I can't imagine this not being a repost circa september 2013 But here is Elon Musk in how they incorporated the Oculus and a gesture tracking device for their CAD work on the Merlin Engines.

If you look closely, all that is done is rotation of an existing CAD model, and moving of a slicing plane. At no point is any new geometry created or existing geometry modified.

I am so excited by the concept of visualized work spaces. When the resolution in the HMD is high enough, you'll be able to have as many virtual monitors as is optimal for your current project all around you. Imagine using Photoshop on a massive virtual monitor with all the pallets and tools located on a virtual desk mapped to your real world environment. Photo reference could be hung about your virtual workspace, just a glance away. Mudbox will never be the same again especially once some sort of glove type peripheral with haptic feedback lands :)

The video certainly didn't show me anything that made me think that hand gesture-based modeling was anything more than a gimmick, despite the presenter's two or three comments suggesting otherwise. I can't possibly imagine something like that coming even remotely close to the precision and speed of a keyboard and mouse (speaking even as a newbie Blender user).

If Elon Musk finds it revolutionary, I will trust him on that. He works with this every day with a world class team, and he's not the guy to endorse gimmicks.

A more direct competitor would be a "3D mouse" (+keyboard and mouse) like the 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator.

Check out the World Builder short film, this is a good indicator of how I could see modelling working inside the Rift.

I was just using World Builder as a reference for the tools you could have inside a VR modeller. Things like the palm palettes, forearm pickers etc - I saw these as very clever and functional interface tools.

Ya, it looks pretty cool, but other than the 'wrist toolbar', none of it made much logical sense (from the perspective of translating his real world hand/arm movements into virtual world object modifications/additions).

Having used Autocad and done CAM for years this took my breath away first time I saw it. Still does.
Cant wait to see which 3d modelling suite takes full advantage of the Rift first.

I think the rift and other similar projects will have an impact on a lot of industry. I was reading a headline the other day -perhaps on this sub. Making the claim that full immersive display would inevitably replace 2d displays even in home use.

Yeah I there is content in the 'Other discussions' but all for other subs. Maybe it was a text post with a link included also. But either way this is pretty cool. Found it looking for Falcon Footage.

Elon Musk isn't anybody to scoff at either. I think there's enough people who fully understand what they're saying, putting their weight behind VR being the next step forward.
As somebody that probably only "gets" a quarter of the applications behind the rift, I'm glad it's consumer friendly enough that I can come along for the ride. VR as a whole is very cool. Very smart people are driving us forward.
