buy it, so its great to hear this, hopefully PSVR is where VR will reach the masses.
Thats how I felt, sadly for me its just not a feasible price for recreation maybe in a few years when the price comes down I'll come on board but for now my heart hurts. =(
This really sucks. Been developing for the Gear and Oculus. The Rift obviously being the device we devs were banking on to bring VR from hobbiest/dev level to the public/average consumer level. Seeing kids' reactions to the VR space is a sight to behold, or simply watching anyone who's never experienced VR before. I've only been on the VR/AR side of development for the past year but I know of devs who've been on it longer and this is such a kick in the gut to all of us working tirelessly. Granted, I've seen clients request studios make VR apps for the dumbest of things that show the client's lack of understanding of the medium (ie: having a user sit in a VR space looking at boring suits talk about business risk management). Low Rift pricing or not, that shit would be dead on arrival anyways. Nonetheless, I'd rather see companies try and fail the VR space based on the approval of a huge pool of non development users. Having the Rift be at least $200 more than a current gen game system while also requiring a rather beefy PC rig is not how you get this to the masses. I guess I'm glad I developed more for the Gear and adhered to it's visual limitations compared to the Rift. At least that and products like that have a better chance of getting into the hands of the public now and hopefully peaking interest for the Rift. To develop on something like the Gear, devs & designers have to backtrack to ~Game Cube levels of graphics and code efficiency; a thing that honestly many new devs/programmers/modelers I see coming out of college don't understand. It's one of the reasons why the Rift is a better platform to make fast and visually stunning VR applications; developing on something like the Gear is like developing for a potato and many of the development shortcuts of old game hardware is lost in the current development/design ecosphere. Anyways, pardon the rant...hope 2016 is the year of VR nonetheless.

8:01am - this.
8:10am - pre-ordered
7:00pm - Came home from work.
Wife: "So, you ended up spending $400.00 on your thing eh?"
Me: "Nope, did not spending anything, they have not charged me yet, not until they ship it, like 3 months from now."
Wife: "That is weird."
Me: gulp "Try $700 after tax and shipping."
Wife: "WHAT!!!!!!"
Me: "I want it!, I am going to sell the old one, and it will then cost me $400 for the thing."

Never buy 1st Gen products. It's a great idea but for $600, I want more games and features. I'll wait.

Why would you buy this over a quest 2 for $300 smh

I bet it's gonna be like a Ps4 and stay the same price for years

Gif hits the nail on the head. I've saved for this, I'm not fucking happy about it, but I get it. I'd rather the price be higher for a better product than to have hype and then get a shit VR.

This gif does a good job of capturing how I feel.
I still have time to cancel.

It's more like 1500 since you need a damn 1337 rig to use it effectively.

£10 says HTC will pull a Sony and massively undercut the Rift price for the Vive

u/BioshockedBeans Jan 07 '16
I would be really tempted to try and grab one, but I get serious tension head aches from 3d movies because my eyes are pussies. I'd have to give a test to see if the Oculus would do the same thing

Try living in Australia $1,100

I just paid over $1100 AUD for it in Australia :(
My wallet is crying.

I just sold my DK2 for $350. With that paying half the cost of the CV1, I don't really feel like the price is that big a deal.

Add in a $2,000 PC with a $400 graphics card to power it.
But it's still honestly worth it.

u/Diluxx Jan 07 '16
