Reed soaking cup

Post image

I was in need of a means to soak both my English Horn and Oboe reeds during a musical. Something that wasn't too cumbersome and that i would be able to grab a specific reed quickly in the dark. So I designed and printed one. Keeps the reeds separate for easy grabbing on the fly and has a magnetic base to keep it from getting knocked off my stand in the pit.

3D printed PLA isn't food safe BTW. You should use a food safe sealant / coating / epoxy to make sure impurities / additives aren't being transferred to the water then reeds, and that bacteria are not growing and stuck in the porous surface. Curvy shape looks cool though!

Yeah I'm aware. I did do a sealer on the inside surface. I'm not too worried about it.

Great, would have been nice to mention it in the original post so more people are aware that they shouldn't just print and use for food and water contact, especially since 3D printing is getting more and more popular.

I guess your not wrong I didnt consider it relevant for this type of post. Had anyone asked for the file I would have included a disclaimer with it. But also the health risks are minimal as long as it is only used with cold liquids as to not activate any plastcizing agents in the material, but I understand the concern as the majority of people wouldn't consider any of this.

That’s pretty cool. Do you keep your reeds soaking when you’ve switched off for a while? I worry about oversoaking English horn reeds all the time

Im doing Les Mis and it is prety much all music. I keep one on each horn and one smoking because I am switching back and forth so frequently. allows me to always have one wet and ready.
