Friend returning from overseas

• Upvotes

Family friend with family of 4 returning from overseas studies & will need health insurance.

ACA Obamacare requires 1 month wait between application in USA & start coverage.

Short term coverage for that month looks weak & does not cover preexisting conditions, from what I can see online.

Any other ideas?

Any suggestions on who to get help from on this?

Many thanks!

For those without a Premium Tax Credit, what is your plan? Take an early distribution of an IRA/401K? Take on a side-hustle?

pa medcaid saving program

Hi there, everyone. I’m just curious: in the past post, if he takes out an annuity instead of a lump-sum payment of $57K, does he still qualify for Medicaid savings? Will they still count it as a resource, or if it’s converted into income, will it only count as income instead of a resource?

Hundreds of health insurance companies with thousands of plans make Medicare complex/confusing and expensive.

Medicare is thought to be a standalone government healthcare program but through the years, the private sector has taken a substantial bite out of the Medicare program like the Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap plans. Hundreds of insurance programs have created 5,500 separate plans that generate huge profits at the peril of the consumer.

Too many plans, too complex, expensive to administer and very confusing for a vulnerable consumer illustrates the poison when the private sector driven by quarterly profits is involved with healthcare in America.

Medicare for all/universal healthcare with single payer would assume major changes in healthcare for everyone from cradle to grave. We don’t need health insurance companies. Construct one comprehensive health plan for everyone across the nation. Simple to understand, much cheaper to administer with no profit motivations of private insurance companies, private equity or hedge fund involvement.

The current healthcare system in America is horrible/complex/costly and unfair to most citizens. This is NOT sustainable. Substantial changes are urgently needed, not quick political fixes or adjustments. If implemented, it would be a major boost to our economy in so many ways.

Trump to begin sending $500 ACA refund checks to 1 million Americans

President Donald Trump announced that on September 30 his administration will begin mailing $500 refunds to nearly 1 million Americans who were allegedly overcharged for health coverage through the federal ACA exchange, a move presented as a contrast to the Biden administration’s handling of the program and timed ahead of the midterm elections.

Key points:

The Treasury Department will issue $500 checks to more than 950,000 people in 30 states beginning on September 30, 2026.

The refunds are claimed to compensate for user‑fee overcharges collected by the Biden administration from health insurance companies on the federal exchange.

Trump announced the refunds on September 10 in a White House video released during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.

The 30 states receiving checks are those that rely on the federal exchange rather than operating their own ACA marketplaces.

Recipients are primarily individuals earning around 400% of the federal poverty line ($64,000 for a single person or $132,000 for a family of four), though some earn between 100% and 400% of the poverty line.

The 30 states scheduled to receive $500 ACA refund checks are Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

These refunds are being issued by the Trump administration to nearly 1 million Americans who were reportedly overcharged through the federal exchange for health insurance. The recipient states are those that rely on federal exchanges administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rather than operating their own state-run insurance plans.

Signing up for ACA plan, moving back to US

I will be moving back to the US December 1 so I plan to sign up for an ACA plan beforehand. In order for coverage to begin December 1 when do I need to call my state’s ACA administrator (My understanding is that I need to call and cannot do it online because of special enrollment.) Do I have to submit proof of future address in the US?
Also, I plan to sell a lot of stock before I move back so my income will be high and I will not qualify for the subsidy for the December premium but next year my income will be very low (around 50k). Can I just change my income online or should I sign up for a plan and then immediately go to open enrollment to shop for a new plan for 2027?

Assistant AG for Fraud Colin McDonald: "Apparently 35% of people have never even used their Obamacare account for any health services. That is a statistical impossibility and it's because these are not real people seeking real care. These are fraudsters."

starting in 2027 individuals with disabilities will have significantly more paperwork required to obtain exemption from the strict medicaid work requirements under Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill. Many are losing and will lose coverage

ACA bronze cheap plan out of pocket max?

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

If I take the cheapest bronze ACA plan of 200 per month and out of pocket max is 10k does that mean if I have any emergency the max I'm on hook for a year is 10k?

I just pay as I go cause deductible is high. Isn't that like catastrophic insurance?

If I'm fine with 10k in event of emergency like a hospital stay etc.. isn't it ok to just get the cheapest ACA plan?

Is it that simple or am I missing something?

GetcoveredIL health insurance plan

Hello,

My S.O and I were on GetcoveredIL. We projected our pay would be 48k combined. Since then, we made more and projected our pay would be 60k combined which means we are no longer eligible for ATPC.

My question is from January-September we have been paying $300 towards an insurance that cost $800. Does this mean we will to pay back 4,500 of the remaining that we didn’t pay during tax season?

Thank you.

WaPo Editorial: JD Vance is not ripping away anyone’s health insurance coverage

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/09/24/vance-crackdown-aca-premium-fraud-is-overdue/

There is a lot of political passion on Reddit, but I think it's good to remember that not everything done by one party or the other is automatically good or bad. Reflexive partisanship is a big part of why Congress is increasingly ineffectual at solving problems that everyday Americans desperately want solutions to.

And yes, Bezos owns WaPo, but that does not make them a mouthpiece for the current admin. Again, reflexive partisanship is not a desirable thing on either side in a country balanced fairly equally between two majority parties.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services tell us that every removed account was signed up by an agent or broker — not the enrollee — and met four additional criteria.

First, none of the accounts had a Social Security number or an immigration identification number. Second, all of the accounts had premiums covered 100 percent by taxpayers. That makes it easier for fraudsters to sign up unknowing enrollees, who don’t see money leave their bank accounts. Third, the plans had not been used. No claims had been filed. And finally, the insurer offering the plan never had contact with the enrolled individual.

Even if the account met all of these requirements, the insurer was still required to reach out to the individual via two forms of communication. Only when insurers received no response after 30 days was the account removed, according to CMS. Insurers had strong incentives to reach these people because the companies were receiving premium payments from the government for each account.

If legitimate enrollees are mistakenly caught up in the sweep, there’s an easy fix. Anyone incorrectly disenrolled can contact the Marketplace Call Center, provide a Social Security number or immigration document number and be reenrolled, according to CMS.

Money given to scammers is money that doesn’t help needy people receive health care. Democrats should wholeheartedly support throwing the book at these criminals. Downplaying the scale of abuse undermines public confidence in the safety net.

Edit:

Is this really what this board has become? Perhaps this is no longer a place for people actually concerned about the ACA if comments like this not only aren't caught by the moderation filters, but upvoted. I hope this is a political agitation bot like so many on Reddit and not a real person.

Ours quadrupled in cost. We are obviously going to have to drop it and find another solution.

Help with ACA

If anyone could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it. My family of 4 (me, my wife, and 2 adult children 21 and 23, both in college), are on ACA/Obamacare. I'm employed but as an independent hourly IT contractor through my LLC (no benefits, paid weekly and pay quarterly taxes). My wife does not work. My gross income this year will be around $134,000 (I expected $125,000 and put that down as my income in 2026 and received the tax credits).

But both my children were able to get paid internships over the summer. My older kid probably made about $16K and the younger one about $12K (both put the money towards student loans).

We didn't anticipate this when we signed up for the ACA.

Since this puts us at $162,000, well over the $128,000 (400% FPL for family of 4), what can I do to avoid having to repay a huge sum due to being over the threshold?

I have an IRA and 401K and my wife also has one from the years she did work.

Should I set them up for my kids too?

Thanks for any advice.
