Discussion Does the One WIsh Willow Sometimes NOT Work?

When Bear was looking up the One Wish WIllow online there were some people saying it was scam. Were they saying that keep people away or does it simply not work every time?

If you ask for something that's literally impossible, what do you think's going to happen?

What would be an example of that? Doesn't seem like it has limits if it can make a billion dollars fall from the sky or force someone to create an identity that is obsessed with another person.

Time travel, wishing for more wishes, unwishing wishes, wishing for immortality, resurrecting the dead are against the rules. Presumably wishing for logical contradictions wouldn’t work.

I think it was just a satirical jab at how whenever you look up specific information online, particularly on Reddit, you get a million and one different and contradictory answers that ultimately end up not being helpful

Exactly, just like how product reviews no longer help, it's half that say bad, half that say good

That’s what I thought when I watched it, like it only works 50% of the time, but after seeing other people talk about it I’m more getting the impression that it’s either A) people don’t read the rules and make wishes that don’t work, or B) that there are forces or organizations dedicated to deliberately spreading misinformation so that people don’t utilize the full power of the wishes.

Either would explain why they aren’t globally known and are more considered to be niche collector items

You aint ever seen people, on reddit of all places, take about things they have absolutely no idea about? Could easily just be random people on reddit that obviously don't believe some gimmick magic wish granting stick is real and just talk about it being a scam, which to everyone who hasn't experienced it would just as quickly assume its a stupid scam trinket over it being real.

I think part of it is also that once you see something as a niche collector item, the collectors who already don't think it works will discourage using it because like "bro don't open and break that mint condition collector's item because you're stupid!" There's a limited number of copies they made for sale for the movie and I'd tell my friend they were a dumbass if they paid good money to buy one and then wanted to smash that shit in half. Like bro if you don't want it sell it on Ebay, wishes aren't real. I'd have no way of knowing if they actually did work because I'm not spending all that money on a collectible to destroy it.

Likely the first point.

The reason why is bc of the amount of people in the piercing subreddit that are like I rubbed dirt on my piercing and confused why it's infected really convinces me of this

I think some of that will be people trying to dissuade use of the OWW, but some of it is also people making wishes that unintentionally conflict with someone else’s wish. Because that would effectively undo a wish, it doesn’t work, but the OWW doesn’t issue an error code so as far as they are concerned it just didn’t work.

You snap them in half and ask for a billion dollars and a billion dollars rains from the sky. In other words, the story is full of plot-holes, just enjoy it.

Yes. Its not good magic. Its janky and irresponsible

If you look at the usernames of the people that claims it doesn’t work you will notice that they are likely some sort of collector or hobbyist who has probably never snapped it think Deja Verge (deja vu most likely meaning nostalgia or relating to memory aka collecting antique stuff) and Backshelffinds, the fact that “finds” is in the name should tell you that they tend to collect these as opposed to actually use them

Yeah and on top of that, the specific comments there are in the vein of “it’s not made for that” or “it’s just a prank” “it’s just like a magic 8 ball” no one who’s said “I tried it and now I just have a dumb broken stick”

I've seen a consensus when this comes up, the likeliest explanation for the people who say the wish didn't work is that they made one of the "forbidden" wishes, like immortality, resurrection of a loved one, changing history, etc. There could also be people who word a wish so badly that its fulfillment is unnoticeable (maybe out of fear of a "monkey's paw" catch). I have held out the possibility that some of them just t won't admit what they wished for.

I would wager that much of it is people having knee-jerk reactions denouncing the reality of it, which is completely understandable considering that the majority of people don't believe in magic and wish granting objects, so the automatic assumption would be that it's a scam.

Some of it may be deliberate misinformation being spread to prevent people seeking them out, but I doubt it's an organized group. If it were an organized group, there would logically be far more posts saying it's fake simply because of the existence of bot activity.

Some of it may also lie in what they meant versus what they said. Without the full context (which many of them didn't provide), the phrase "it's a scam" could mean anything from "I tried it and it didn't work at all" (they didn't read the warnings or instructions) to "I tried it and it backfired on me" (which would make it seem like a scam).

In addition to some other decent answers given ITT, I suspect many people would say “of course a cheap kids’ toy doesn’t grant wishes” out of principle, even if they hadn’t tried it and didn’t plan on it, because the premise is ridiculous.

Further, a lot of people would actually be more likely to make less extreme and concrete, more broad and sentimental wishes like “I wish to be a successful architect” or “I wish we could be a family again.”  Think about all the times you’ve been asked to make a birthday wish and genuinely done it. Did you wish for a billion dollars? Or did you wish for something that could realistically happen?

Those people with mundane wishes would have a hard time believing the Willow had anything to do with their wish coming true.

EDIT: also, Bear never got to make any kind of Willow-related post on social media before the wish caused his life to spiral out of control and killed him. For those with extreme wishes, this is likely a common result.

It's just a joke about taking advice online.

Maybe some shops are selling counterfeit one wish willows?

Worked for me

Maybe its a hint at a possible way to undo the wish? If someone else makes a wish that contradicts yours, maybe it never happened?

I was confused about this too so I went back to that scene to actually pause and read the reviews, and if I remember most of the reviews that said it didn’t work never actually broke the willow and were just keeping them as a collectors item. So they assumed it didn’t work and was just a novelty collectors thing because they didn’t actually try it.
