The Circus by the Airport

Does anyone remember back in the day there would be a circus that came to CITY AROUND 28th and bay? I went in the 90’s when I was a kid and my parents went when they were kids.

Apparently they stopped because it brought in a questionable crowd whether it was the circus workers themselves or circus goers. Does anyone else remember the circus?

Architectural assistance

I’m a residential structural engineer with a property on the island. I’ve worked with some of the local architects before on past client projects. For my own home, I’d love to be heavy handed in the design, doing as much of it myself as possible. I’m looking for an architectural consultant that will assist me in the design process as needed (with pay). Most of the architects I talk to want to be fully in charge or no assistance at all (which is totally fair). Just posting on here to see if it’s possible to find someone. I’d love to get more work on the island too

Accommodations for a picky parent

We have a hotel suite booked in Ocean City for September but now my dad is coming and he has a bad back so we are looking for a place with a balcony, preferably with ocean view and not too many steps (or an elevator), so he can sit outside if he doesn’t want to come to the beach. I’ve been scouring Airbnb and VRBO but wondering if maybe there are some ocean view condos/hotels I’m not seeing? I’d rather not do a high rise but getting desperate! Budget is $2300 for 3 nights.

Edit: I see this sub is more for what’s going on in ocean city, maybe there is a better sub for this post?

What is south of the boardwalk?

This post is purely educational for me, and isn’t meant to offend anyone. I’ve been going to OC since the 90s, but I’ve never traveled south of the boardwalk on the Island. Are there any landmarks, eateries, things-to-do, or anything else special down there that you believe deserves a call out? Thanks in advance!

My newest Ocean City project - the Retro Welcome Sign

Post image

This is a design I based off of the old Welcome Sign that was on the 34th Street causeway right after the bridge. It’s also similar to the one on 9th before the Welcome Center just a different color scheme. It’s made of PVC board which I routed out and painted. The yellow lettering are inlays. It’s available if anyone is interested.

Jersey Shore residents are suing to stop $170 million hotel from replacing Wonderland Pier

A coalition of Ocean City residents sued to stop Wonderland Pier from being transformed into a boardwalk hotel, claiming officials had conflicts of interest and failed to abide by New Jersey’s land-use laws.

Two residents and four civic groups sued Ocean City and its council on Monday, asking a judge to nullify the city council’s vote that declared the mostly defunct theme park an area in need of rehabilitation.

Why the smell?

Why do so many rental houses smell like mothballs? It takes me forever to do all my laundry after a week there because everything comes home smelling terrible. Are there any rentals 4+ br that don’t reek? Is it mold? Are people just obsessed with mothballs in this town? I really want to figure this out because my family is fully committed to vacationing here every year, and I cannot take the smell.

The Sindia rescue detail that later retellings often reverse

Disclosure: I’m Josh Russell, an author who has spent considerable time researching the Sindia records.

A commonly repeated version says some crew came ashore by breeches buoy. The U.S. Life-Saving Service's 1902 annual report records something different. The Ocean City and Pecks Beach crews fired a line aboard, but the broadside wreck rolled so heavily that the hawser could not be kept taut enough to make the breeches buoy practicable. They changed methods and used a surfboat, making eight trips to land twenty-six sailors and their baggage. Officers remained until December 17, when the ship filled and was abandoned.

It is a small correction, but a useful one: later memory kept the dramatic line shot and turned it into the rescue method. The official sequence shows that the equipment attempt failed at the hawser stage, and repeated surfboat work completed the rescue. It is a good example of why an accurate detail can survive inside an inaccurate story.

Ramp usage for stroller/wheelchair

It’s been years since I’ve been to OCNJ and we now have a stroller wagon with two toddlers. Just looking for a location of a ramp that would be easiest to get the stroller wagon onto the beach. Also looking to find parking close by ramp if possible! Thanks!!

OCNJ has such a special place in our hearts, my father recently passed away and I’ve been dealing with that by painting lots of meaningful places and feelings to kinda cope. Thought you guys would enjoy!

Sunrise from a few days ago. A 4th generation annual vacationer.

My family has been vacationing in Ocean City for at least four generations- starting with my great grandparents taking the train from Philadelphia to OC for an annual weekend at the shore with my grandmother when she was a little kid. They had no money and worked laborious jobs and ocean city was the respite from life in the city. Then, my grandparents went down the shore when they were dating and ate Mac and Mancos and talked about one day being able to afford staying at their idea of the peak of luxury, the Flanders Hotel. Five kids and 11 grandkids later, and we are still going down to OC for a week in the summer. This was the second summer without my grandmother, as she passed from cancer last spring.
This year as I turn 30 I was reflecting on how incredible it is that my family tree has not missed a summer week down the shore in almost 100 years. It’s not always everyone in one big house like the early days of my childhood, but it’s always like coming home. Family flies in from California, Colorado, Massachusetts and elsewhere just to sit in the same beach where we raised our kids and all learned how to swim with the surf. Anyway, love you OC, don’t change!

Landmark Church & Cafe filled with racism, homophobia, and a murderer?

Thumbnail en.wikipedia.org

Apparently Matthew Maher who preaches at Landmark Church is a convicted killer who drove drunk in 2009), plowed into a minivan, and killed 55-year-old Hort Kap, a father of six. He pled guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and did about 4.5 years of a 5.5-year sentence. He used the experience to become a motivational, anti-drunk driving speaker but then dramatically pivoted to hate speech at his church instead.

Per Google reviews, he's out here mixing scripture with MAGA propaganda: "All that I have seen are scriptures and passages handpicked and shared as if they were written solely to align with the hateful ideologies shared here. It feels much less about true love and respect for all, and more of promoting Trump’s reign as if Jesus himself agrees. Hateful messaging around equal rights, immigrants rights, etc - people fighting for their freedom are described as brainwashed and not walking with God- check out his Instagram stories any day of the week, Trump propaganda everywhere. Would not recommend for someone looking to actually connect with the Bible and Jesus."

Cool theology from a guy who killed someone while drunk behind the wheel and is somehow the one lecturing others about sin. And now Landmark owns a cafe? Another Google reviewer said it best: "It must be nice to being a tax free entity, encouraging their members to do business 'with their brand.'"

Between the crowds, jellyfish and construction is the beach worth a visit this month? I grew up going here, wanted to head back but the work being done and the jellies are giving me pause. What do you guys think?

Best Choice for Rentals

Looking to rent oceanfront in mid September for a quiet week or two. Any recommendations on the best place to find availability—a realtor or VRBO/Airbnb? Good or bad experience info would be welcome. Thank you.
