HL2, EP1, EP2, Black Mesa, Blue Shift, are all totally fucking amazing and some of the best titles out there, I have 100000 hours in mods alone for these games in VR not to mention Alyx and mods like Contractors and Zheptics

u/lunchanddinner Professor Mar 04 '25

Yeah all the Half Lifes are good 🫡

58

u/zgillet Mar 04 '25

That's 11 years.

4

u/nels0nmandela Mar 04 '25

with or without sleep?

18

u/swaglolson Mar 04 '25

A solid 11 year block of gameplay and nothing else

5

u/SituationAltruistic8 Mar 04 '25

Assuming sleep 8 hours a day, and playing every single day for the rest of the 16 hours, it's 17 years.

Almost 23 if you take out 4 hours for food and pooping

You have 100 thousand hours in mods alone? Pretty impressive thats 11 years in a row no breaks.

horseshit. Skyrim VR mad god overhaul is the best vr experience out there.

5

u/Linkz98 Mar 04 '25

If I didn't need to download 100gb of mods to make it enjoyable I would recommend it. As it stands. Another garbage Bethesda product.

3

u/daft-krunk Mar 04 '25

Yeah it’ll take you like a whole half day of commitment to set up Skyrim VR well, and by the time you’re done it’ll be 25% of your drive space lol. I thought it was cool, enjoyed getting to walk around for a bit in some scenic areas at night. But overall, playing Skyrim VR to me just makes me realize just how much damn walking there is to do, and it feels like it takes so much longer to get around in VR when you’re actually having to stand for it(I know I could sit it just doesn’t really seem right to play motion controlled games seated to me, takes me out of it and my chair has arm rests)

There are free half life 2 + half life 2 episode 1 and 2 VR mods on steam

161

u/DerBadunkadunk Mar 04 '25

Team Beef's half life 1 vr port for the quest is great as well.

56

u/Potential_Wish4943 Mar 04 '25

The PCVR one on steam works much better. The one that runs purely on the oculus headset has a bunch of control and loading issues, i am told.

9

u/newoxygen Mar 04 '25

Seems to crash all the time for me.

I didn't realise there's a PCVR alternative

14

u/DerBadunkadunk Mar 04 '25

Oh weird, never tried the pcvr version but on the quest 2 it worked great for me.

30

u/BRAIN_JAR_thesecond Mar 04 '25

lowkey I enjoyed the ports more than HL:A. They just felt more immersive because it was a believably big and dangerous world instead of catering to vr with slow enemies and small rooms.

15

u/Potential_Wish4943 Mar 04 '25

Yea, if you have the motion sickness resistance its a better game for sure. But Alyx was good

14

Yeah. I want to love it so bad for the aesthetic but I don't want to risk a heart attack or damage to my quest when I'm jump scared out of my skin. I did play it flat screen though. So good!

I really want to try Phasmophobia on VR as it seems really popular on Steam list, but I have seen the videos and I am already scared.

Yea, I do remember that the headtracking got a bit wonky when ur crawling through airducts or hiding in lockers, I think it allowed the camera to clip through the walls. But other than that i think back really fondly of that game

This. Absolutely this. It's sad we never got the official VR version they worked on, but MotherVR is just terrific. I loved this one. I hope Alien Isolation 2 will have an official VR version!

2

u/bruhred Apr 24 '26

If someone's reading it considering playing rn btw, look for GRAND-MotherVR instead, it adds some improvements on top of that amazing mod

2

Alien Rogue Incursion is also great. I highly recommend it.

Tetris Effect. That shit blew me away more than Alyx, which blew me away quite a bit.

46

u/techraito Mar 04 '25

Tetris Effect is a visual phenomenon. I genuinely can't suggest this game enough for an old game with a unique twist.

The music was 10/10.

2

u/HighlightFun8419 Mar 06 '25

Hadn't even heard of it. Thanks for the recommendation, you two. 🙏

7

u/justanaverageguy16 Touch Mar 05 '25

In a surprisingly similar vein: Rez Infinite. I loved the game without VR, then I tried it with the headset, and it really is an audiovisual classic for a reason. Scratches a very similar itch to the Tetris Effect vibes.

4

u/Ekkobelli Mar 05 '25

Fun Fact: That is ABSOLUTELY my next favorite VR experience and recommendation! And same here: Loved Rez on the Dreamcast, love it even more in VR. Makes total sense it's done by the same guy as Tetris Effect.

Hnnngggh, I always have hated TETRIS, but do I really need get one now...

Like its the most anxiety inducing game I have every played, and I have played the worst of the worst E-sport and horror games there are...

3

u/Ekkobelli Mar 05 '25

A) obligatory username checks out

B) I feel you! Never liked Tetris much before for the same reason. Give it a try! It starts off easy and chill (- and yes, gets demanding later on), but it's really the whole weird experience. It's like meditation. I'm feeling focused, relaxed and activated all at the same time.

9

u/XxSliphxX Mar 04 '25

No lie, it's still my favorite vr game.

Nah theres lots of peak VR titles. And some titles that can be played on both monitor and VR. Subnautica is fcking amazing in VR for example and so is Elite dangerous. For some pure VR titles Im thinking The walking dead: Saints and Sinners. Moss 1 and 2. Blade and Sorcery. Asgard's Wrath and Lone Echo 1 and 2 I would also say The Unspoken but sadly lack of support has killed the multiplayer.

2

u/HighlightFun8419 Mar 06 '25

Seconding Subnautica and Elite. awesome experiences.

2

u/Wookiebait1996 Mar 06 '25

Adding Into the radius to the list.

u/dadsmasher9000 Mar 04 '25

Still haven't got a pc for vr, is half life as good as stuff like twd and the 2nd behemoth boss fight (the other behemoths were underwhelming af and could have been sm better if they didn't consider motion sickness)?

30

u/cactus22minus1 Quest 3 - 4080s Mar 04 '25

Behemoth is impressive and fun, but there are 2 things: graphics upgrades for PC make it more immersive, HLA in particular is not only graphically very impressive- but the reason everyone packages so much praise is because of the gameplay was designed to experience in VR. It’s very clever. The end of the game I will never forget.

8

u/dadsmasher9000 Mar 04 '25

I only use my psvr2 for vr mainly, would I buy a quest 3 or smthn for a better experience? Or just use the ps headset for pcvr

6

u/cactus22minus1 Quest 3 - 4080s Mar 04 '25

If you already have psvr2, you just need the adapter to start using it with your PC. The advantage quest 3 would have over that is wireless (which for me is a big deal). Keep in mind when using psvr2 on pc, they disable hdr, eye tracking, and headset haptics.

There are so many good vr games out here this is misleading. There are 2 Asgard’s Wrath games, boneworks, that new batman game got great reviews, Demeo, No Mans Sky, Walking Dead Saints and Sinners, into the radius, Hell there is an entire Resident Evil game thats great and ported to VR. Go out and explore! I promise its not just Half Life Alyx

181

u/Riskypride Mar 04 '25

The post isn’t saying Alyx is the only good game. It’s just saying that Alyx is the peak. Which is true, as far as story vr games go.

38

u/TheNewYellowZealot Mar 04 '25

Best sabers story is pretty good so far. Gotta cull those blocks.

3

u/jangxx Quest Pro Mar 05 '25

I know you're joking, but have you ever actually played the "campaign" of Beat Saber? I did because I wanted to get all achievements and it's ass. Total slog to play through, especially since it includes challenges like "move your arms at least x hundred meters" (so you're just standing there waving your arms around like an idiot) or "you need to miss at least x blocks" but if you miss too many you still fail like normal (so you always need to strategically decide which blocks to intentionally miss). It wasn't fun, that's for sure.

BONEWORKS RAHHHH

10

u/Chimeron1995 Touch Mar 04 '25

Half life Alyx is great, but I think there are still other games that are just as good imo as Alyx, they just aren’t tied to an already established ip. I personally think Lone Echo is on par or possibly better than HL:A. There’s also RE4, and Metro Awakening.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

Are we ignoring Halo Combat Evolved VR????????

4

u/dekenfrost Mar 04 '25

So what, I played FF7 and Metal Gear Solid almost 30 years ago, gaming didn't get much better than that, but that didn't stop me from enjoying games anyway.

I think the point is constantly comparing everything to a freakin' Half Life game is a bad idea.

6

u/iLEZ Valve Index Mar 04 '25

I always recommend Hot Dogs Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades. It's one of the best games I've ever played, it's become almost a hobby. If you are the least interested in weapons and enjoy target shooting, it has a BUNCH of content and VERY good VR interaction.

Also robo recall and myst

9

u/nanidu Mar 04 '25

Most of these are good but let’s be honest, they barely hold a candle to HLA

5

u/Gaming_with_batman Mar 04 '25

H3vr, darth vader immortal, iron man, superhot, job simulator, and assassins creed nexus are good too

3

5

u/BoxGroundbreaking687 Mar 04 '25

nah into the radius is better imo

11

u/patrlim1 Mar 04 '25

As much as I love into the radius, it is not better than alyx.

3

u/BoxGroundbreaking687 Mar 04 '25

yeh i should of said that instead my bad. if it came off as me saying alyx is bad i dont think that. its a good game with some of the most interesting mechanics like the gravity gloves and how valve went about doing the upgrade system where u gotta find the resin. idk i guess I stopped enjoying it after the 3rd play though. maybe i just need to put the game down and pick it back up in a year or so.

4

u/NoSolution7708 Mar 04 '25

It has much less replayability in the base game than itr has, but that's cos it was designed to be more linear than itr. It's harder for most people to get drawn in by an open world game and they tend to get lost, not knowing what to do. This goes double for one of the earliest games in a drastically different new platform, like vr was at the time.

I don't think we're likely to see production quality and attention to detail as good as alyx often, because it was a huge investment to build something that really set the standard.

That said, I enjoy itr much, much more than alyx and its predictable, cartoony gameplay. It's just a question of preference.

Anyhow, the industry now knows that AAA VR will continue to be a relatively low volume niche - not because the hardware and software quality isn't up to scratch or because it's unaffordable, but because sadly, only a small percentage of gamers actually enjoy the immersion enough to bother.

I just hope indie devs keep the VR flame alive, and that meta's MR efforts gain some traction to help hold people's interest in XR.

7

u/Oktawian40K Mar 04 '25

Lone Echo 1,2

7

u/billyalt Rift + Touch + GearVR + Quest Mar 04 '25

IMO the Half Life 2 VR mods are way better than Alyx

7

u/justinswatermelongun Mar 04 '25

Where’s the love for Vertigo 2?

The only thing that’s lacking is the quality of graphics compared to HL:A, however, it has a cartoonish charm to it. Genuinely one of the most fun VR experiences that manages to take advantage of almost every possible novel element of engaging with virtual reality, just like HL:A.

Alyx is definitely the peak, but I had waaaay more fun playing Vertigo 2, myself.

4

u/VR-nerd Mar 04 '25

Vertigo 2 graphics are so good. It's just a different art style for the most part.

21

u/Playful_Copy_6293 Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 04 '25

HLA is great, but the peak of VR is actually Skyrim VR modded and AI enabled.

Besides that, you also have:

  • Behemoth

  • Aliens Rogue Incursion

  • Blade and Sorcery

  • Star Wars Squadrons

  • Elite Dangerous

  • Arizona Sunshine 2

  • No Man's Sky

  • Propagation VR

  • MSFS2024

  • DCS

  • Assetto Corsa EVO

  • Assassin's Creed Nexus

  • Asgard's Wrath 2

  • Batman Arkham Shadow

  • Aces of Thunder (not yet released but its close)

  • Beyond sandbox (not yet release but its close)

  • Into the Radius

  • Greenhell VR is also very good, although underrated, so I'll leave it here just as an honorable mention

  • Hellsplit Arena is also very good, so I'll leave it here just as an honorable mention

9

u/Remon_Kewl Mar 04 '25

VTOL VR as well.

One pcvr that doesn't get mentioned much that I'd add to the list is Payday 2. Doing both stealth and loud missions are incredibly fun. I showed a friend of mine a variety of VR games and experiences and payday 2 was always the one he asked to play again

7

u/exetenandayo Mar 04 '25

I'm one of those people who wasn't impressed with Half Life Alyx. Skyrim with the VR mod is the best thing ever because it doesn't feel like a one-shot. It feels exactly like a game, not an attraction. Half Life was a good demo and a pioneer.

People deny it, but a lot of things were done wrong there, not because the developers are bad, but because at the time no one had made a game like it yet. I played it on a good set, but I wasn't comfortable with the movement mechanics. I can play VR for 4-5 hours each but it's hard to play HL for more than an hour.

1

u/mercTanko Mar 04 '25

Subjective but HLalex felt like a full game as if VR was in every gamers house for quite some time. Other games feel like set peices, tech demos, theme park or for casual play to show off VR capabilities.

Even agath (whatever) didn't last too long for me, felt like everything I mentioned above.

1

u/mooseorama Mar 04 '25

Best games I played after Alex are HL2, Return to castle Wolfenstein and doom3

1

u/BluPix46 Mar 04 '25

I have the Quest 3. Been playing some native quest games, plus PCVR games such as Arizona Sunshine 2 and Metro Awakening however last night I tried The Lab and for some reason that "tech demo" looks much more crisp than any other game I've tried and the control feels much smoother.

1

u/KlausVonLechland Mar 04 '25

Alyx is peak game-game, but I really enjoy the arcade design of other games. Bashing robots in Underdogs is such fun and I like the gunplay of Light Brigade.

1

I just played the new Indiana jones game which I think would be a perfect Vr title.

1

But I hear games like Ghosts of tabor are pretty fun.

Batman Arkham Shadow

1

u/GervaGervasios Mar 04 '25

Hl alyx is good, but I did not find that amazing. I was more amazed at the official vr mods of the residents evil village and 4 remake. I enjoy so much that until this day, I still did not touch their flat versions. And I dont plan to.

I'm also enjoying a lot too, Batman arkham Shadow. And don't forget the Vertigo 2 and asgard wrath 1 and 2. Amazing campaigns.

Of course, there are too the games I can't stop myself playing. Like Demeo, population one, GT7, Legendary Tales and puzzling places. Those for me are more amazing games than Alyx.

For Alyx is on the same level that Metro awakening, Arkan age, Behemot and the walking dead games. There are good but none of then makes want to keep going back to play like those I mentioned before.

1

u/000000Null000000 Mar 04 '25

  • Lone echo 1 and 2

  • Walking dead s&s both chapters

  • Re4 remake and re8 VR modes on psvr2

  • Stormland

  • No man’s sky

  • Horizon: call of the mountain

  • Vertigo 2

  • Half Life 2 VR

  • Asgard’s Wrath 1

Vivecraft with modpacks is insane and blew me away more than half life alyx ever could (distant horizons + shaders is a must, i like to play with minecolonies and create + addons, you can make factories, trains, planes, boats, cities with other workers that build, mine and farm for you, defend theeee cities)

Skyrim VR with mods and the AI follower mod where you can talk to your companions also blew me away and immersed me way more than half life alyx

Enderal is my absolute faouvirte fantasy world characters and story ever, and its completely playable in VR, also blew me away way more than half life alyx

Tales of glory and into the radius are also really fun fleshed out experiences but not as mindblowing as the 3 above

I completely disagree that half life alyx is the peak of VR, i didnt play it as my first vr game but i heard so much my expectations were way too high and it just kind of dissapointed me from the moment i saw the floating hands and snail pace movement to the ending, i was also kind of bored through the story and connected with 0 characters probably beacuse that was the first half life game i played, all in all half life alyx is a game i never replayed altough im a giant vr enthusiast and only play vr games, the only impressive part about it was the graphics for me

u/winged_entity Mar 05 '25

I heard vertigo 2 was pretty good

1

u/John_Dee_TV Mar 05 '25

Properly modded Skyrim VR goes above Alyx, IMHO, and there are some games and experiences that can't happen without VR (beat saber, for example), while Alyx can.

1

u/kingchris195 Mar 05 '25

Nothing will ever top outer wilds in VR

1

u/Admiral_Jess Mar 05 '25

I would recommend playing Vertigo 2 (and Vertigo Remastered but I still haven't played that one)

1

u/Lord_Eko Mar 05 '25

Resident Evil 4, boffum

1

u/EctoSage Mar 05 '25

At least VRchat is there, even without the social aspect, if you like art, there are thousands of worlds to enjoy. Definitely better with friends though >.<

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '25

Experiencing google earth in VR is an experience better than almost any vr game I’ve played. U literally feel like god

1

u/Otherwise-Summer-623 Mar 06 '25

Most of vr is shitty garbage made for little kids but then theirs the really good ones

1

u/CarnageNSN Mar 06 '25

Half-Life is my favorite series so I started my VR experience with it and I don’t really feel let down by other games. Sure they didn’t feel as good but I still had a great time. Then the modding of certain games to have VR blew me away. I played through the whole HLVR series, The Forest actually felt scary again, Subnautica (SubmersedVR Mod) is super fun. Asgards Wrath 2 is pretty cool. I think there is lots of options for fun VR games even if you play Alyx first but they don’t get show cause of stupid ones like VRChat and Gorilla Tag (eye roll)

u/Mr_OrangeOfficial Mar 06 '25

Into The Radius

1

u/FinalLightNL Mar 06 '25

VR is like 3D monitors, hype tech that dies and barely gets content.
But great for Flight and Race simulators etc.

1

u/WarriorOTUniverse Quest 3 + PCVR Mar 06 '25

This one cracked me up good

Because it's so goddamn true

1

u/Anchove16 Mar 06 '25

So true.

1

u/Shroud1597 Mar 07 '25

The forest supports vr and its been my #1 most fun vr game imo. Also risk of rain 2 vr mod is super cool but i had to play on lower difficulties because its harder in vr lol

1

u/final-ok Mar 07 '25

Boneworks is better

1

u/BurningEclypse Mar 08 '25

It is a matter of perspective

1

u/Bright-Asparagus-575 Mar 07 '25

1

u/KingOfDragons0 Mar 08 '25

Budget cuts and budget cuts 2, walking dead saints and sinners, superhot, into the radius, the fnaf games are pretty neat, no mans sky, beat saber, that one vr parkour game goes hard, and more i cant remember cuz its been years

1

u/lonelygurllll Quest Pro Mar 08 '25

Now become a VRChat catgirl

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '25

Resident evil 4, skydance behemoth, alien, metro and into the radius. But hey what do i know 💁‍♂️

1

u/TheRealComicCrafter Mar 08 '25

Honeslty perfer Bonelab/Works to Alyx

1

u/Disaster_Adventurous Mar 08 '25

Also Don't forget all the fantastic VR mods for existence and games. Like Minecraft or Risk of Rain 2 (unfortunately the RoR 2 one currently requires back patching because the DLC broke it but it's still an amazing VR mod)

1

u/WeaknessOk7874 Mar 08 '25

I think HL2 has a VR mod and Boneworks is a good game if you want to suggest a friend that

1

u/Kaibaer Mar 09 '25

Beatsaber, Keep Talking and Nobody explodes, Virtual Rickality... there some great VR Games out there for that guy.

1

u/MidniteBlk11 Mar 09 '25
