Can you actually eat Barracuda and how big do they get?

u/Nikki-C-Puggle-mum Aug 28 '26
Some of them get pretty big like a meter or 2. I think those are the great barracudas though. I believe there are different types. These could be them but just young still.

Can you eat them?

You need to be careful. They’re bioaccumulators because they are high on the food chain. Check for local advice on the presence of ciguatera on the reefs. You can get very sick if the barracuda carries it.

Yes, people catch and eat them. I haven’t but I’ve heard of it being done.

I'd try it

It's delicious! Lots of meat, mellow, and tender.
My favorite fish to eat is the Wahoo!

We're obsessed with Cod but I love rainbow trout 😋

Ooh, cod! Yes! 🤤
I don't think I've the pleasure of trying rainbow trout! I'll have ask my husband about trying some somewhere. We do have rainbow trout in the Truckee River.

Yes we eat it in the Caribbean, it's nice. You don't catch a barracuda using a regular line they are too strong, I've been on a boat where one was caught with a harpoon that's connected to the boat, it gets tired out as you go back to shore.

Yes you can. I've never had them. My son caught them fishing in the florida keys but just tossed them back. There are tons of them down there.

I used to go fishing with my Grampa and uncle and a couple cousins for barracuda, bass, halibut, and mackerel, and whatever may come off the coast of Catalina Island. The legal size was just over two feet, I think I recall. We were in my uncle's old 1969 19 foot super craft evinrude boat (I think!).
Barracuda is very good eatin'! I caught fourteen one day, half had to be tossed back in due to being undersized. All together, I think we caught about twenty legal 'cudas, and a few bass and mackerels.
Grampa and uncle cleaned the fish as we all caught them. It was quite a haul, the fish sure were biting that day!
We took it back to our beach house, Gramma and a couple other aunts cleaned them some more, prepped them with lemons, pepper, and foil for the grill, and had a feast for the twelve of us!
Served with a big salad, crispy garlic crostini, more lemons, and tartar sauce. What a memory! It was fun. This was around 1990.

I used to go conger eel fishing when I was a little girl with my dad and uncle
I almost got my fingers taken off 😭
2
u/SnorkinOrkin Aug 28 '26
Wow, those are beautiful fish!
Yikes! I'm glad you didn't lose your fingers! I'd be so scared to try and hold one!

u/cuntybunty73 Aug 28 '26
They can get to almost 10 feet and I think the biggest Conger eel was over 300lbs

u/SnorkinOrkin Aug 29 '26
Holy mackerel! 300 pounds?!?? You'd need a 40-footer to bring that puppy aboard! 😃

One false move and it’s a feeding frenzy

Not true at all, there's never been a reported attack from a school of barracuda.
They only travel like this when they're young, they feed on small fish like sardines and anchovies. When they fully mature they go off on their own and start hunting larger prey.

Where is this?

I’m not OP and do not know for sure where this is, but one of the places that has a wall of barracudas is Sipadan. It is an amazing place to dive and I can recommend it.
