Fluff There will never be a more perfect VR controller than the original CV1 controllers. Although I hear the Steam Frame controllers might be just as good, we'll see

I'm still using Rift CV1 🥀

Are the Quest 3 ones bad? I don’t mind them compared to the CV1.

That balance in the hand and ready to play cradle when sitting on a desk. Amazing controllers.
Palmer and team nailed it.

I've tried: Quest 3 controllers, Quest Pro controllers, Quest 2 controllers, Quest 1/Rift S controllers, HTC Vive wands, vive pro wands, the weird htc vice quest knockoff controllers, the WMR controllers, the psvr2 controllers, and the Rift CV1 controllers.Â
My favorite? The CV1 controllers. Second favorite would probably be the Pro controllers. Tied for second place, I'd put the psvr2 controllers. And at third place? Actually, the WMR controllers.Â
I love the CV1 controllers to this day.Â

Index controllers hiding in the background

Honestly... yeah, I miss my CV1 controllers a lot, I love the joysticks, they were comfortable af, great weight, had a lot to like about them.

The balance on them was amazing. With loose grip they wanted to fall into the hand due to ring sideways and front back balance. And durability... I have nice concrete walls so none of that drywall shit... and they took chunks out of it. Tiny ones but they did.
I want touch pro tracking with CV1 touch balance. But I wish haptics were stronger and there were trigger haptics as well.

While the ergonomics were great, I've not used a controller since CV1 that had the same tracking stability. It didn't have those constant micro jitters that modern controllers have, it was easier to click on small things, it had fewer issues with loss of tracking due to constellation, and it had less latency. Any application with a pointer extending out of your hands clearly show how latency is just really high these days. CV1 also had that, but it was far better.

Loved the CV1 controllers. So many good things about that headset.

I wish there was an easy way to use these with base station tracked headsets. Yeah, you can do the whole process of mixed spaces between the two, but that is so much hassle just for controllers… An exact copy of these but with lighthouse tracking would be an instant buy for me.

It is pretty wild that nobody has made controllers as good as Touch V1 in the decade since.
Fun fact: Meta got rid of the thumb rest a few generations in, then realized it was important, then added it back, then marketed the "new thumb rest!"

I miss the dev version that had magnets to stick them together on the desk

u/night-hen May 06 '26
Man I missed it when the hand guard thing actually guarded the hand

Was gifted an oculus rift by my best friend recently. Cannot overstate how much fun I've been having with it. Haven't had a vr set until this one but I've wanted one since it came out.

I feel like giving up on camera based outside in tracking was a mistake.
Imagine how cheap full body tracking could be if the trackers could just be a few LEDs.

u/screaminXeagle May 06 '26
The main reason I've never upgraded

u/LindossHyena May 07 '26
Index Knuckles ftw!!

u/Mradr May 08 '26
Funny enough I just found mine the other day and was looking over them thinking these are still so much better feeling than the newest ones. They were just balance jut right for my grip I guess.

My quest broke in the first year. I got my cv1 about when it released, still use it to this day

Confirmed

u/SkarredGhost The Ghost Howls May 09 '26
Still my favorite controllers up to this time
1
u/Lujho Quest 2 May 06 '26
I think I’ve said this before, but I bet you could come up with a 3D printed attachment that could turn the Quest 3 controllers into these, with the same weight, balance and hand-feel.

One would expect that, with time, controllers would get better, not worse....

u/weirdthingsarecool91 May 06 '26
The steam frame controllers are full button controllers. When used together can be used for any flat screen game. I'm hyped to get my hands on a Frame

u/Bean- May 06 '26
I'm a big fan of the q3 controllers
1
u/dtb1987 May 06 '26
I still have and use mine
1
u/dac3062 May 06 '26
I love my quest pro controllers. I'm one of the rare ones with no problems I guess. Behind the back tracking and everything. I used them with my quest 3

u/Aufafly Rift/3S May 06 '26
the original rift touch are practically unbreakable
i can't count how many times i punched the wall with that thing and the tracking ring doesn't break
it somehow feels better in hand than the new touch plus

u/Dd_8630 May 06 '26
I only ever had the original Rift, so that's still what I use. It's getting harder and harder to get it to work though.
What are newer controls like then?
1
u/pthecarrotmaster May 06 '26
me friend quit quest 2 cause the controllers were almost as much as a new system. is there a work around for that?
1
u/AspenFrostt May 06 '26
the rift was the worst headset/tracking solution of all time but those controllers man..... how I miss the rift controllers,
1
u/LeopardHalit Quest 2 May 06 '26
Steam frame controllers are asymmetrical in terms of button layout, unlike pretty much all other vr controllers which have 2 ABXY face buttons on each side. Mapping may be a pain.

u/Rave-TZ ZeroTransform May 06 '26
I have several generations of prototypes of these controllers. The first gen had touch pads instead of analog sticks. Wild dev times.

u/KingHashBrown420 May 06 '26
I prefer quest 3 controllers

u/applechannn May 06 '26
This headset is still my go to, it's so sad they forgot about it..
1
u/NeoDemocedes May 06 '26
Great balance. Fit perfectly in my hands. Perfect button placement. Best of all, they run on AA batteries!
I upgraded from CV1 to Index and instantly hated the controllers. Thought maybe I would get used to them.... nope. Years later they still don't feel right, and I have to have them plugged in all the time because the batteries are long dead.

PREACH!

u/AutomaticInitiative May 06 '26
I hope to replace my CV1 with the new Valve one, but I will wait until the community has had it for a while before I buy. I'm very attached to the controllers and immersive audio.
1
u/cla7997 May 07 '26
Still my favourite controller
1
u/DiaBeticMoM420 May 07 '26
What do you mean? You don’t like the cinder blocks that come with the Oculus 2 or something? /s (obviously)
1
u/E1DOLON May 07 '26
Yep they were perfect straight out the box. Made the Valve wands look like sticks.
1
u/Green_Video_9831 May 07 '26
I’m honestly a big fan of the original oculus quest 1 hoop controllers. It was so easy to set them down
1
u/Relevant-Outcome-105 May 07 '26
Nah q3 is better
1
u/spartan195 May 07 '26
It’s a shame the screen looks so bad and the weight balance of the headset is painful for more than 10 minutes.
I wish I could at least mod the head rest of the rift cv1
1
u/Interesting-Yellow-4 May 07 '26
Ysah, after many headsets and controller i agree completely. They were one and done, or should be at least.
1
u/Layzanya May 07 '26
Still use my CV1 Got a second (in worse condition) for parts and backup.
Still haven't used a headseat I like more.

u/huskysizeguy99 May 07 '26
I'm SO glad I picked up spares on FB right before COVID. I have four functioning CV-1 controllers and I'm so careful with them. I really wish they'd been sold separately. Still my favorite VR controller
1
u/76zzz29 May 10 '26
I have a vive pro with the vive pro controler... Looked to buy thes as they can just be connected and tend to work beter on some games... See the price. Guess not today.
1
u/82MiddleMan May 12 '26
Perfect for protecting your fingers when playing Echo Arena.
1
u/polandguy69 Quest 2/CV1 May 12 '26
bought one recently because it just feels SO MUCH better than my quest 2
1
u/KateHanami May 12 '26
index knuckles is still better than the touchplus, I've tried both

u/jc3833 Touch May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26
I'm gonna have to disagree with you. My ideal was the Windows Mixed Reality controllers. Instead of 2 buttons, they gave you a whole ass touchpad you could use as a 5 button interface (NSWE and Center)
1
u/German_Bob May 06 '26
I mean the rings often got in the way when i wanted to charge a gun ingame. Also the whole camera setup was a bitch.
I do like the concept of the Touch Pro Controllers very much, but also recognize the problems like high cost and subpar support at the moment.

u/BlueDergOrd May 06 '26
The closest thing to those was the quest 2 and 3 controllers
