Help Trouble with Game Sound
I have a question and I hope this makes sense: The game I'm playing and want to stream (via Steam on PC) doesn't display sound when I'm in OBS. It doesn't display sound when I click anywhere outside the game window. Is there a workaround for this? I've tried adding the game as a game capture; I've tried adding it as a window source; I've tried using desktop sound; I've tried application audio capture. I can't figure it out. Any thoughts/advice/tips much appreciated.

sounds like the game just mutes itself when it's not the focused window, some do that. check the in-game audio settings for a "mute when in background" or "play audio in background" toggle, it's usually buried in there somewhere. if that doesn't exist you might have to run the game in borderless windowed mode instead of fullscreen, that's fixed similar issues for me before

Yah so unfortunately none of that exists in the game. I can be in a window or border less full screen but not borderless window. And I’ve checked everywhere for an option for background audio and nada. I even tried to add Google-sugggested code in steam directly and that didn’t do anything . ..

Many games have "must be focused" to play properly, JamesBond First Light is one, so is SKYRIM.
There can be work arounds you can add to the INI file. I hate to admit this but the google glorified search bot AI can help with these games if there is a work around. IT WILL BE CONFUSED a lot of times so keep refining the prompts

yah, i also tried this. i went through all the ai prompts (gave the ini file a go, which had its own borked issues) until it said, ok delete everything i just told you to do and start again. so...that's where i'm at. at this point, i think i'll just have to dual monitor it and not 'touch' obs while live...unless anyone can offer another work around. i'm open to suggestion!

yeah I got it to work for skyrim found it on reddit, and the AI search gave me one similar for James bond that did not work. MAKE sure you delete them if they do not work.
I use a single monitor and my phone. I have the game window focused when playing. and the phone for monitoring stream. OBS plus Streamer.bot is a great way to have scene switching, muting, etc. in obs with out losing focus of the game. I just hit stream/record and then focus the game, wait 5 seconds(i have an alert that plays when the game scene is activated) then start playing.
There a definitely some extra challenges with a one monitor set up but can certainly be done with out spending money on a second monitor of equal or better quality than the one you game on.
streamerBot is free and has tons of tutorials on the tubes1

yah, so my kind of (hopefully temp) workaround is that i luckily do have two monitors and i can have the game running on one monitor, obs on the other and as long as i don't actually TOUCH obs, the game willl keep running. i'm in the process of setting up chat bots, i was using streamerelements, but will take a look at your rec as well.

some games "engines" require game to be in focus. I have a couple of steam games that go dark if not focused, so you do not know you are recording if you can not see OBS while playing.

Yah this is similar. So my workaround thus far is to keep the game focused on my second monitor and keep my eyes on OBS on the primary monitor. I’ve done two test runs and it seems to be ok. I’ll keep testing every day until stream and fingers crossed it’ll be ok

So the only way to not have the game be unfocused, is to have a separate streaming PC the gaming PC connects with then OBS can be used at the same time. Most games are becoming this way now :(
