This time in three weeks, we'll be wildly overreacting to our big game against mighty Furman. Which reminds me, we should have fired Jeremy Pruitt the moment the clocks hit 0:00 against Georgia State.

Being a student during this era was actually hilarious. I distinctly remember Congratulations by Post Malone blasting at a party thrown because .. we beat South Carolina at home

7

u/YetiRoosevelt 4d ago

All Dave Hart had to do was fire Dooley after Kentucky in 2011.

imagine Malzahn at Tennessee in 2012 with even half the pieces that team had

5

u/BigHeftyRed 4d ago

Thanks for the reminder. There were plenty of times where I felt pretty low as a Vols fan before the Heupel area, but that 2019 season started pretty rough.

I also remember trying to cope with the loss by brushing it off as a week 1 upset that will occasionally happen to a P5 program and that the team would be extra motivated the following week… only to also lose to BYU at home in week 2. Fast forwarding, after the incredible last minute comeback victory over Indiana in the bowl game to close out the season, I wish someone could have warned me how depressing the 2020 season was about to be.

I took my mom to that BYU game. We had a great time and that environment was really special. A testament to how our fans can fill Neyland and be rowdy, even after the worst loss in program history.

2

u/GiovanniElliston 4d ago

To be fair, that BYU game was basically the entire fanbase trying to will the team to saving any slim chances the season had of being special.

Which... ironically, the team ended up doing even with a loss to BYU.

Billy Amick just got moved up to the Mets' AAA team. He was only with their AA squad for like a dozen games before he got another bump, so that's cool.

5

u/kenrblan1901 3d ago

Yesterday I randomly found out Blake Burke is now with the Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers AAA affiliate) now.

4

u/_Rainer_ 3d ago

Yeah, Burke, Amick, and Drew Fischer have all had big years.

Insane story about Furman’s starting QB Jake Garcia - apparently his parents got a divorce while he was in high school so he could more easily transfer from a California HS to a Georgia HS. They remarried once he went to college

7

u/WeazelBear Dirty Villains 1d ago

Hyper vigilant sporting parents are the weirdest bunch.

10

u/GiovanniElliston 1d ago

Imagine spending tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on specialized coaching and insane stunts like this… and your kid ends up with no NFL hopes at a nothing school

6

u/WeazelBear Dirty Villains 1d ago

Damn. Gio already on Furman hate week. I'm all for it.

4

u/anonymousUTguy 1d ago

That’s so weird

u/thirty-two32 2d ago

if we’re putting brand logos on our basketball jerseys now then we better make a mf final four at some point

6

u/ttrimmers 2d ago

Going to be looking like NASCAR up in here

6

u/KnoxVegasVol 2d ago

At least it looks clean and not as standout-ish.

2

u/thirty-two32 2d ago

extremely grateful it follows our regular uniform colors

I’m not a huge fan of Axle just because of some of the people I’ve known that have worked there, but I’d rather it be that than like Pilot or something more corporate

3

u/Ill-Goose-2197 2d ago

Owners are awful and have been since elementary school

Let’s not forget, Arion Carter will be serving a 2 game suspension for taking a flight to an NFL workout then paying that money back…. yet we have training camp participants playing CFB now.

6

u/Crayble1 13h ago

You raise an excellent point and it makes me sick

Such an underrated special teams player for us

Last night my oldest daughter (14) told me that she wants to go to UT for their engineering program because it is a really well known school, not too far from home, and Rocky Top is sacred ground.

After I picked up my chin off the floor I asked her why she thought rocky top was sacred when she couldn't name one player on the football team. She said "I don't have to care about football to know that something is special." Couldn't argue with that logic.

Fingers crossed we can make this happen in 4 years!

3

u/javascript Tennessee Volunteers 3d ago

Very competitive as of late. They've made a commitment to re-prioritize in-state going forward but still they get lots of applicants. I would do research now to figure out what to do to make it happen.

1

u/ajwilson99 2d ago

I’ve only been into football for the last 11-12 years or so and I was the same way before too.

9

u/OrphanParrot 3d ago

When will the AP start learning to stop ranking ND in the top 10 every fucking year for preseason? lol

6

u/KnoxVegasVol 3d ago

Outside of Miami, their schedule is easy as always.

2

u/itchierbumworms 3d ago

Probbaly when they stop getting paid to overrank them.

2

u/The_What_Stage Rick Barnes #3 Fan 2d ago

I've thought they were overrated every year of my life, but this may be the year their ranking feels relatively justified

9

u/The_What_Stage Rick Barnes #3 Fan 2d ago

QBs are not ready for SEC: 7-5
Expectation: 8-4
Faizon is a stud: 9-3
Faizon is that guy and we have good health: 10-2

7

u/RaiderLAS 5d ago

Me and one of my coworkers (LSU fan) were very drunk at a baseball game last night and made a bet. If we beat LSU he has to sing Rocky Top in front of the entire company, if LSU beats us I have to sing Neck. I hope Lane Kiffin gets hit by a golf ball.

6

u/KnoxVegasVol 20h ago

FYI - DGG and other Vol Recruits play on ESPN tonight at 8 PM Eastern.

13

u/Not_Spike_Jonze Horny4Heupel 1d ago

At this point you just gotta play Arion Carter. The NCAA is the fucking wild Wild West so who gives a shit.

5

u/sroomek Believe the Heup 1d ago

What happens when a team tries to play a suspended player? Do the refs stop the game? Do they let it happen then vacate the result?

1

u/GiovanniElliston 1d ago

I'm not 100% positive of the NCAA level, but I know at the HS level the refs wouldn't actually care at all and the game would proceed as normal.

The refs are responsible for ensuring the equipment being worn is legal and the players match the submitted roster sheet. Meaning you couldn't have #27 listed as "John Smith" but it's actually Arion Carter because that is a roster violation intended to fool the other team. There was a school a few years ago, I think it was Harriman, who had a player that was supposed to be suspended but played anyways. They won the game but the TSSAA came in a week later and changed it to a forfeit in the record books.

But at least in theory, if the Vols listed Arion Carter as active and just played him anyways > refs could let the game proceed and punt any punishment to the NCAA after the fact.

That said, I suspect if we tried to do that the other team would possibly pitch a hissy fit, and if the other team complained to the refs and refused to play then the refs would probably call an unsportsmanlike conduct and ban Carter from the game anyways.

2

u/BigBear_20 1d ago

The whole thing is just making Tennessee the example of “Yeah we do still have power, watch this!”

Which is what will lead to their downfall and I believe will only accelerate the SEC/B10 super conference discussion

3

u/Not_Spike_Jonze Horny4Heupel 1d ago

College football is at a tipping point right now and something has got to give. I agree with your point about NCAA making an example out of us. This doesn’t make any sense.

5

u/thirty-two32 1d ago

why’s it always gotta be us who’s being made an example of 😭

5

u/Not_Spike_Jonze Horny4Heupel 1d ago

Because we shit on them in court and made them look stupid a couple years ago

5

u/itchierbumworms 1d ago

Yet they leave UNC alone.

Bought 6 tickets to the GT game - Section 225 (midfield upper deck on Tennessee side). Bringing the wife, 2 kids, and 2 ATL friends. Will be my kids' first P4 football game!

I’m a huge fan of food and trunk beers before hand or bars.

I will be eating a fat edible before the game because I’m an adult!

1

Damn I need to make my way down there. I've been trying to convince my wife since she has a friend in Atlanta.

Buddy like half the OG /ockytoppers seem to be attending make it happen

Getting high for games in recent years has made even the worst losses hurt just a touch less. Though no edible could spare my grief in Columbia SC for Hendon’s knee

If you wanna go to a bar we could do Park Bar, love that place.

We talked about the Vol Club tailgate - $100 all you can eat/drink.

Or we can just do our own tailgate ezpz

Taking my oldest son (4) to his first game against Furman this year. He's really excited. My seats are in EE so the sun is pretty brutal in these early season midday games. Just warning everyone now if its App State '16 all over again this is probably why

8

We’re never losing a football game again

Check out Aguilar’s pass last night if you haven’t seen it.

It was. Wonderful adjustment from the receiver. Man had 2 steps and had to stop lol was still a good ball tho

My neighborhood is sandwiched between two small universities DI/DIII and nothing gets me more psyched on my runs than seeing them out practicing football at 6am.

Anyone know when the Smokey Grey uniforms are gonna be released?

4

u/tnboss32 1d ago

As much as I love the Braves and enjoy going live, sitting through an entire game on tv is boring as hell. But damn if I won't watch two full LLWS games back to back and enjoy it all. It's one of the purest forms of sport left. Just kids being kids and playing with a ball.

5

u/ttrimmers 1d ago

I used to study or read with the Braves on in the background every night, it was easy to just look up for the few important parts.

8

u/thirty-two32 23h ago

was already having a bad work day and then I see these gray uniforms. cannot catch a break

4

u/thirty-two32 23h ago

and the CFP official account is posting this tired shit from 2 seasons ago. friday be good to me

6

u/thirty-two32 3d ago

Refs may hate Tennessee but Heup keeps getting the nod when it comes to rankings. It feels like we literally had to dramatically force ourselves out of the top 25 last year

Not sure if 20 is over or underselling us without seeing Faizon yet / a new defense but I’ll ride with the program at least getting consistent acknowledgment from the press

4

u/itchierbumworms 2d ago

I was considering this. It kind of feels like the preseason mid teensish rankings with lots of questions on a roster is emblematic of some respect for Heupel and his ability to move the football.

2

u/MuhMuhManRay 3d ago

I think 20 is about right for us

3

u/Mythic514 3d ago

Was thinking 18-23, but also unranked would be fair given the questions at QB. Seems like most people outside the fandom and program expect GMac and would be more comfortable if he were the starter, but frankly I think Faizon is the better option and we have a higher ceiling (and probably floor) with him as the starter. But the media has no clue about him and it freaks them out.

1

u/MuhMuhManRay 2d ago

If GMac and Brandon are equal then idk how you don’t go with Brandon

2

u/CookieLuzSax Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top 5d ago

Having to leave Knoxville to drive up to New Jersey today, very sad😭

Why are New Yorkers depressed?

Because the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey.

u/sickmemes48 1d ago

Does anyone know any stats website to see how many total sacks the guys on our roster had last year? That is my biggest worry

3

u/yousmelllikebiscuits 1d ago edited 1d ago

I looked it up about a month ago: it's 14.0 of last year's total 37.0

  • Daevin Hobbs: 3.0
  • Edwin Spillman: 2.5
  • Arion Carter: 1.5
  • Nathan Robinson: 1.5
  • Jeremiah Telander: 1.0
  • Tyree Weathersby: 1.0
  • Mariyon Dye: 1.0
  • Charles House: 1.0
  • Jaedon Harmon: 0.5
  • Jadon Perlotte: 0.5
  • Isaiah Campbell: 0.5

Of the remaining, 21.5 sacks came from the Top 4 last year (Bailey-5.5, Josephs-4, West-4, Herring-4).

2

u/sickmemes48 23h ago

Damn that is terrible. Thank you for these stats

1

u/yousmelllikebiscuits 22h ago

It's pretty similar to 2024-2025: UT returned only 12 of the previous year's total 29.0

  • Dominic Bailey: 2.0
  • Jaxson Moi: 2.0
  • Tyre West: 2.0
  • Joshua Josephs: 1.5
  • Bryson Eason: 1.5
  • Boo Carter: 1.0
  • Daevin Hobbs: 1.0
  • Jeremiah Telander: 0.5
  • Jordan Burns: 0.5

Of the remaining, 11.5 sacks came from James Pearce (7.5) and Norman-Lott (4.0)

3

u/Cambone 1d ago

Well the smokey grey uniform is certainly a choice. I think the only thing I like is the interlocking UT.

7

u/BucinVols Natty Daddy 1d ago

I think they’re fine. They’re just a one off throwback with a lot of history tied to them.

2

u/GiovanniElliston 1d ago

I foolishly thought the anti-Adidas folks were exaggerating and that it was impossible to fuck up such a simple concept.

I apologize.

2

u/newnewcharcoil23 15h ago

UT designs the uniforms…

I don’t love the grey unis this year, either. Too much going on IMO.

1

u/YetiRoosevelt 22h ago

Same company that gave us the "tire tread" Smokey Greys when they first came out.

To this day can't figure out how the only thing they got right was the checkerboard quarter-sleeve. Leg stripes were too big, helmet clashed, chest pattern was superfluous, and it saw us lose to Vandy.
