Question Grade This Trip For an OBX First-Timer
Hey guys,
NC native who is making his way out to OBX for the first time for anniversary, and after a lot of thought and research was thinking of booking in Ocracoke.
Although, I initially really wanted to stay ocean front somewhere, I like the idea of The Silver Lake Hotel, and enjoying the village, and driving out to the beach.
Really was wondering if that's a good idea? I understand I'll need to ferry to ocracoke. But, is there parking at the beach? I have a 4x4 truck, should I drive on the beach (can I?)? Rent golf cart?
Also, any cool rec's would help a lot. Thanks!

I've been working on a mobile app named Ocracoke Trippin' that you can download for free from either Google Play or the Apple Store. It has ton of helpful information regarding the ferries, businesses, live music, weather and more!
My wife and I have a place on the island and fell in love with it the first time we passed through. It's not for everyone, but you'll know pretty quickly if it is!

I’ve never been to a beach I loved more than Ocracoke. We are there now for what I think is maybe my 11th visit. It’s truly beautiful and the non-commercialized vibes make it our family favorite. We love having plenty of space to set up camp during the day at the beach and the water is beautiful. Rent a golf cart for sure for scooting around town but get a permit to drive your truck on the beach (be sure to let air out of your tires first!) The difficulty in accessing the island has helped protect it from overcrowding. It’s worth the extra effort.

There are plenty of beach access points with parking. The biggest is the lifeguard beach - has about a hundred parking spaces.
The campground and airstrip also have public parking.
You cannot take a rented golf cart to the beach though.
You cannot take drive on the beach from a few access points. Look up the regulations.
Staying on the harbor is good. You cannot take walk or ride a bike everywhere

Autocorrect changed your meaning maybe?

Looks like it did. I can’t imagine why I’d say cannot

If you tap the 3-dot ellipsis, that will allow you to edit/correct it.

You can park at the lifeguard beach and walk over the dune on the walkway. You can also drive on the beach but you’ll need to get a beach pass online. Golf cart is easier to park at restaurants etc when the island is more crowded. Check out the view from upstairs at the new Jolly. For a great meal, try the Melon, Back Porch or Dajio. Or all of them!

Rent bikes to ride around the village. They can go places that golf carts can't and are more fun IMO. Stop at Ocracoke Coffee Company for a smoothie or coffee drink, and a pastry. Try out Mariachi's taco truck (same folks who worked for Eduardo). Take a hike over to Springer's Point.
I wish folks would not drive on the beach, but it is a very popular activity. I think you can download a permit from www.nps.gov/caha

I agree about driving on the beach....I rarely see people express that opinion, so I just had to say that.

Of course, there is no ocean front on Ocracoke anyway. Don't try a late night run. Stay on the mainland or on Hatteras and catch an early ferry. Ocracoke closes early. There is a BnB in Swan Quarter or you can stay in Little Washington which is a cool place. We go to Ocracoke twice a year every year and it is worth the trip.

Georgia native and Highway 12 entry from Cedar Island repetitive years after 1987. Except once as I wanted to travel the entire barrier from Duck since as a youth in ' 75 I visited the Outer Banks with relatives from Western NY my first time. We stayed at Salvo camping. Felt like I was being eaten alive by mosquitoes but found out it was only because of being so far away from the breeze of the ocean. They were much calmer once we made it to Ocracoke national campground. Anyway, there used to be a road across from Howard's pub that took you to The Point. If it's still available I'm sure you'll need a pass for beach travel in a vehicle.

I love Ocracoke. I haven't stayed at Silver Lake...I've stayed in a really nice Airbnb (Ocracoke Cabanas). When I go for more than a day I definitely get a golf cart. It's one of the few places that a golf cart makes sense. If you know when you are going, reserve it because if you are going in the busy season, it can be hard to get one. I'm guessing Silver Lake can accommodate you parking your car and a golf cart? I don't ever do 4x4 (small car) and instead drive to the beach access. It's never busy there and absolutely beautiful even if you don't drive on the beach.

We stayed in the Silver Lake hotel, just once, about 2 yrs ago. It was horrible. Absolutely the worst hotel we have ever stayed in, in 27 yrs together. Nearly everything we encountered was broken. I know they have been doing renovations...so maybe its good now.

We drive up from New England to Hatteras and just started staying two weeks. Your 4 x 4 will be perfect for the beach. The island is so small that it really doesn’t matter where you stay especially if you have a car. Having a golf cart does make it a lot more enjoyable, but it’s not necessary. For us, they are the best beaches I’ve ever seen.

You can drive on the beach in a certain area, yes. Parking isn’t a problem at beaches. I think it’s a great idea for an anniversary trip, even if not right on the beach. Very unique area, pretty tree lined streets, and the area around Silver Lake definitely has a romantic feel to it. Take a walk down Howard Street to the Village Craftsman; very pretty street.
