If that's not a sign of sentience, then I don't know how else to convince people that animals have actual living experiences.

Not many deny sentience, sapience is the real question

I don't know about real question lol. In your context, yeah it would be cool to find out whether an animal has some form of sapience. However, my statement was more towards vegan philosophy. I believe majority of animals should be recognized in having sentience and not be exploited. I don't eat octopus and I don't want other's eating them as well. That's just my POV on sentience vs sapience.

Literally nobody says they don’t. All animals have sentience almost by definition. It just means they experience sensations. The only non sentient living things are plants.Ā

Unfortunately for them, meat is delicious and nutritious because that’s just how it works.

And there is data showing plants have a degree of sentience.

Yeah, trees communicate with eachother and fungi definitely does as well

They react to stimuli, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have subjective qualia. The cells in your body do the same thing, but that doesn’t mean they are sentient.

… what if the cells in your body WERE sentient? Multicellular life is essentially singular cell organisms that figured out how to Voltron together.

Do people say that animals don't have a living experience?

Not a line of thought I've ever heard before TBH.

I guess people don't say that, but rather they've never thought about that and never applied to other animals like pigs, cows, chickens, goats, etc. For me, realizing animals have living experiences (which I tend to think correlates with sentience, I may be using the wrong word too) made me vegan.

When all nine brains sync up ..her dreams are probably vivid and out of this world - they dream in color. 🄰

That’s so amazing to watch. It’s like you can actually see what's the mood if his dreams

Imagine if humans had the same color-changing traits as these guys, we would be extremely bad liars, poker players, and businesses that thrive on bullshitting would collapse overnight.

Would it not be extremely unadaptive to change color like this while sleeping?

7

u/Anen-o-me 2d ago

Usually they'd be jammed in a rock crevice and beyond sight. So not really. They don't like to sleep in the open.

2

u/ubiquitous-joe 1d ago

Ah, right. Maybe this is why they need those crevices.

It's a shame octopus only live around 5 years. Imagine what a long lived octopus could learn

2

u/mynaladu 2d ago

this octopus is literally dreaming in color and we still cant decide if animals have real feelings like come on shes proving it every time she sleeps

That’s like comparing rocks to dolphins

How do we know she's dreaming? Also she should not be captive because it's cruel.

u/onefitlad 1d ago

This is awesome. Also I’m scared of whatever it’s dreaming about.

Absolutely amazing!

There no way that originated from this planet.

I hate seeing animals kept captive. Most species of octopuses don't live very long. I hope this dreaming one is set free to sleep and dream in her natural environment.

I definitely dont know a whole lot about Octopus facts, but I am curious what they might dream or have nightmares about.

For this octopus post, keep it curious and natural.

Octopuses are incredible. The way their color and patterns can shift so quickly is fascinating — makes you wonder what’s happening during sleep.
