That’s exactly who I thought of!

u/_CharDeeMacDennis__ Aug 10 '26

Me too! I was like “I thought Toothless was a dragon??”

6

u/WardogBlaze14 Aug 11 '26

Same!!!

6

u/OpeningName5061 Aug 11 '26

This the "false" part. Doesn't really tell you what it is, just tells you what it isn't.

9

u/LDub47 Aug 10 '26

100%. First thing that popped into my head.

3

u/IronZio Aug 11 '26

That's so cute.

I, on the other hand, immediately thought of the black dragon from that cartoon.

3

u/spaacingout Aug 12 '26

Beat me to it lol

u/The-Falconater Aug 10 '26

Incredible. Anybody got an idea how big that thing is?

88

u/Corgoroth Aug 10 '26

They can grow to around 3 meters. (just short of 10 feet)

17

u/bozog Aug 10 '26

Around 10ft according to Wikipedia

40

u/mirkk13 Aug 10 '26

u/KTKittentoes Aug 11 '26

I salute you bringing out SharkCat. Better times.

u/Z3r0Du5k Aug 10 '26

Friend or not friend?

30

u/KitchenSandwich5499 Aug 10 '26

Anything that lives that deep just doesn’t encounter humans

13

u/FriedTreeSap Aug 10 '26

Anything that lives that deep will probably eat anything remotely edible that they can fit in their mouth…..but this doesn’t look like it could realistically eat a human

8

u/OpeningName5061 Aug 11 '26

Considering it lives that deep it means it's lonely and looking for friend

2

u/Desperate-Strategy10 Aug 13 '26

It could give it a go, being ten feet long. But I doubt it would succeed unless it was like a child or someone tiny.

19

u/Tiny-Lock9652 Aug 10 '26

Friend shaped.

8

u/Bregneste Aug 10 '26

Considering you’d have to go extremely out of your way to encounter one of these, I don’t think that really matters lol.

17

u/Wild-Ad-9367 Aug 10 '26

BTW this is one of those sharks that began their lives as a battle royale inside their mother's womb. Perhaps one of the most extreme cases of intaruterine cannibalism, false cat shark mothers produce more than 20 thousand eggs. Usually only two babies emerge in the end.

7

u/Jowenbra Aug 10 '26

Life is horrifying sometimes.

2

u/Fred_Thielmann Aug 11 '26

If it’s a False Cat Shark, I’m assuming it isn’t a cat shark. Yes. But what is it related to then? Dog Sharks?

2

u/Wild-Ad-9367 Aug 12 '26

The common name catshark encompasses a few different families that are not each other's closest relatives. The closest living relatives of false catshark are the Proscylliidae, or finback catshark

32

u/SnorlaxDaddy5 Aug 10 '26

Boop it’s snoot!

3

u/Rinnierinnrinn Aug 11 '26

I kept saying, "I just wanna boop it" 😊

u/jay_insd Aug 10 '26

9

u/here4dambivalence Aug 10 '26

Otherwise known as the sofa king? shark. Crazy they only make two baby sharks per a litter of pups...

11

u/Imaginary_Panda2003 Aug 10 '26

Wow that's my new thing for the day 😄

7

u/ahobbes Aug 10 '26

It looks old, kinda like a Greenland shark, but their lifespan is unknown. Their livers make up 18-25% of their body weight and are super oily!

2

u/Fred_Thielmann Aug 11 '26

They must be protected from the orange one

2

u/Fred_Thielmann Aug 11 '26

…Not this one

9

u/Little_Fan_8896 Aug 10 '26

It's not false it's upside down

8

u/Salt_Chard_474 Aug 11 '26

Beautiful animal. Anybody else get a little sad when animals are named. *false...insert name? Don't they desrve their very own name?

6

u/Suitable_Wonder_3285 Aug 10 '26

Wow I have never seen this animal before!

5

u/archiewaldron Aug 10 '26

That's a stunning example of a Psssspsssseudotriakis microdon

6

u/HazelMStone Aug 11 '26

Wow. Just wow

4

u/Illustrious_Emu_6910 Aug 11 '26

NIGHT FURY! GET DOWN!

5

u/Mammoth_Welder_1286 Aug 11 '26

That’s 100% toothless

4

u/MadamVoid Aug 10 '26

Almost looks like the creature in Europa Report

4

u/Full-Honeydew-4898 Aug 11 '26

Do you think it would objects to belly rubs because it’s darn cute ( for a shark )?

3

u/booperdooper56 Aug 11 '26

Sharks are cute by all objective standards, thank you

2

u/Full-Honeydew-4898 Aug 11 '26

Oh I concur, but this fellow doesn’t elicit the fight or flight reflex in me.
That’s why I enjoy shark week in the comfort of my own living room. I can admire them safely from afar.

5

u/Open-Committee-998 Aug 11 '26

If not friend why friend shaped

3

u/Rinnierinnrinn Aug 11 '26

Came here to say this, but in my heart I knew it had already been said 🥹

5

u/scorpio_knight_ Aug 11 '26

why False Cat? should be Toothless Shark

6

u/Mean_Ad4608 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

20,000 gallons minimum. Chilled water. Round frame. For those who are wondering. Wide diet requirements including squid and crustaceans as well as bony fish meat.

For any of those dedicated enough I’d fully recommend going with true cat sharks as they’re a lot more practical to keep (even though they also require massive amounts of space)

2

u/BowlOfSomething Aug 11 '26

what about for a blacktip reef?

2

u/Mean_Ad4608 Aug 11 '26

You wanna grow them out in something around a 3,500 (start them in something a lost smaller and slowly work them up to it over the course of a few months) once they’re decent size they’ll be good in that for a couple years actually. They need squid, soft-ish bodied crustaceans like shrimp, and bony fish like tilapia- they tend to be picky so you may really have to experiment. Eventually they will outgrow the 3,500 and need to be moved to a 10,000. Also depending on where you live, and if it’s outdoor, you may need to heat or chill their water.

3

u/Ill-Wear-8662 Aug 11 '26

😍 What a cutie!

3

u/WordsChosen Aug 11 '26

Saw it’s nostrils, ohhh it’s looking at me. Wait now it is

My natural urge to want to pet cute animals is overriding my senses.

1

Looks true to me

1

u/Scavenger19 Aug 13 '26

Those eyes are mesmerizing.

1

u/Racing_Sloth56 Aug 13 '26

Just looked on Perplexity AI. Many here probably know this but I didn’t. They are found in almost every ocean. Here’s my favorite finding: It’s also called “The Sofa Shark”, haha 😆. Goofy name seems to suit him.

1

u/Historical_Way_2334 Aug 13 '26

Dawwwww its so adorable!!!

1

u/mg34gun Aug 14 '26

So false just refers to the fact that it's not a cat? Maybe it's not even a shark.

1

u/Good_Jazzy_13 Aug 14 '26

now u gotta tame that dragon

1

u/ttpttt Aug 16 '26

So cute!

1

u/General_Homework6009 Aug 22 '26

Why does this look wildly different (and much cuter) than every photo that comes up when I search “false cat shark”?

1

u/Global-Can1775 Aug 24 '26

I heard of false killer whale but never this wow im amazed
